Is Manningham the man?

2:48 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008 |

Add SI.com's Don Banks to the list of mock drafters who have the Cowboys taking Michigan WR Mario Manningham with their first pick. (Banks has Dallas drafting Arkansas RB/KR Felix Jones at No. 28.)

For your viewing pleasure, I put up a Manningham highlight reel from his sophomore season. Follow the jump for a YouTube of all his touches in Michigan's win over Florida in the Capital One Bowl, his final college game.

For what it's worth, I heard Jason Garrett mention on Michael Irvin's radio show yesterday that LSU WR Early Doucet was a guy who impressed him during Senior Bowl practices. Doucet is also projected to go in the 20s.

Doucet > Manningham

I like the fact that Don Banks has the Cowboys drafting Felix Jones with the second nomber one. For the value, I think Jones is a much better deal that McFadden.

Posted by Ol-Bee, Los Angeles @ 3:21 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

I know he is good but can he stretch the field?

Posted by ***The*Best*Cowboy*Fan*Ever*** @ 3:33 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

I think his last name is too long. Will it fit on the back of his Cowboy jersey? We should take a WR with a shorter last name...

Posted by robbie @ 3:36 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

I would rather get a cornerback with the first 1, I think that good corners are harder to get than WR, just my opinion. I think with the first 3 picks 2 corners and a WR. I think they could get their RB in later rounds. If Felix Jones is available though, i may think about it. my 2 cents worth

Posted by 666 @ 3:45 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

Jerry,

Hurry up and trade one of those #1 picks for Roy Williams(WR) so you are not tempted to trade up for McFadden. Best Cowboy Fan Ever, We can put
RW on his jersey.

Then take the best rookie CB available with the other.

then, by damn, bundle a #2, #3, and even a player if necessary and get a another late round #1 pick and get Felix Jones.

Doucet (6'1' 211) is bigger and nearly as fast as Manningham (6' 178). He was rated the top WR prospect in the country in numerous publications coming out of high school. Was named to an All-Academic team which could speak for his character and intelligence. Plus he's a senior, which should mean a little more mature on and off the field.

Trenton, N.J.- Dear Timmy Mac...even though I consistently had Tony Romo as a top 5 MVP candidate in my highly read MMQB web article which posts each Monday during the year in SI, and even though I consistently had the Cowboys rated within the top 6 teams in the NFL all year long no matter what the results, I admit I have an East Coast bias and am a ham-handed hack as a sports journalist.

What do I know really? I'm only in the top 1% of people in my profession; give NFL insight on the NFL's premier game of the week [Sunday Night Football]; give insight on the top cable show about the NFL on HBO; and have access to Hall of Fame Players; Team Presidents; Team Owners; Team Scouts; Top Personnel people; etc. However I am basically clueless. Just ask one of your former bloggers who says he will never visit your site again. Now I know its a stretch that a used car salesman from Texas would know more than me and have more access to the NFL than me, but its true. Just ask him.

So with that being said, the Cowboys should not make any personnel/coaching/scouting change until consulting with him first. So in essence I believe you are way out of line talking about future Cowboy players without the input and insight of used car guy. So please take this blog post down re Manningham until you receive further input from you know who.

respectfully submitted,

P.K.
SI

I think Felix Jones would be the perfect compliment to The Barbarian but was hoping he would last till the 2nd round and we could trade up and get him. One of those 1st rounders has to be a CB, in the future it will allow us to move Henry over to safety and cut Roy when his cap hit will be less damaging.

CAPTCHA sucks!!!

Peter " Burns " King - you a relentless one!

Posted by DCFanatic @ 4:03 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

I like him over Doucet. But I don't like him at #22, maybe #28 if we keep both picks.

Here's his Analysis from NFLDraftScout.com

Positives: Excellent burst off the line. ... Can accelerate past the corner down the sideline. ... Uses nice body control and leaping ability to get up to catch the ball at its highest point, even in traffic. ... Adjusts to back-shoulder ball. ... Sells the head fake. ... Uses his hands to create separation. ... Returned from mid-2006 surgery to repair torn meniscus/MCL in less than a month. ... Good bloodlines. One of his cousins is former Wolverine and NFL starting offensive lineman Bubba Paris.

