Give Jerry some help

4:00 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008 |
Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

Jerry Jones doesn't have Jeff Ireland and Brian Gaine around to help any more, and he's been awfully busy watching his commercials and trying to talk Jason Garrett into sticking around Valley Ranch. I'm concerned that he hasn't had much time to think about which Cowboys free agents are keepers.

Do you folks have any advice for him? Read Todd Archer's story previewing the off-season scene and fire away. Follow the jump to read my advice to Jerry.

We'll start with the guys the Cowboys gotta keep. In order of priority:

1. RB Marion "The Barbarian" Barber -- He's a restricted free agent, so the Cowboys can and almost certainly will match any offer he gets. They could slap the highest tender on him, but you really don't want to risk losing Barber after this season. Something in the five-year, $25-30 million range sounds about right.

2. FS Ken Hamlin -- He proved his worth by playing for the relative bargain of $2 million and change this season. Expect the Cowboys to give him the multi-year deal he wanted last year.

3. LT Flozell Adams -- Say what you want about the false-start penalties, but do you want an unproven player protecting Tony Romo's blind side? Didn't think so. Let's give Flo a three-year deal at fair-market value, which is in the neighborhood of $6 million per year for left tackles.

4. DE Chris Canty -- He's restricted, too, and the Cowboys would probably have to put a first-round tender on him to be safe. A deal like the one Jay Ratliff signed (five years, $20.5 million) would make sense.

5. L.P. Ladouceur -- You might not have heard of him, and that's a good thing for the long snapper. Keep him at the veteran's minimum.

SS/special teamer Keith Davis, CB Jacques Reeves and CB Nate Jones are guys who would be welcomed back at reasonable (read: cheap) rates. But it should be a priority to bump Reeves and Jones down a spot on the depth chart, either by drafting a corner in the first round or by tapping into a rich free-agent cornerback market (Marcus Trufant, Asante Samuel, Nnamdi Asomugha).

Wave bye-bye to RB Julius Jones, as if there was any doubt after he was benched for the playoffs. Getting a big-play back to partner with Barber will be a priority (second-round pick?).

I would put a higher priority on keeping Flozell and Canty than Hamlin. Hamlin was a fair addition but I really don't think he was a Pro Bowl caliber player. I'd love to see Dallas make a big free agent signing at CB.

Posted by letsgoto @ 4:11 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

Throw reeves $hit out the door and slam it on him, that non-assigment knowing, blowing the playoffs punk!

Posted by chris graham @ 4:12 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

mario manningham or deshun jackson, felix jones or johnatan stewart, the cornerback from kansas or the cornerback from troy.

Posted by Jason @ 4:13 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

Are you kidding?! Yeah, let's get rid of the only stable element in our secondary... Of course you re-sign Hamlin. The fact you didn't hear his name much was largely due to the fact he did his job well.

Posted by Jason Raye @ 4:19 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

I am positive the Cowboys will keep Julious.......just watch...he will be a probowler next year!!!!

Posted by Chris McClure @ 4:23 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

How about shipping Kosier, James, Ayodele, Williams, Spears, and Carpenter to Miami, so Parcells and Ireland can be reunited with the stiffs they either brought here or signed to big money extensions.

Posted by Jim @ 4:26 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

I wonder about all this money Tim is throwing around. I don't think we can do all of this and still be under the cap. Plus, remember that D Ware and T Newman will need contracts in the next couple of years and they won't be cheap.
If you sign Hamlin, I think you have to get Roy out of there (again not cap friendly), move Hamlin to SS and find an inexpensive FS again. Maybe Pat Watkins is ready to step up.
I love Barber but RB's are easier to find and that seems expensive for a two back system. He'd have to be the feature back with not much behind him. Plus, whats the rush with him and Canty, I want them both to stay, but lets not get rushed.

Posted by RP @ 4:26 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

Hamlin, Canty, Adams, and Barber are must-resigns. Hamlin was a great addition to our secondary and you'd be crazy to say he wasn't.

As for Manningham and Jackson, they are too short. We need a WR in the 6'4 to 6'6 range.

Think Sweed, Bowman, Hardy, Malcolm Kelly, Marcus Monk, etc.

I think a decent WR can be had in the later rounds this year.

