Harsh words for Wade

12:39 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008 |

From Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback:

I think those were some bizarre and dumb comments by Wade Phillips the other day, in the wake of the playoff loss to the Giants. "I feel like the best team lost the game. I thought we outplayed them, but we lost.'' A belittling statement. And one the Giants, if they have any pride, will remember next fall.

Unlike a certain previous instance, I think King understood what Phillips meant despite their cultural differences.

Wayne violated the sacred "Veritas" of the scoreboard...just keep your mouth shut no matter how much it hurts and move on...Granny Gibbs would never have said that...

Posted by darren @ 1:19 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Wade maybe your team outplayed the Giants when it came to offensive total yardage, but you stunk on special team coverage. FIRE the special teams coach!

Posted by Tim Burns @ 1:32 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Peter King is another bloated East Coast writer that has a huge opinion of himself. And whether it's on one of his TV gigs or in his SI.com column, he's quick to crow when he gets something right, (for a change). But he's never forced to revisit anything when he's dead wrong. Look at the preseason SI issue...This is the one where he had the b8lls to try and RANK the best NFL players, #1 through #500. He's just another talking head that likes to hear his head rattle...Wade was right. The better team did lose. That's not belittling the Giants. That's a fact. You can argue whether the "best" team won yesterday...I don't have a dog in that hunt...But if the Giants & Cowboys played 10 times with their divisional round line-ups, Dallas wins eight of them.
Look, it may not happen in the Super Bowl, but at some point the slightly retarded Manning brother is going to remember who he is....He'll go back to his 70 QB rating and his INT's exceeding his TD's. He is what he is. He hasn't turned some magical corner and become a better quarterback. That's a fairy tale. It doesn't happen. And when he does go back to being Eli the Idiot, this is a .500 team. The Cowboys, warts and all, are better than a .500 team. Therefore, the better team lost, Wade is right, and Peter King needs to keep his opinion to himself.

Posted by tex @ 1:33 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

As much as it pains me to do so, I must agree with Peter "Mr. East coast, Starbucks geek" this time. Wade deserves the be the butt of ridicule for his comments, his leadership of this team during December, and his overall lackadaisical attitude.

He further will get the Cows more ridicule this fall when we play the Giants again.

Posted by LarryL @ 1:42 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

That press conference made me question Wade's intelligence a bit as well. It was painful to listen to. I felt genuinely bad for him.

Posted by Maynard g @ 1:45 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Who cares what the Yankee King says?
He's got his hands full convincing the intelligent parts of the country that this Super Bowl isn't going to be the least-watched, most-boring Super Bowl in history! ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Posted by Angie @ 1:48 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Peter King is an idiot.

Posted by Tim Burns @ 1:54 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

B.S.
You can't have it both ways if you're one that's been calling for Wade's head....The whole point of everybody running up the hill with torches to kill the Wade-monster was that YOU DID THINK we had the better team. Wade and the coaching staff, Romo in Cabo, the play-calling on gameday...All of those were the crutches you leaned on for the better team losing this game! If you really believed the Giants were the better team, you'd chalk it up to experience and say, "See ya next year"! "We'll get 'em in 2008"! And you'd go smiling and skipping into hockey season or whatever you do after the NFL season ends... But that's not what everybody was screaming!!@! You said this team was mismanaged or we would still be playing. You said that if Wade & Jerry would've just locked Romo up the week before the game, he would have performed better. You said that if we'd have worked out in pads and played harder in December, it would've translated into wins in December! So YOU thought we had the better team too, it's just not cool to say it now that we're not going to Arizona. Well I'm sorry, my tolerence for hypocrisy evidently does have a limit.
I've kept my mouth shut since the loss. Partly because when I do post I get a ration of sh*t from the moronic, pseudo-fans and the rest is my effing business. But I'm heading this off...Peter King wants to sell magazines and gets hit on his website. He doesn't care about being accurate any more. At one point he was a decent journalist, but now he's just another hack, one step above Breer and one below Wilbon. Just because he says Wade was wrong doesn't make it so...If Wade really believes that the BETTER TEAM LOST, as I do, then I'm glad he said it. If that gives NYG bulletin board material next season, that's fine with me...

Posted by Lucy @ 2:14 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Tim Burns,

ITA with you about the media being bandwagoners and singling certain players/teams out for ridiculous criticism, while giving others a free pass because "they've earned it". If was bad idea for one player/team to do/say it, it should still be a bad idea for another player/team.

As far as what Wade Phillips said, I feel you can only prove you're the better team if you play that way on the field. We did prove it against the Giants twice, and the game was pretty even the 3rd time, I don't think the Giants were outstanding on anything, but they were consistent and they won when it mattered.

The comment will come back up next season, of course, but only because the media will make sure it does. They know they control how things are perceived. I just wish fans would get a collective clue and put their foot down and expect better journalism.

