Gibbs done in D.C.

8:30 AM Tue, Jan 08, 2008 |
Albert Breer   E-mail   News tips

According to Howard Schneider and Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post, Redskins coach Joe Gibbs has decided to end his second stint in D.C. in retirement.

Gibbs did a great job holding together his team in the face of tragedy this year, as the Redskins dealt with the death of 24-year-old safety Sean Taylor. Washington's season ended on Saturday, in a loss in Seattle in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

Cowboys assistants Tony Sparano and Jason Garrett -- who seem to be candidates for every head coaching job that opens -- would not be open to interview for the vacancy until after the season ends. The first window for that closed over the weekend, meaning either of them need to wait until the Cowboys seasons ends. There is a second window during the bye week before the Super Bowl, but that's only for second interviews, meaning, for example, Sparano could go back and talk to the Ravens, Dolphins or Falcons, but not the Redskins.

Secondary coach Todd Bowles could be a name in the mix as well, having played for the Redskins from 1986-90 and 1992-93.

CORRECTION (10:35 a.m.): Cleared up a rule with the league there. The second window, as is now reflected in the post, is for second interviews only.

Hit the road Joe and don't come back no mo no mo!

Good riddance Joe. Don't let the door hit you.

I respect the man for the way he held that team together this year. Enjoy retirement, Joe. The thought of Garrett or Sparano in burgundy and gold makes me want to hurl. Go Cowboys!

I swear to God they better not take Garrett. I just couldn't deal with that. Joe is hands down the most respectful/respected coach I have seen in the league. Im not a player or a coach or anything but the way the skins players rallied behind him showed the respect he commands.

Also, during that drubbing they were taking by the Pats, no one would have blamed them if they took a cheap shot at Brady especially down 52-7, but my bet is it was the respect for the game and your oppenent that Joe instilled in them that warded off a personal foul.

I am glad he wont be around to get those skins in the playoffs with nothing again, I just hope they dont ransack our coaching dept because of it.

This has Bill Cowher written all over it.

Gregg Williams has a $1 million pay-out clause in his contract if he isn't hired as the next HC. Being as he seems to have run the team this year, I expect he's the next head coach... or he's gone elsewhere to be HC (with an extra million in the bank).

Sparano is already hired by Miami.

I don't think Garrett would go to Washington. Washington would lose both their O coordinator and D coordinator if that happened, plus 'The Danny' would have to fork over a few mil to Greg Williams if he isn't the next coach.

I think either Saunders or Williams, most likely Williams (since that would leave 'The Danny' room to play with the offense by playing Fantasy Football once again).

Personally, I don't think Garrett is leaving. Not sure why, but I think he knows he's the next HC of Dallas and he wants that.

JC,

I don't see 'The Chin' coaching in Washington, especially this year. With Gibbs remaining as a 'special advisor' he would be too leary of interference, along with working for 'The Danny' is not a dream job. He has already stated he is not ready to coach in 08. He's waiting for Fox to retire/get fired in Carolina.

Cowher has already said he ain't coming back yet, and Gregg Williams has a clause in his contract that pays him a million bucks if he doesn't succeed Gibbs as head coach.

Breer, Washington can't interview them until after the Super Bowl if the 'Boys make it that far due to league rules. Get your facts straight.

Have to agree with Bill in DC, if Williams is not promoted then he will leave. This remind me of Tomlin / Wisenhunt situation in Pitts last year.

You`ll still see Gibbs every weekend starting real soon when he gets back to his race team and gets Tony Stewart back on top where he belongs.Look for something on him at Daytona. He may be many things to a lot of people, but he is without a doubt a great man of character. It may be hard to believe, but he is more popular as a team owner in Nascar than a football coach right now.

Here's hoping Danny hires outside, and both Williams and Saunders leave.

Win/Win. ;-)

Personally I'm too busy worrying about the Rams next year to be worrying much about this. ;)

Posted by Joe @ 9:49 AM Tue, Jan 08, 2008

The Skins will interview Garrett next week after the Cowboys are beaten soundly by the Giants.

Posted by Bill In DC @ 9:54 AM Tue, Jan 08, 2008

Joe,

ROFL, I hope you're enjoying whatever alternate reality you currently occupy.

Posted by Joe "Double-Ice" Gibbs @ 10:40 AM Tue, Jan 08, 2008

The reason we lost to Seattle was because we were to busy worring about playing the RAMS next year.
RAMS FAN, you won't have Joe to kick around any more.

Posted by Vaquero @ 10:42 AM Tue, Jan 08, 2008

You tell him Bill in D.C! The reality is that we are in for a dogfight this Sunday, but we will prevail.
If Owens can come back, even only as a decoy this week, then for sure we will spank them.
Cowboys 27 Gnats 24
Go Cowboys! Man I'm fired up for this game!

Posted by Bernard @ 10:54 AM Tue, Jan 08, 2008

Ever since that geezer came back the Skins seemed to have had our number. Glad to see him leave !!

Posted by RAMS FAN @ 11:06 AM Tue, Jan 08, 2008

WORD IS HE IS TAKING THE GM JOB IN ST LOUIS. HOW THAT COW-SUCKA'S"?

RODNEY IN ATLANTA, YES I AM REAL. HAVE YOU EVER HEARD THE CLASSIC, "YES VIRGINIA",[THERE IS A SANTA CLAUSE]. GO BACK AND READ IT, AND SUBSTITUTE "VIRGINIA" WITH "RODNEY", AND "EDITOR" WITH "RAMSFAN" YOU'LL SOON GET THE IDEA. OH YES RODNEY I LIVE. i LIVE A HUNDRED YEARS, NAY, A THOUSAND YEARS, YES RODNEY, THERE IS A RAMS FAN",,,,LMAO

Posted by Bill In DC @ 11:23 AM Tue, Jan 08, 2008

He? Ramsfan, who is he that is taking the GM job in St Louis? Whose word? Yours? If you mean Gibbs, then you've demonstrated you ARE an alternate. Nobody could be THAT stupid.

Gibbs is going back to managing his NASCAR Racing team. The guy is 65 and has diabetes, he can't put in the hours and take the strain being a HC or GM demands anymore.

Posted by J @ 12:09 PM Tue, Jan 08, 2008

The Redskins promised this job to Gregg Williams when they brought him into the fold. Albert, please stop attempting to rile up the Cowboy faithful about the pending departures of coaches. We know Sparano will go to Miami and hopefully, Red, will stick around. He still needs to learn to adjust the adjustments others are making on him.

Honestly, I wonder if Bowles would be a better D-Coordinator than Brian Stewart and hate to lose him but he'll be a D-Coordinator somewhere next year.

I hate Washington with a passion, but I always have had nothing but respect for Joe Gibbs and the way he's run that team!