Negatives: Only average size and build. ... Really needs to work on his run blocking, whiffs when cutting and doesn't sustain well. ... Does lose concentration when trying to run before the catch or hearing footsteps. ... Needs to show he can run all of the routes and be tough over the middle at his size. ... Even coach Lloyd Carr called him out on his inconsistent play earlier in 2007.

Based on Production....Super Mario is much better than Doucet.

Frisco, T.X. - Dear Peter...you're in the top 1% of your profession? You're a sports writer, right? Is that even a profession? The qualifications for sports writers don't really raise the task to the level of a "profession". Based on local evidence from our own "Super Star" writers, all you need is a web page and an opinion.

I mean, it's not neuroscience, is it?

In fact, I'm not a sports writer (but I did stay at a Holiday Inn this week) but I'll go ahead and make a prediction:

The Cowboys will make a series of moves between now and the start of the 2008 season. And they'll draft some players, too. This scoop is freely given but I'm charging for the next one.

Posted by L.J., Fla. @ 4:06 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

The Cowboys must come up with a shut down cornerback before the 2008 season starts. A little luck in snaring a running back is also badly needed.

Posted by JR @ 4:09 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

Yeah this makes tons of sense. Let's take a WR and RB in the first round. Our offense sucked. Anybody watch our pass defense, especially against spread teams!?

I think that taking Manningham or Doucett would be good, however I think that if Felix Jones is at 22 you take him first because there are several good WR left out there. For example James Hardy, Malcolm Kelly, I think that the better value for the pick is Felix Jones and 22. If worse came to worse and you did not like any of the WR left at 28 we should trade that pick along with a player to Detroit for Roy Williams or trade with Arizona for Larry Fitzgerald. I don't think that Jerry is going to be willing to take a CB that hight he has already said that he is looking for offensive playmakers. However, if that is the case we go offensive with both picks, Jerry will go out and make a splash my signing Trufant or Samuel in free agency. What does everyone else think?

Posted by nf @ 4:23 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

Who was the receiver the cowboys took from lsu a few yrs ago that never worked out?

Why not pay Moss and use the two 20s for a rb and cb. Wait till next yr for the wr and get the hometown talent.

Posted by Friedrichsen @ 4:24 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

I would puke if we drafted Doucet. A small slow receiver with no hands.. We have that in Patricia Crayton.. If we dont get a blazer give me a mismatch atleast with hight - Like James Hardy or Limas Sweed.

Manningham is an okay choice, but get a Corner with the second pick

Posted by marcus @ 4:26 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

Manningham DROPS BALLS!!!!!! All of his catches were jump balls in the endzone!! Go back and watch him in this year's Bowl game against Florida!! He dropped ball after ball and you feel we should draft him???? We already have a speed guy dropping balls (Miles "wack boy" Austin)!!

Posted by Bradley @ 4:29 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

James Hardy is definitely a sleeper pick. I watched him for four years at Indiana and he is an absolute beast.

Posted by Carl L @ 4:47 PM Thu, Jan 24, 2008

I almost forgot about Doucet. Don't compare Doucet to Skylar Green either! Doucet has great hands and his agility, acceleration and top-end speed are far superior when compared to Green's.

A lot of people thought Doucet was the best WR on LSU last year and Dwayne Bowe from KC was on that team. Enough said...

Leodis McKelvin at 22
Early Doucet at 28

The FAKE "Peter King SI" post was intended to roast a frequent know-it-all poster named "Tim Burns. Did you NOT read the following:
"I know its a stretch that a used car salesman from Texas would know more than me and have more access to the NFL than me, but its true. Just ask him."

Why would you think Sport Illustrated's Peter King would actually post here? Looks like the jokes on you.