Does the theory still hold true about the loser of the Super Bowl not being that good the following season?

Posted by Holy Cow! @ 2:26 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Wade Phillips is a prime example as to why more money needs to be put into education!

Posted by L.J., Fla. @ 2:28 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Wade Philips was a heart broken coach, when he spoke those words. It was frankly sad to see a press conference given by a broken man. That's what that press gig was. It seems King and a lot of other people are piling on Wade, via words, words, words. He will continue mentally hurt until x amount of time passes.

Though Wade has to be held accountable for the loss, other Cowboy coaches allowed the team to become complacent, which wrecked the team on the way to the Super Bowl.

One would think that the press could find better things to do, then to make fun Wade Philips.

Posted by BReed @ 2:29 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

The BETTER team lost, but it does bring in to question the way we finished the season. Of the four finalists this weekend, only San Diego took week sixteen off to get well and STILL had their #1 back hurt for the finals. MOMENTUM is the key at this time of year. As for all these questions about Wade, how firm was Coughlin's job at the first of the season? Where are the second guessers now? Firmly on the bandwagon I bet. True blue fans.I agree with Tim,some of you make me sick.

Posted by PaulC @ 2:34 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

The Cowboys lost because Jerry, a loser himself, hired another flat out loser in Wade Phillips. The Cowboys have better players than the Giants, but the Cowboys are an inferior "team". That's thanks to Jerry, Wade, and Jason.

Posted by scott @ 2:46 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

What really hurts is watching the Giants go the the superbowl when we have way more talent. Wade Philips is not a great coach and should be fired for wasting a great season.

I am a cowboy fan, but I do not agree with the post about Eli and his being stupid. I think he is a very smart guy and is a good quarterback. He is going to the superbowl with his team because they played three smart games on the road. No matter who the better team is, it is the winner that goes forward. I really find Eli refreshing as he is very easy going and not full of himself, unlike some other football "stars" who have to have the spotlight.

Posted by gpaq @ 2:48 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

King is right. as a 'boys fan, i was embarassed by wade's statement. it's bad enough we lost but can we lose some dignity? i wonder if crayton wrote that for wade.

I am sorry for ranting. I am just miserable since this loss. I wish I could hug all of you bloggers (and kiss a few too). Oh well, back to the drill press.

Peter King, you have been a badddddd boy!

Posted by tex @ 2:54 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Scott,

Yes we have more talent. However, the Giants had more will, more drive, and played as a team. I could count three to four Giants who were stumbling/hobbling from injuries including Plaxico who was unstoppable. Put that with a caretaker quarterback who somehow didn't make a mistake in this postseason, and you have a SB appearance.

In my thirty plus years of watching all things Cow, I never saw a Cowboys team that was obviously short of talent get as far as the talent-poor Giants yesterday. All 5 Cowboy champions were simply talent loaded and were no surprise to win. It pains be to no end to say good things about the hated Giants, but the way they pulled together at the end of the season and showed heart/drive/desire, that leaves me very jealous right now. Green with envy that our lackadaisical Boys couldn't come together like that.

Posted by Press Agent @ 2:55 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

In the end - Eli will have the better career than Romo, Romeo, Romorella, Choko Romo or whatever else you call him.

Eli may seem goofy, but he is not immature like a certain celebrity QB who thinks he is Brett Farve.

Posted by Not So Crazy Ray @ 3:06 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

I agree with Wade that the better team lost. But I'm not sure if he realizes that, by saying that, he's pointing the finger of blame back at himself and his coaching staff.

Tell us, Wade, Garrett, Sparano, et al.....how did you lose a home playoff game against a team you had already beaten handily twice, when you had a team stocked full of Pro Bowlers at your disposal? I can answer that. The Giants coaching staff did more with less, and our coaching staff did less with more. Wade, that buck stops with you.

And, everybody ease up on Tim Burns. He may go off on a lot of long-winded rants, but he makes sense overall.

Posted by Tim Burns @ 3:09 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Eli's not full of himself because he's busy watching that monkey in his head clang those symbals together.

Did you see his gape-mouthed expression after he won the freaking NFC title game? That wasn't humility! That was lack of working brain cells.

I really enjoy King's column each Monday. He is usually objective in what he writes. As a Cowboys fan I have to agree with him a little bit. I can see Wade's side of it as well. On paper we are a better team, but you have to play the game. I always thought the whole "you have to be playing well at the end of the season" was crap, but I'm a believer now. Just look at the Giants, they are on a roll. They just beat Dallas and Green Bay on the road! I still think if the Cowboys played the Giants 10 times they'd beat them 8 out of 10, but when it counted NY won, can't argue it.

