Garrett's staff shaping up nicely

So much for the Tuna's raid of Valley Ranch giving Wade Phillips an opportunity to hire "his guys."

If Jerry guy Dave Campo and Dom Capers round out the Cowboys' coaching staff, Phillips will have exactly zero experience working with any of the defensive position coaches. But the Cowboys will be set up awfully well for the eventual transition into the Jason Garrett era.

Garrett reportedly wanted Capers to be his defensive coordinator if he became the head coach in Baltimore. Jerry is on the record saying WR coach Ray Sherman is a "future coordinator" who "knows this system inside and out." So, if Capers comes on board, Garrett's coordinators will already be in the building. And it's not too tough to envision Campo becoming the assistant head coach.

The only assistant the Cowboys hired this off-season that Phillips has worked with before is OL coach Hudson Houck. Their paths crossed briefly in San Diego, but Matt Mosley reported that Phillips wanted to hire ex-Kansas City offensive coordinator Mike Solari but was vetoed by Jerry.

Houck has a lot more experience with Garrett than Phillips, having worked with the red-headed genius during Garrett's playing days in Dallas and his QB coach days with the Dolphins.

The addition of experienced, intelligent coaches could be a great thing for Phillips. But, if the Cowboys don't enjoy enough success to suit the guy making the hires, the transition to the next head coach is setting up to be seamless.

I hope Wade's renting and didn't buy a house in Dallas. Surely, even a country bumpkin like him can see the writing on the wall.

Jerry has done a good job with the staff. Let's hope he can do the same with the draft.

man the writing sure is on the wall for wade...poor guy. it's okay, it'll be soon time to let the Ivy man take over. maybe we can advance out of the first round this time.

Can anyone argue with the hires, whether Jerry's or not? Name the better available prospects, then argue Jerry is building behind Wade for Garrett.

Jeez, if you are going to insinuate all this, at least have some factual information to back up the point, i.e. we passed on Xguy to take Jerry's guy. But, please be sure Xguy is the clearly better choice.

Still trying to see how all of this is a bad thing. Wade gets a legitimate shot at a super bowl in 08. The Cowboys staff is set for the future guaranteeing continuity for years to come.

Sounds like a win win to me, but I know conspiracy theorys sell more papers...

Nick,

Technically we did advance out of the first round. We just didn't have to play a game in the first round. We lost in the Divisional round, which is the 2nd round.

What we didn't do was win a game in the playoffs.

Get a life Tim. Nothing the Cowboys do you don't read meanings into. Stop fanning flame of disaffection. Let's build a good coaching crew. All the new hires appear okay.If you don't have anything to write, don't. Reserve your ink for next season

Folks,

This is about as obvious as it gets.

TimmyMac has it nailed. But I do think it is a win-win situation for Jerry and the Cowboys.

You get a super strong coaching staff behind Wade this year, and fort 2009, you have your coordinators for Garrett.

The only fly I can see in the ointment, Can Brian Stewart control this bunch, including a guy he used to work for in Capers. But then, Garrett had to "supervise" a lot of guys who had a lot more experience than he did and he seemed to have no problem.

Hopefully Capers will replace Stewart when Garrett takes over.

When was the last time a lame-duck coach took a team to the Super Bowl? The Cowboys could be the most talented "rebuilding" team in the league in 2008.

Posted by Alan @ 4:04 PM Tue, Jan 29, 2008

Try this year. Coughlin was a lame duck coach when the year started and now look.

Posted by AikBachEdith @ 9:09 PM Tue, Jan 29, 2008

Sorry pal. Coughlin's successor wasn't waiting in the wings with a ready-picked staff.

Wade knew what he was getting into. It's his best chance to get a ring, if that indeed is in the cards. But, go another year without a playoff win and it's curtains, Mr. Fixit Guy!

As your fellow writer writes: Jerry is out of control.....well, Dallas will never win or be anything until Jerry dies....that is the only way. Jerry is a stupid inbred idiot who thinks he knows football - he clearly understands business, but needs to bow out of the football side of things. Of course we all know, his stupid ego won't allow it so the Cowboys are doomed.
You can count on it!!!

Posted by Fleet @ 9:43 AM Wed, Jan 30, 2008

Upset, you are clearly a stupid inbred idiot. It is hypocritical to call someone stupid then claim they understand something. Clearly Jerry is a smart man. Not understanding how to put together a football team does not make you stupid or inbred. While the Boys have been less than stellar for the past 12 years, Jerry did enable this team to win 3 Super Bowls in the 90s. Imagine where this team would be if it were still owned by Bum Bright.

My jump to conclusion is that coach Wade Phillips let's assistant coaches and players motivate themselves while he keeps the family together. It worked wonderfully with T.O. and no telling how much of an influence this ability had on the team's success. I mean, couldn't this be the lightning in the team's bottle of success?

2008 is in trouble. Unless Wade Phillips can handle and smooth the tension that will surely arise if Capers comes on board the defense will suffer next year. Stewart can't be happy about working with the guy who's clearly been hired to take his spot. And Capers has already expressed he's not interested in taking the position if it's going to cause waves, which we've learned Stewart has said will cause problems. That situation never works out. Then again, if you're willing to sacrifice a season to get the perfect coaching staff, which is not beyond Jerry's logic and possibly what Jerry is preaching to Capers behind the scenes, then it will happen. Be prepared for a disspointing 2008.

Looks like the Cowboys are going to take a big step back next year. If this is Jerry trying to take over the show, we've seen how thats turned out before. I love my Cowboys, but Jerrys like a old mother-in-law, sticking his nose were it dont belong. JERRY,.. STICK TO BEING AN OWNER! He should let Garret hit the road and move on. Did you see the same play calling I saw in the last playoff game?
