Is Garrett ready to be a head coach?

Several scribes have speculated that Jason Garrett didn't take the job in Baltimore because he doesn't know whether he's ready to be a head coach.

I believe him that the present and future opportunities here (and Jerry's present and future money) were the primary factors in his decision. But is he ready to be a head coach?

Well, Garrett said that you're never really ready to do something until you've done it, but he is confident he could handle a head coaching job.

"I think there were similar questions about my ability to be an offensive coordinator, to be a playcaller and all of those things," Garrett said. "And all of those things I can get a heck of a lot better at – I know that – and I’m making my list to do that. What you need to do is rely on those things that got you to that point so that now you feel really confident so you can go to that next step and be the head coach of the organization and the way that I would do that is to rely on the things that got me there."

How can he not be ready to be a HC when our current HC is on his 3rd gig?...besides when JG takes over he is going to be "Taking Over"...he will have input on everything FB just like Big Bill...and I think that is exactly what Jerry wants...a FB guy he trusts to assist with all aspects of the organization but w/out the Tuna's grumpiness...

Garrett will be a great head coach(hopefully with the Cowboys)someday. At age 41, Garrett has his entire coaching career with plenty of opportunities ahead of him. I think he relishes the idea of working with Romo and company next year.

Jason Garett is an intelligent, motivated and ethical young man..he can accomplish anything he sets his mind to...the Baltimore and Atlanta jobs are the bottom rungs in the NFL..entry level positions at best..when the right situation comes along for Jason he will take it..and he will be very succesful...Jason Garrett is not hanging around waiting for the ax to fall on Mr. Phillps, he is to honest a person to do that...but if Mr. Phillips doesnt find a way to instill some character into this team soon..Mr. Garrett may be the head coach in Dallas this time next year.....

If jerry will keep his butt off the feild, I think Wade and Jason will make a great team. Jerry is a jerk GM and needs to stop making his coaches and players losr their concentration so he can soak up some national TV time.

BOTTOM LINE:

WADE IS GONE AFTER 2008, REGARDLESS.

JASON IS COWBOY HEAD COACH IN 2009, REGARDLESS.

Speculation can rage and run for the next year but this is a done deal in Jerry's mind.

He aint gonna see Jason leave at the end of 2008 just to keep a worn out old NFL retread around.

Jason is ready to be a HC but he is going to enjoy being a OC another year. I just hope with Wade around, 2008 isnt some sort of sacrificial year.

You know, I think I have finally figured out these Jerry bashers a little bit.

If you are a casual fan who really has almost no insight into what really goes on with the cowboys but you want to act like you do, what better target to vent on than Jerry.

I am not saying Jerry is always correct, but some of he rediculous criticism he gets, like the guy above who thinks Jerry being on the sideline at he end of the game causes players and coaches to lose their concentration. Give me a break.

Yeah, I think thats it. jerry is just an easy target for uninformed fans who want to act like they actually have any insight into whats going on.

Jason showed a lot this year by moving and motioning Eldorado Owens around to put him in the best position to play...just one of the smart things he did.

I think he is a classy guy. Jerry Jones recognized his abilties early and showed his committment to building a winning organization by keeping him here.

Players make the plays but coaches are the ones that put them in the best situations to take advantage of their abilities.

The Cowboys have a bright future ahead and I already can't wait til next season.

Jerry Basher(not)...man you hit the nail on the head dude. There are a lot of bashers and trouble makers here who claim to be Cowboy fans but just want to lip off to stir up hate and discontent. I come here to converse with true Cowboy fans but seem to spend half my time defending Jerry Jones, the players and even myself.

Nobody is perfect but some of the people who come here think that they are.

Man I hope this thing works out in 2008.

If you kinda think of Wade as the DC and Jason as the OC, it makes a lot of sense.

Wade finishes installing a pressure 3-4 defense which Jason is not equiped to do at this time.