Dallas needs to figure out this December slide that has been going on for 4 years now. It's pathetic. I can't believe the Giants are in the Superbowl, the team we drubbed in the opener and then again in November. For what its worth, I'll be rooting for them to upset the Pats.

Posted by Nomes @ 3:32 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

I am thinking of all the times that the Cowboys didn't play well but sneaked out a win in the end. Wades comments always pointed at the final score. What he said after losing this game is against everything we try to teach our kids about good sportsmanship. If you lose, do it with class and congradulate the winners. I have been a Cowboy fan for 50 years and still am, but the best team won. Look at the score!

Posted by Don @ 3:42 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Tim, I agree with you. Eli will go back to his fraud ways, probably starting in the SuperBowl.

BTW - What kind of dealership do you work at? I sold cars for a few years. Ford, GM.

2008 Prediction
Cowboys 11-5 (win a playof game finally)
Eagles 10-6
Skins 9-7
Giants 7-9 (Super Bowl hangover)

Posted by Redskins_Rule @ 3:43 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

I think Tom Brooksheir had it right...say something bad about the Cowboys in Texas and expect hemlock in your nachos...now we'll see how good GM Jones is with supplementing a team that has most of the necessary pieces in place...Hail to the Redskins!!!...and I don't fake post as other posters FYI...

Posted by Lassie The Cat @ 3:47 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

The first point about Wade's comment is that it showed no class. Second, what does being more talented mean? Is it simply being bigger and faster? Should we give talent points for stamina? Both the offensive and defensive lines of the Giants were dominating at the end of the game. The Cows lines looked gassed. What about focus and concentration? Is that mental talent? Then little Manning certainly seemed more talented than Romo. Fair is fair.

I'm with Tim in that I'm just absolutely freaking disgusted and ultimately depressed since the 'Boys embarrassed themselves and lost to yes...the lesser team. I don't care what Peter King, Jimmy, or anyone else says, the Cowboys were (key word there "were") the best team in the NFC this season. The Cowboys would've done the same thing to the Packers they did a few weeks back had they actually taken care of business and had the opportunity to do so yesterday. I have NO question they would've trounced the hapless Packers. I can't stand to hear Jimmy say they're the most complete team in the NFC and have been all season, that's crap, complete crap. And it showed yesterday. What it showed even more is the Cowboys ultimately beat themselves with poor, very poor special teams play, because they beat the crap outta the Giants in every other facet of the game.

Now, here's a bit of reality for all to ponder...tell me, is Romo at this point better than Eli, better than Rivers, we know he's not better than Brady and Peyton. As Aikman was rated, you must rate QBs on their wins and losses, and given Romo's second straight one and done playoff loss, we must place him behind Rivers and Eli at this point. Am I looking forward to a Romo who now has a full season under his belt as the full time starter? You better believe I am, he's the ultimate competitor and I fully anticipate that next season he will not only erase the one and done playoff streak, but he will solidify his spot as the Cowboys QB for the next decade when he leads the 'Boys to the Super Bowl.

Posted by Jeremy @ 4:19 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

The problem with these Cowboys are not the talent. Its that lack of "playmakers". Yes, I know, that old Jimmy Johnson axiom. Well, its true. When Dallas needed to make plays to win the game against NY Giants, nobody stepped up. The Giants, on the other hand, had a few guys who stepped up in key situations. I can think of one Cowboy, Patrick Crayton, who had severl opportunities to step up and make plays, and he choked. What is really disturbing, is that Dallas had just signed him to a 4 year extension. So, Dallas, we got 4 more years of living with Crayton's choking. That sucks.

Posted by Dumbledore @ 4:26 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Ah, little Wade. He, once a pupil of mine, was so brash and full of glory. His age, quite frankly, has caused him to mellow and to see what he chooses to see. Fear, my friends, fear of the truth. He can't face it so he is in denial. The last time he was so afraid, he can not face it now. So, he lives in a, as they say, a fantasy world? At night he dances to the music and loves to play, but by day, he choose to say what we all want, though its his day. True love, it is, shall be again. He has taken his magic as far as it will go, and its his sole that has been broken. Only the true master of death can rekindle the joy that Wade had as a boy.

These boys, all to told, shall choose the way for Wade, I see so. Sit back, enjoy love, and have a chocolate frog, and let the events, for the time being, unfold.

Posted by patsfaninpittsburgh @ 4:49 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Face it, Cowpoke retards. The Cowboys were the luckiest team in NFL history this year. How else can anyone explain Buffalo and Detroit and the first Redskins game. Most of all, look how lucky they were to only lose by 3 touchdowns to the Pats. The 'pokes are a 10-6 or 9-7 team that lucked out to 13-3.

An organization that worries more about having "star QB's" dating trailer trash than winning games will always be second rate.

Odd that Peter didn't get all bent out of shape when the Giants swore up and down after thir first loss to Dallas that THEY were the better team.

