Jamaal Charles' worth

3:09 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008 |
Calvin Watkins   E-mail   News tips

According to my boys at NFL Draft Scout, Jamaal Charles is the seventh ranked running back of projected backs coming out for the 2008 draft.

Charles' 40 is 4.39 and his low 40 is 4.32, his high 40 is 4.43.

Do you guys believe Mr. Charles will be a 20-25 carry-per-game running back?

Or do you believe Mr. Charles won't have much of a career?

No, not a 20/25 carry guy, but I sure would like to see him paired w/ MB3.

Posted by Andrew @ 3:19 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

This is great for the Cowboys!!! We don't have to pick a RB in the 1st round as we are almost assured that one of the speed RBs will fall to us in the second or third.

Posted by Heath @ 3:20 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

A 20 - 25 down back, I don't see, but I don't see the NFL having that type of back much longer, expect to see the work load shared. Charles has a chance to be the big play guy on an Offense, get him involved with the passing game, with that speed, there will be mismatch problems. I think he will do alright, but super stardom, I dont think so.

Posted by Jim @ 3:24 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

I agree that he's not a 20-25 guy. And I also agree he would look good paired with MBIII. I would prefer Johnson out of E. Carolina, but Charles would be nice.

Posted by Fonix @ 3:26 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

If he didn't have such bad fumbleitis I'd say he has a shot to be special, but he just didn't turn heads the way other running backs have. He can be a good player but not a star, or a 20-25 carry guy.

Posted by Jerry Jones, GM (NOT!) @ 3:33 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Charles is not even the 7th best scat back in the country --- let alone 7th RB.

More Texas hype for "one of their own." What koolaid drinkers.

McFadden --- not even the best RB on his team!

Posted by Michael in Chicago @ 3:34 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

This guy is lightning fast and stronger than you would think. He should handle 15-18 carries a game and would be a nice fit opposite the Barbarian. Once Charles get to the corner he can out run any LB and a large majority of the DB's and safeties in this league.

Posted by Bill In DC @ 3:36 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

I don't think many backs nowadays are capable of being 20-25 carry guys, nor do many teams want a player like that.

Charles is 6'1", 205 so he has nice size. Can he catch and can he block blitzers? Without being able to do those two things there's no way he would be a 20-25 carry back.

" East Carolina RB Chris Johnson ran 28 times for 223 yards and a touchdown, caught three passes for 32 yards and a score, and returned six kickoffs for 153 yards. He set the NCAA record for all-purpose yards in a bowl with 408 yards". Johnson is 5'11", 195 and also runs a 4.3, he can catch, and he can block.

We don't need McFadden

Posted by chris @ 3:46 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Tyson Thompson has speed, you don't see him even sniffing the field. I don't think Jamaal has the vision to be a good back in The NFL. Ask Cedric Benson

Posted by Big Kev @ 3:48 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

He wouldn't be a 20 carry guy, but he would be a great change of pace back to MB3. Something that the Cowboys didn't really get out of Jones this year. He is also a really good kick returner.

Posted by Saint Calhoun @ 3:51 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Now if he can only take Saint 'I am an Icon because I get multiple board run" Jimmy with him.

I suspect Saint "I am a self professed Icon" Jimmy has changed his moniker to 'Jerry Jones Gm" because he has been exposed as the obnoxious lard @ss that he is. It doesn't matter though. Once an unemployed obnoxious lard @ss, always an unemployed obnoxious lard @ss.

Posted by JL @ 3:58 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Charles would be OK at the right draft spot, but I'm not convinced that he's coming out early.

I also agree that the Cowboys do NOT need McFadden. I mean, he's a great player but nowhere near worth what it would take to get him. For that price he would have to be a player that could take over a game and carry his team to a victory over Missouri...Missouri...instead of getting shut down. There are plenty of good backs out there to go along with MBIII.

Posted by Brandon B @ 3:59 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

There is no way he is a 20 - 25 carry guy. If Reggie Bush can't handle a full load, there is no way Charles can either. And no NFL team is going to put up with his fumbling the way UT did. Mack Brown is saying all of the right things, but deep down the guy has to be thankful that he can go into next year with Vondrell McGee instead of butter fingers. On top of that, Charles isn't emotionally tough enough to play in the NFL. Texas had to come up with some nice flowery language to remind him to hold onto the ball.