Peter King is still a hack. In his 1-500 ranking of the top NFL players before the 2007 season, he ranks WR Greg Jennings #309, Julius Peppers ranked the 4th best player in the league and had 12 receivers before he got to T.O. at #103...The whole list was a disaster after Week 3...Oh yeah, and he had Romo ranked #137, wedged somewhere between Bills WR Lee Evans and Shockey.

Now I know that the only reason a sports writer makes a list is to cause discussion and debate, but even the top 25 on his list made me want take my Sports Illustrated and keep it behind the seat of my truck in case I got caught out somewhere and needed something to wipe with...

His 2007 preseason Top 10 consisted of the usual suspects, (Colts, Pats, Chargers), but included SIX teams that didn't even make the postseason. Was he throwing darts?

j. Sports writing like these blog posts and king's lists are not reporting at all, but part of the job of a newspaper is to have entertaining and interactive websites and reads. This increases the number of readers, therefore increasing advertising revenue, therefore allowing the paper to hire top-notch reporters who write brilliant features, solid game recaps and thought-provoking columns. Sports writing/reporting is a profession, you must have at least a bachelor's degree to do it, and in order to work at the Dallas Morning News, you must have substantial real-world experience. If you do not like blog posts that attempt to give readers a glance at what the Cowboys may do with the off-season, then do not read them or post on them. It is pretty simple, please do not attempt to bring down an entire profession, something of which you have no clue about.

I like Roy Williams, but do not use one of those #1 Round picks to get him . . . if he can't be had with a later round pick, let him go . . . he'll be a free agent soon enough.

Posted by Mark @ 12:14 AM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

First option would be to contact the Lions about Roy Williams.

Hell yeah, if the Cowboys selected Manningham with one of their first rd. picks. He brings speed & big play potential.
The guy had an off year at Michigan. Allot of Upside here.

I agree, we shouldn't use 1st round draft picks for free agents like Detroit's Roy Williams.

Posted by KD_Kingpin @ 6:15 AM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

why does everyone think we need to trade one of the firsts to get Roy Williams. There is nothing in his history, or in the value of veteran wideouts, to warrant trading a first for him. Detroit has actually floated that they wouldnt take anything less then a 2nd rounder for him. He is going into the last year of his contract, and has stated he wants to come (back) to Texas to play. He can, and will, make it clear this is his #1 destination and will cost alot of money to resign if traded to another team. Jerry Jones, SMARTLY, realizes that free agency is the way to go for wideouts.

We will trade a 2nd a 4th for Roy Williams, and will still have our 2 firsts and Carpenter/Spears bait. Talib-McKelvin-Mike Jenkins... Jones-Mendenhall-Slaton-Stewart + young receiver is a bonus. There is no way in hell I draft a receiver with one of our two picks.

Posted by necro @ 6:47 AM Fri, Jan 25, 2008

We have to get a CB somewhere foremost. I think we can forget Asanti Samuel, he will command and probably deserves the highest paid CB salary in the NFL, and we still have to sign TNew long term. Not enough money to have them both for any team. No matter what we get at CB we won't gain anything if we don't also sign Ken Hamlin. Everyone needs to read the prospect reports on Malcolm Kelly and especially Adarius Bowman of Oklahoma State. I'm more impressed with the both of them than either Doucet or Manningham and one or both could be available at either of our #1's. But WR Roy Williams has more value with the trade of a #1 pick than any fresh out of college WR if that is the route we choose to go with either of our #1's.

It would be an absolutely ridiculous move for Jerry to take a WR before the 4th round. Ridiculous! There have been FAR too many late round WR success stories over the last few seasons, and FAR too many early round WR busts. Trade for the WR we need, and be done with it.

With the two first round picks, go CB then RB, yes in that order. A ton of early round CB success stories (so long as you draft the proper talent and don't completely miss him, i.e. Cromartie), and the same must be said for RBs taken in the first or second (so long as we eliminate Julius from the discussion). We could even wait 'til rounds 2 or 3 for our RB given the tremendous depth at the position in this draft, and go for two CBs if they're there, why not. Why? Because we NEED them.