Jason gives his full concentration to finishing overhauling the offense to his schemes without the bigger responsibilities of being head coach.

Then in 2009 Jason takes over the whole thing.

If it can work out that way - great!!

I'm trying my best to get my optimism back guys.

Thank you Coach Garrett for staying with Dallas! We truly appreciate you and your skills.

Posted by Paulov @ 5:16 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

Not that I am a Jerry Basher, but can someone please explain his apparent love affair with Roy Williams?

Posted by John @ 5:17 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

Coach Garrett showed good judgment here. Why put yourself in a tough situation in struggling organizations when everyone knows you're next in line to be the head coach of most valuable organization in the profession you've chosen? Whether in 2009 or 2010, the point is, Coach Garrett is taking the long view here and I would think that is what Mr. Jones is also doing. Let's hope the grand plan works out for everyone. Good for Jones also to understand the value of a perception (and reality) of stability for the team.

Winning with this team next year starts with departing with Roy Williams. He is not dedicated to winning. If everyone looks at his abilities, they will see that if he cannot knock someone down on drag them down with the jersey he is not going to dive or wrap someone up if that means he may have to go to the ground to do it. Last week, when he was approaching a tackle, he was trying his best to grap the runner but in no way was going to tackle. His teammate forced him to do so by going through him to tackle the runner. Roy is afraid of injury and it shows by wearing long sleeves that will prevent any rug burns in case in accidently hits the ground.

Well said Jerry Basher (not),

After my disappointment finally faded…I was able to read about Garrett hanging around, which brought a smile to my face.

I think another off-season, with acquisitions, the draft, and such, will fill the final gaps.

My forseen loses: Flozel, JJ, Nate Jones, mayeb Ellis this time around since he cries so much, and I hope, really hope, Roy Williams is cut.

He just doesn't get it done back there. And I've watched a lot of games since I started in 74', my year of birth. :)

Any serious sports fan should know that Garrett will be the head coach of Dallas in 2009, if he wants it. Jerry is not going to let him leave, if possible. Mr. Jones could always reassign Wade, while compensating him with big dollars.

Serious, people, should understand that Jerry Jones is a exceptionally good owner. His contribution to the NFL and the North Texas economy have been enormous.

But some people are going to complain about Jerry, regardless of his actions. It is just the nature of the beast.

Posted by Mark Chmura's Hot Tub @ 5:36 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

Paulov...Roy Willie has pictures of the real Jerry Jones who is locked in a steel drum in Arkansas...Eddie Debartolo and Carmen Policy made the switch back in 1993...they then had the robot Jerry fire Jimmy; make himself GM; let Ken Norton go to them; handle the drafts; etc...it all fits...

Posted by Bill in DC @ 5:48 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

Brian (and the other Williams dislikers)

Roy Williams will not be traded or cut by Dallas this year. If h was to be cut or traded Dallas would take a 6.6 Million dollar hit on the salary cap in 08, so, it ain't happening.

Posted by Paulov @ 6:08 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

Dear Hot Tub, brillant this explains why Jerry would extend Roy's contract.

Posted by drew @ 9:20 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

i like jerry jones alot and think he is exactly the kind of owner that has allowed the cowboys to be winners. at the same time, if you have found a staff that you can trust and believe in, then you need to step aside and let them do their job.

Posted by Chris from Mass. @ 11:31 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

Bill in DC -- If that's completely accurate and his cap hit can't be spread out over more years, then yes, we probably need to keep him.

But there's nothing that says he has to play much. Sit his ass down and let him watch others play the position properly.

Posted by Brian @ 10:35 AM Fri, Jan 18, 2008

Bill in DC,

I'm well aware of his cap situation...however...I believe it was 11 million over 5 years...so that would be a 5 mil hit. Also, I don't "hate" Roy...I even have his Jersey. But unless he has a confidence transplant or we can hook him up to a machine with Charles Woodson like the old sci-fi films, he's a liability.