Charles might have a decent career, but he won't be as good as Bush has been. Eric Metcalf would be a better comparison than Bush now that I think of it.

Posted by Bill In DC @ 4:03 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

JL,

Well, he didn't exactly get 'shut down'. If 21 carries for 105 (5.0 yd avg) and 1 TD is being shutdown, then We should pay whatever it takes to draft him. Arkansas is not a very good team and hasn't been all year. I don't think they should have been in a bowl game to begin with.

Posted by RAMS FAN @ 4:06 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

THE ONLY THING THE COWPUKES SHOULD WORRY ABOUT IS STOPPING THE MIGHTY RAMS NEXT YEAR. I FORGET, WHO HAS WON A SUPERBOWL MOST RECENTLY, THE COWDUNGS, OR THE RAMS?,,,,LMAO

I WILL TELL YOU THIS NOW. THE RAMS WILL RETURN TO PROMINANCE NEXT YEAR, WHILE THE COWTERDS REGRESS. (WAIT, THEY ARE ALREADY REGRESSING).

Posted by BlueZone @ 4:09 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Run, Run, Run. McFadden, McFadden, McFadden.
The Cowboys have a passing offense!!!!!!!!!!!
Unless we're going to change out the O-line for run blockers, any RB is a wasted pick.
We need another WR with a nickname like Bullet, Lightning or Rocket.
Also need shutdown CBs, a bookend LB like Ware and a SS.

Posted by Moronbusters @ 4:15 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

RAMS FAM,
Left click START, Control-Panel, Accessibility-Options and set Keyboard=off.
Other than that, your comments are proof positive that you're dumber than an Acme brick, the official brick of the Dallas Cowboys.

Posted by R P @ 4:20 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

RAMS FAN,

You sure do spend alot of time on the Cowboys blog for a RAMS FAN. GET A HOBBY

Posted by sandtrapjack @ 4:22 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Not sure. His stats online list him at 6'1" and 205. Well I met him once and I am 6'1" and I was looking down at a guy that looked more like 5'10".

Not sure he is big enough to be a 20 carry back.

Posted by Liljimmy @ 4:26 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

I think Jamaal will be a good NFL back but not spectacular. Every team needs a speed back and this is a guy who ran a 10.2 100 meters so his speed is legit! Tyson Thompson can't run with this cat.

Posted by L.J., Fla. @ 4:42 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Charles has been a decent back for Texas, though he fumbled at some imopportune times (K.St. 2006). Don't think that he would be comfortable in Dallas, because he doesn't fare well under pressure.

He should get another year of seasoning before hitting the pros.

Posted by Carl L @ 4:49 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

He reminds me of Tiki Barber. If he can strengthen his upper body and maintain his health over the long haul, he could be a very good running back in the NFL. He's got to get that fumbling problem under wraps too.

Posted by LonghornCowboy @ 4:53 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

The Cowboys haven't drafted a Longhorn since, I think, Lee Roy Jordan (or was it Bob Lilly), whatever it's been a long time. For whatever reason they have an aversion to them, though there have been some nice Longhorns around when the Cowboys pick came up.

Posted by BamBam @ 4:54 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Charles has some talent, but I'm not sure he'll make it in the pros. I'll site two factors.

1) He comes across as very inarticulate and mentally undisciplined. I could be wrong, but that's how I hear him in interviews. Most pro football players aren't exactly geniuses, but the successful ones tend to be fairly articulate and mentally disciplined.

2) While he has great straight ahead speed, he does not have great elusiveness or balance. I watched him on an end run, and while he outran the defense, it took him forever to get his body square and running up the field. The great ones can square up with a single cut off of either foot. Charles seems to make a wide arc rather than a sudden cut.

Posted by Jim @ 4:56 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Dude, neither of those guys were from UT.

Posted by larry giusti @ 4:58 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

bill in dc, I agree with you. I hope we take Chris Johnson.