Jerry Jones is a big Arkansas guy so he may take a chance on the 6'6" Monk from Arkansas on the 2nd day.

The reality is that the available quality FAs is going to be very limited with many top FAs signed or will be franchased. Look at the top teams and now they build with the draft and not FAs.

Also even with these off season changes and challenges facing the Cowboys, they are less then last year. In the NFL today such coaching and player changes impact all teams, but look where San Diego is now even after its last offseason.

ESPN is reporting that Romo re-injured his thumb in the Giants game:

Posted by Ryan @ 4:36 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

If it were me I'd:
1) Let Flozell go. I'm not saying he's not valuable, but we have people waiting in the wings. We didn't know how good Ratliff was until he had to start. I think we have enough choices to Tackle to fill in. Plus we'd have fewer false starts.
2)Lockup Barber longterm. He's probably not ever going to be an elite back, but he sure gives energy to the team and the fans.
3)Sign Hamlin. Not Pro Bowl money, but something under.
4)Draft a WR/CB in 1st. If they can get a quality CB with the first pick (#22) it would be a blessing. Plenty of good promising WRs in the bottom part of the draft too.
5)Draft RB 2nd or 3rd. Lots of good backs in the draft but no need to use a first on one. Look at Ryan Grant...and Barber at that.
6)Bring in quality OC. If Garrett leaves, try to bring in Cam Cameron since he has a history with Wade. But this is only after doing everything to keep Garrett here.
7)Bye JJ. Under no circumstances do you bring Julius Jones back. He could turn into a decent back, but not here.
8)Shop Carpenter to Bill. Parcells drafted him, see what he might want for him. If Bill offers a 2nd rounder, I take it.

Posted by Ryan @ 4:40 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

Heres all you need to know about Hamlin. He didnt lead at his position from the fan voting, but AFTER the players and coaches made their pro-bowl votes, Hamlin was in. That says alot about how good he is.

Posted by Timbo @ 4:43 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

Sure Flozell may protect well, but how many drives were killed because of his falste starts? That would be a worthy off-season research project. Keep the rest if possible but if not, in this order; Barber, Hamlin, Laodeceur, Canty. Draft a CB with first pick, SS/FS with second pick, linemen with the rest.

Posted by gary t @ 4:44 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

They can put a 1st round tender on Barber. If someone wants him that bad and we can get another #1 pick then let him go. jerry needs to be careful about pouring a bunch of money into guys that haven't done anything yet. Barber is a good back. But he wore down against the Giants and was a non-factor and a liability in the passing game in the second half. There are plenty of good RBs available and if I could get a 1st round pick in return I would take it.

Here's what you do Jerry:

1. instead of a headset and Cowboy gear give Wade the red-checkered pants; suspenders; and giant plastic hamburger on gamedays.

2. no new $ for Flozell; lets see what the 3 young tackles can do.

3. Reeves gets the door; keeping him around is bad luck no matter what the coin and you just know he will get significant playing time next year somehow if kept on the roster; move on.

4. follow pattern of keeping your own [T. New; Ware; LP; MB III; Canty; Hamlin].

5. shop Carpenter to Miami; maybe they will give something decent for one of Bill's guys.

6. bring Biscuit in for a chat re his new # and committment and come to an agreement he loses 15-20 lbs. or he moves to fullback.

7. add CBs; speed WR; RB; and OL whenever possible.

8. give the Red Ball Express whatever it takes to stay at this point.

9. Houck back to coach OL.

10. Columbo and Kosier may need to go also [maybe Faneca big FA addition rather than CB or WR].

Posted by davej @ 4:54 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

- Barber will get the highest tender from the Cowboys. If someone signs him to a huge offer sheet and the Cowboys get good a 1st (like between picks 10 - 20) and 3rd for him - it might be worth it to let him go.

- If we can resign Canty to a deal like Ratliff's he's well worth it.

- Flo is gone. You can't sign everybody.

- I think Terry Glenn will retire.

- I believe the team can cut Roy Willy and have his cap hit prorated over the 2008 and 2009 seasons. At this point, I'm so scared of him back there, it might be a case of addition by subtraction. If we don't cut him, I suggest Wade sit down with him and say that if he doesn't improve his coverage, he will be a Pro Bowler sitting on the bench next year.