Dallas is certainly the more talented team, I don't think anyone can deny that and I think that is what Phillips was saying. The Giants played better as a team in that last game. Dallas played better as a team in the first 2, so the score this season was 2-1 Dallas.

this is just stupid piling on by the sports writers, 90% of whom simply go with the herd and haven't had an original thought in years.

I can't believe all the Cowboys fans who blindly support there team even when somebody on the team does something wrong or stupid. Look! Wade shouldn't have said what he said, plain and simple. The better team did win. They out coached us and outplayed us. They have played smashmouth football since the last game of the season and it payed off. There going to the dance and we are not. When all you can say about your team when it plays poorly the last 4 games of the season is were 13-3, get a clue. The guy didn't want to come out and say were playing terrible football. I know much of you think that the Giants winning is a fluke, well you don't know a football from a peach. I didn't think they were gonna beat the Pack either. They did, and they deserve to go to the Bowl. They have heart and character, I only hope next year our team can represent a little of it also

Posted by John @ 7:18 PM Mon, Jan 21, 2008

Other than being at the doctor's office and having an hour to kill and forgetting to bring something to read, does anyone look at SI anymore except for the photos? Peter King is irrelevant.

That being said, Phillips probably shouldn't have said anything except I'm sorry we disappointed our terrific fans. Get ready for next year because there is no way I'm going to let this team forget how this loss felt.

I hope the Giants beat the Patriots since the Patriots are coached by a very strange guy, have a few dirty players and they are overrated in a diluted league. Just think if Brady were to have thrown 3 interceptions against the Cowboys or 49ers of the 90s in a championship game, there is no way they would have come out on top. So we can stop this nonsense about best team etc. Looking forward to next year and let's hope Mr. Jones fills out the few holes we have.

Old Georgia coaching legend Vince Dooley's comment after his Bulldogs beat Texas in the Cotton Bowl one year, ending the Longhorns unbeaten year and ultimately costing Texas a national championship. Immediately after the game Texas coach Fred Akers stated that he thought Texas was the better team. When Vince Dooley was told this by a reporter he replied "I always thought the scoreboard was the indicator". And he was correct. On that day his team was better and 8 days ago the Giants were better. Hurts that is the reality but it falls on a poorly played game by our Cowboys.

Wade embarrassed the entire city of Dallas in that press conference. As Jim Rome said, Wade needs to man up, own it, and give the Giants the credit they deserve and stop disrespecting them with statements like the ones that he made in that press conference.

Wade showed no class with those statements....and just made us look like crybaby sore losers.

Barry Switzer said the same thing almost word for word after the Cowboys lost to the 49'ers in the 94 NFC championship game and nobody said sh*t about it. I think there's some history between Wade and the coffee drinking fat boy. Oh, and what happened the following year? Superbowl champs.

We should give Wade Phillips some slack, he under pressure because of what happen in San Diego last year and in Dallas this year. If SD can fire their head coach after a season they had last year, I guess it could happen in Dallas. But all Wade is doing is instilling confidence toward his players. One thing I don't like about this football stuff is people saying you need to watch what you say, or the other team would have bulletin board material. This is the NFL, they are all men not boys. The guys should not need any external motivating factors, because they have made it to the NFL. That's your motivating factor and of course the PAY CHECK.

East coast bias writers have to brag when they get something right. Any idiot could have seen it, though, when the Cowboys played like Cowgirls after the Packers win.

What Wade said illustrates the whole problem with the team. Yes, they were better, but Wade let them think they were the best team in the NFC and that they could just cruise into the Super Bowl. As much as I hate the cheater in NE, at least he keeps pushing his team to get better and better regardless of their record. After the Green Bay win, the Cowboys turned it down a notch because their coach let them.

Were the Cowboys better than the Giants? Maybe. But there is no way that the Cowboys dominated the Giants this season. Both of the games were tightly contested until late in the fourth quarter. The notion that the Cowboys could beat the Giants 80% of the time is absurd. That is what is making the loss so hard for the Cowboys' players, coaches and fans. They simply have overrated themselves.

Mistakes Lose football games----especially Playoff games. Cowboys made more of them...THEREFORE, they were NOT the better team. How difficult is that to comprehend? You can control the ball for 75% of the game, but as soon as you make some bad passes and EASILY caught dropped balls, you make it much easier for your team to lose. So thank you Dallas, for 'being the better team' out there. Those 2 regular season victories got you really far.

Bash Eli (as one poster called him, "the Retarded Manning Brother) all you want, but he played better than Romo, and quite frankly, Romo is a stiff who crumbles under the pressure. Puts on that 'veteran' facade, when really he's a no name QB from a no name college who hasn't proved a whole lot in the NFL. Surround any QB with talent and he'll win atleast a few games.