Posted by Carl L @ 5:03 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

The only thing this team 'needs' is a CB to play opposite Newman (one with comparable skills).

Posted by JL @ 5:07 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Bill in DC,

Again, I'm not saying he's (McFadden) not any good...but for what he brings vs. what it would cost just doesn't measure up. Multiple first round picks, perhaps other picks as well, and maybe even a player or two. For another running back that may or may not work out? Look at Reggie Bush. I'd say he did some pretty amazing things in college. Is he a good NFL player? Sure, but does he make that much of a difference? Not without the pieces in place around him.

Dallas would be giving up way to much in the form of other players that they wouldn't be able to bring in. If they were up in the draft order and only had to move a few spots, I'd be all for it, but you're talking a giant move from where they are.

Longhorn Cowboy,

Wayne Mcgarity was taken in 98...I think, but they do, for whatever reason, tend to shy away from Texas.

Posted by RAMS FAN @ 5:13 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

MAYBE DALLAS SHOULD LOOK AT THE RAMS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES TO SEE WHERE THEY WENT WRONG! ONLY DALLAS FANS WOULD BIATCH ABOUT HAVING A 13 AND 3 RECORD. THIS IS WHY THEY AND THE FANS ARE LOATHED. HATED. DESPISED. YOU ARE ALL SICKENING. I HATE YOU ALL TIMES 2,,,,NO,,,,,,6! I SPIT ON YOU ALL. YOU DISGUST ME. I HATE YOU WITH A PASSION.

Posted by Jack @ 5:55 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Rams fan is probably about 9 years old and not very bright at that. Get a life.

Posted by Drew @ 6:10 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

I say we dont give up our first two round picks for mcfadden there are plenty of good rb's that will be available in the second round.
I think with the first round picks we should draft a cb for sure and then a wr TO and Terry glenn are getting up in age. These are players that should get consideration from us on the first two picks.

WR's Malcom Kelly OU, Deshaun Jackson Cal, Limas Sweed UT, James Hardy Indiana, Adarius Bowman Oklahoma State, Early Doucet LSU

CB's Terrell Thomas USC, Malcom Jenkins Ohio State,
Mike Jenkins South Florida, Aquib Talib Kansas, Reggie Smith OU,

Then get a RB like Jammal Charles or another RB with speed to go along with the Barbarian's power.

Posted by Bill in DC @ 6:49 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Rams Fan,

ROFL "DALLAS SHOULD LOOK AT THE RAMS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES TO SEE WHERE THEY WENT WRONG!" Why would Dallas have any interest in telling the Rams where the Rams went wrong? I certainly don't.

That and you really should locate the 'caps lock' key.

Posted by Dave @ 6:53 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

the kid will be a bust!!!

Hey Jerry Jones, you Moron!!!! Draft Jonathan Stewart, he's thee best back if he enters the draft, better than that chicken legged McFadden you seem to love...

Posted by Raz @ 7:06 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Rams Fan, I'm laughing harder than Bill in DC did at you. You seem drunk off your ass, dude.

Longhorn Cowboy, the reason the 'Boys have not drafted many Longhorns is not because they don't want to. It's because every Longhorn in the first round is always out of reach.

The Horns produce top 5 to top 10 picks every year.

Jamaal Charles could be good. He has the size and speed, but he's been plagued with fumble-itis.

However, he's been a big play back for my Longhorns.

Posted by LG @ 8:02 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Longhorn Cowboy:Bob Lily went to TCU.Lee Roy Jordan went to Alabama. Might get a Longhorn on the team sometime. Ross maybe last year. Charles would be fine early in the 2nd round.

Posted by petemac @ 8:30 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

I don't know if most of you guys have been watching the same games I've been watching, J reeves. hmmmmmmm? do I want to leave him out there?hmmmmm. Let me think about that for a nano second.NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!We need a cornerback that isn't taken in the 9th round

Posted by catch22 @ 8:54 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Why is rams fan on a Cowboys blog ? Why is there a rams fan? They suck and always will. Got lucky 1 time and this guy bought him a rams jacket and hat and cant wear it cuz the RAMS SUCK

Posted by RAMS FAN @ 10:14 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

THE RAMS HAVE WON A SUPERBOWL THIS DECADE, HAVE THE COWCRAPS? THIS MEANS SCOREBOARD FOR THE RAMS.