- I think we have to get 2 CBs and a cover safety through the draft or free agency.

- I don't put much stock in huge free agent splashes this year. Maybe sign some good backup players at average prices.

- With the two 1sts, a 2nd, and a 3rd, I would draft a potential #1 WR, RB, and 2 DBs. I would love Mario Manningham (WR) or Aqib Talib(CB) at pick #20. I think the second 1st round pick gets traded down and we pick up a RB, WR/CB, and a safety. I draft a QB in round 4/5 to make up for the Matt Moore fiasco. The rest of the picks I would choose the best player available at DB, DL,and maybe Offensive Guard. I want to have 3 or 4 new draft picks/free agents in the secondary for training camp.

- I think we need a change on our coaching staff. assuming Jason Garrett stays, if Hudson Houck is still available, let's get him for the o-line. Hudson was here under Jimmy and worked with Jason in Miami. I have not been happy with the way our DBs have performed, so a new secondary coach might be good since Todd Bowles is probably going to Miami. Is Dat Nguyen ready to be the LB coach?

Posted by Edward @ 4:56 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

Trade Bobby Carpenter to Miami for Ted Ginn. Both were first round draft choices who need a fresh start. Carpenter will not start in Dallas. Ginn's drafting was a public relations disaster and he could use a fresh start. Ginn is a similar player to Terry Glenn (quick and fast).

Posted by Daniel @ 4:58 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

Great comment, Chris McClure! You nailed it! Poor drafting is inexcusable!

Posted by BamBam @ 5:00 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

The Cowboys need to acquire talent at 3 positions: CB, WR, & RB. I'd like to see a list of free agents and/or trade possibilities Jerry might consider at these positions.

Posted by Teddy @ 5:00 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

Well, you want to sign almost everyone? I would be very careful. Most players are over rated on a successful regular season. Yes, you need to put at least a first round offer on Barber. Make him a starter with full load next season. Before you give him a ton of money, let us see if he can take full load. In the playoff game, he disappeared in the second half. Cowboys need to see if he can be a full time running back or just a part time running back. He had never played full time before, even not in college. You want to give him 25-30 million dollars? I think you would suggest to give that much to Julius Jones two years ago. Actually, a lot of fans thought Jones would be another hall of fame RB.

Do you really want to throw 25 to 30 million at a player who has never been playing full time? Quality running baks are not hard to find. Ryan Grant of Green Bay came from no where. If Barber could prove to take a full load efficiently for the whole season, then he can be signed to a long term contract. But even in that case, you must be careful. Very few RBs can be productive for long. Seattle RB Shawn, 49ers Frank Gore, and many others failed to deliver after they signed big contracts.

Hamlin played OK. But he was not playing at the probowler level. It all depends how much money he wants. If he wants to be one of the highest paid safeties, be very careful. Dallas already has one of the highest paid safeties on the roster. After Roy Williams signed a monster contract, he was very disappointing. Hamlin is an above average free safety, nothing more. If he wants to be paid as a probowler, good luck. He should not be a probowler in the first place.

As for Adams, it is more complicated. You do not want to let good left tackles go. But he is almost 34, Dallas has to move on sooner or later. If not now, then a couple of years later. If they think they have someone to replace him, I think he will be gone. Adams will definitely want to test the free agency market. Dallas has a fall-back plan to play Davis at Left Tackle if the young players are not up to task. I think Adams will be gone.

I think they need to sign Canty who should be a core piece of the 3-4 defense linemen. Since he is not a probowler and he is a restricted free agent, and 3-4 defense linemen do not make as much as a 4-3 defense linemen, he can be signed as a reasonable price.

The failure of 1990s was to sign all the stars to long term contracts that they did not deserve. When your team has 12 probowlers and still could not win a playoff game, that means most of your playerrs are over rated. Be very careful to sign them to long term contracts. Steelers and Pats are always on the top because they would never over paid their players.

Rams fan, does your elevator go to the top? First of all you need to learn some english because there is no such word as "worser." Secondly the Rams are in the NFC you knucklehead not the AFC. And just to give you an update, let's just say that the Rams won't be competing with the Cowboys anytime soon.