GEEZ, SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY WHEN THE COWBOYS WERE 1 AND 15,,,,LMAO.

FACE IT COWDUNG FANS, THE COWBOYS SHIP IS SINKING FAST. ROMO LOOKS LIKE TAVARIS JACKSON, AND MB3 LOOKS LIKE WARRICK DUNN. YOU IDIOTS SHOULD BE VERY WORRIED. ANOTHER DECEMBER MELTDOWN FROM THE MOST OVERRATED TEAM IN THE NFL.

AND YES, JJGM IS SAINT JIMMY. THIS "IDIOT" IS HIDING FROM ALL OF HIS HATERS.

Posted by Bill in DC @ 11:06 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Well Rams Fan what exactly are you going to do when Dallas wins this years SB?

And exactly how many SB have the Rams won? like 1? vs the Cowboys 5. Certainly seems to tell you who is better, now doesn't it? Oh, and technically the Rams didn't win a SB this decade because the 2000 SB was to decide the 1999 season Championship.

Oh and I forget, when is the Rams playoff game this year? last year? 2005? 2004? Oh wait, now I remember, the Rams were the team the Patriots bitch slapped in the 2002 SB, weren't they?

Dude, loose the caps, it makes people think you don't know anything about punctuation or grammar.

Posted by Incognito @ 11:17 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Dallas needs to address the problem at corner. Newman is great when full speed, but he is limpimg along. I think everything else will work itsself out.

Ramsfan is ammusing to me. I see nothing wrong at all with his asinine, animated, cartoonish posts. I think the guy is real. He just hits the keyboard after indulging in his favorite brain-cell killer.

I'm sure I am in the minority, but I really think Dallas wins the next 2 games with relative ease, then scrtath out a victory in the Superbowl with the Colts. I hope I am right, but I think that is the senario coming up.

Posted by Anthony @ 12:53 AM Thu, Jan 03, 2008

RB-Chris Johnson from ECU should be the guy brought in via the draft. Don't forget the free agents cause I like Derrick Ward from the Giants, and Musa Smith from the Ravens...both unrestricted and productive as 3rd down backs, meaning their complete RBs. Jamaal Charles has speed, but so does Julius. I hope he does well but I think he needs another year of college.

Posted by RAMS FAN @ 8:01 AM Thu, Jan 03, 2008

I AM SORRY COWBOYS FANS, I AM A STUPID 14 YEAR OLD BRAT WHO HAS HAD MY PLAY-STATION TAKEN AWAY FROM ME. I SNEAKED ON MY MOM'S COMPUTER WHILE SHE WAS OUT WORKING AS A SCHOOL BUS DRIVER. I HOPE SHE DOES NOT FIND OUT AND BEAT MY ASS AGAIN. I DO NOT HAVE FRIENDS AND I AM A FAN OF SUCH A SUCK-ASS LOSER TEAM THAT I DO NOT HAVE A LIFE. I COME HERE AND TRY TO DEVELOP SOCIAL SKILLS.....THE LESSONS COME HARD. PLEASE BE NICE TO ME....SOMEONE...ANYONE....

Posted by Fraggy @ 8:36 AM Thu, Jan 03, 2008

he really could have used another year in college, but charles could be a great back if he is allowed to develop. he was really starting to develop into a complete back towards the end of the year. we'll see if coming out too early ruins him, or if he can get with the right team that be patient and continue his development.

Posted by Ken In SA @ 9:55 AM Thu, Jan 03, 2008

Why you people feed the troll is beyond me.

Posted by Jody @ 10:47 AM Thu, Jan 03, 2008

No way Charles is a 20 carry back-not big enough not great vision. One of the few who might be that kind of back is the Stewart kid. D-mac doesn't look thick enough to me. If Charles is around in the third or fourth round he might be worth a try.