Posted by RevDlux @ 5:25 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

I would love to see Joe Avazano back as special teams coach. Our coverage units got us into trouble several times this season and in my opinion were critical in the Giants loss. Ver Poor performance all around except for kicker and punter.

Posted by Randy Galloway's empty flask @ 5:50 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

the goal is to ruin the Cowboys right Jerry? Then hire and then keep a stumble bum coach [check]; let every good coach and talent evaluator leave [check]; get Uncle Fester, errrr, Larry Lacewell back handling the draft and Free Agency; then make sure potential and athletic skill trumps character and production when bringing in the new players from the draft/Free Agency.

Posted by Lance @ 5:53 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

Jerry needs to make a decision NOW vis a vis Jason and Wade. If Jason comes back then there will be some sort of understanding between him and Jerry that he will be the future Cowboys coach sooner rather than later. Wade will be looking over his shoulder every time the defense is beaten. Heck Wade might even be fired during halftime of the first game. There will be a lot of suspicion in the locker room between the offensive and defensive coaches if both Jason and Wade are here next year. Time to begin the "Happy Days" era at Valley Ranch! Next question: who will be the DC?

Posted by jtd86 @ 6:01 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

1. Find another young, creative, aggressive coordinator. No Retreads. How about seeing if we can get Chris Petersen of Boise?
2. Get Hudson Houck out of retirement to be Assistant head coach and line coach. Strong personality who has had outstanding results with his lines.
3. RB: Make Barber highest tender. Never give money away when you don't have to. If he leaves, draft 3 RB's. If he stays, draft 2 RB's and let Jones and Thompson go. Draft RB in first round.
4. CB: Draft CB in first round. The CB or RB taken first will depend on who's available. If Stewart is still there, take him. If not, Talib first then Jones. All indications are that Samuel will test free agency and DC must at least make an offer. I rather spend the money here than Flozell Adams. If we get a CB in free agency, still draft CB first.
5. LT: Adams will only wear down more. He will get a huge offer that will not be worth it. In the Giants game, he needed help from Barber in the 4th quarter. Doug Free has the feet, it is up to our trainers to get him the strength to start.
6. Safety: No more strong safeties. This league is too pass happy. Keep Hamlin and trade Williams for anything. We have Watkins, Courtney Brown (a steel in the 7th last year) and Henry.
7. Trade Ferguson and Carpenter to Miami for a draft pick. That 2nd that's like a first would be great but I would settle for the 3rd rounder. Maybe add a 6th and Spears to get that 2nd. Parcells needs bodies for the 3-4. Use on a RB or WR or CB. Hatcher takes Spears spot. Draft a small, athletic DT in 7th for DE depth.
8. NT: Draft the biggest, fattest guy you can find in the 5th. (Raji or Shirley)
9. Draft an ILB to replace Carpenter (maybe some knuckhead gave us a pick for Williams)
10. Draft WR in second. Someone will drop to this pick.
11. Draft the biggest pure, left guard in the 4th. There are plenty of good prospects for the 4th round and we do not need another guy who plays every position.
12. Sign Canty and long snapper.

Setup an all players vacation at a private resort somewhere in TX during the bye week next year.

I think we need to let Flozell go,
Put first round tender on Barber (I like him ALOT! he is awesome, but a first round pick would allow for breathing room)

Sign Trufant to play alongside newman.
Draft a first round CB
Move Henry to Saftey, so we have 2 shutdown corners with trufant, newman and the draft pick

Draft a first round WR (not sweed.. i've seen him play and he doesn't impress me)
Draft Felix jones in the second round

If Barber is bought out- trade his tender and one of our first round picks for McFadden.. and throw carpenter in that trade aswell.

I don't know how cap space is re appropriated in a trade like it is in the NHL, but we need to DUMP WILLIAMS AND MOVE HENRY to saftey

draft a RB (Felix Jones?), WR, CB

Keep Barber, Canty, Hamlin, and LP. If you can get Flozell on a 2-3 yr deal with reasonable money then do it. I'd call the Lions to see if their Roy Williams is available so we can see if he's serious about coming back this direction. I'd also look into signing Asante Samuel because I have a feeling the Patriots are going to struggle to sign both him and Moss. They can't franchise him this year either. I'm sure the Seahawks will make Trufant their franchise player, but if somehow that falls apart we'd do well to do whatever it takes to sign him. Draft a CB and speed WR in the first round assuming you don't trade for Detroit's Williams and/or sign Samuel.

Posted by colorado kool aid @ 8:32 PM Wed, Jan 16, 2008

Re-sign: Barber, Hamlin, Canty, Ladouceur and Davis. Let Adams and J Jones go. Re-sign one of the backup corners (I prefer Reeves).

Take a CB and a WR in the first round -- your back up running back can be drafted later or picked up via trade/FA signing.

Get ready to move Henry to safety and start the rookie 1st round CB.

1) Retain Barber, Canty, Adams, Hamlin. Sign FA CB. Trufant/Samuel/Asomugha

2) Trade 1st and 3rd and next years 1st to trade up for D Mac. (seems like a lot but that's probably what it would take)

3) Draft a reciever in 1st round. Desean Jackson/Sweed/Kelly

4) Draft RB in 2nd. Jamal Charles/Felix Jones/ someone with gamebreaking speed

Posted by Medhanie Estifanos @ 7:23 AM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

I think the two top priorities are Chris Canty and Marion "The Barbarian" Barber. Now, I think Canty is a must, sign him to a long-term contract but Barber, I would like to keep him at maybe 2 to 3 million per year but not 5 million a year. If his agent demands that, then I would most definitely listen to trade offers. I know the "Tuna" would love to have him. I say exchange Marion Barber, Marcus Spears, and Bobby Carpenter to Miami, for their 1st round pick. Plenty of good backs, even in later rounds, to pay 5 million a year. Barber is a very good punishing back, but not great and he can't carry the load. If I was Jerry, I would make a trade involving Barber, and see if I could get a top ten pick without having to give up any of my draft picks. Jerry could then trade the latter (30th) pick and probably get an extra 2nd Rnd pick and another 1st Rnd next year, those extra picks would add quality depth (CB, FS or SS, WR, OL,RB), also have the Cowboys under the salary cap and with money to spend, if need be, and keep the Cowboys very young and most importantly, the potential to be very talented for years to come.

There is realy no need to sgn a potential break away back to go with Barber.Another hard nosed runner just like Barber would do nicely. I would rather have a ten, twelve ot fourteen play drive with several four yard runs than one forty or fifty yard run. That way you not only move the football but eat up the clock as well. Then, if your defense can keep the opponent from scoring the next time they get the ball, you will discourage the opponent.

1) i would tender barber. if any of the top 12 team wants to sign him, i will not bother matching it. you get more value this way. however, any other team that tries to sign him, i will match it unless the terms is ridiculous; ie: poison pill clause
2) i would try to sign either samuel or oakland guy; oakland guy will be given top priority.
2a) if i feel spencer is ready, i would strongly consider trading ellis for either chad johnson or javon walker.
3) i would sign canty and LP. i will give flozell adams 3 year deal with 5 million salary and 7.5 million dollar signing bonus. he can either take it or leave it. if i can't sign either of the 2 cbs, then i will sign hamlin. if i can sign either, then i will convert henry into a hybrid fs/3rd cb.
4) as for the draft: if i can't sign adams, then i would target a LT in draft; this a deep draft for LT. i would consider ryan clady, jeffrey otah, michael oher, and sam baker. i listed them in order of preference. i would have listed sam baker higher if not for the fact that he plays for USC. cowboys already got burn with the last USC OL.
in order of preference for the 22nd pick(1st is listed first): aquib talib/mike jenkins(i highly doubt either will fall down this far), kenny phillips(fs), malcolm kelly, limas sweed, ryan clady, jeffrey otah, oher, and sam baker.
for the 2nd 1st round pick, i would add the following players to the above list: manningham, doucet, medenhall(if for nothing else for sheer value pick), and leodis mckelvin(troy cb/punt returner)
if i pick a wr with 22nd pick, then i will pick another position with the 2nd 1st round.
ideally i would like to pick kelly/ sweed with 22nd pick and otah/oher/sam baker with 29th pick.
2nd round pick: kevin smith; tough to bring down. i would really like to pick him in the third round but our pick is almost at the end of the round and by that time, he is gone.
