Jerry on Ireland

Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones just got off a conference call with all of us, and was gracious in speaking on the subject of his now former VP of college and pro scouting, Jeff Ireland, named GM in Miami today.

"First of all the way I feel is that it’s great opportunity for Jeff, one I really on a personal basis wanted him to have," Jones said. "My thought has always been and philosophy is that if you want to help people that you’re working with advance then that helps you. That doesn’t go unnoticed, people see that. It helps when you’re sitting down, talking to somebody else about joining in their future, knowing that you’ll help them have an opportunity if given the chance.

"Everyone’s aware that I could’ve put this off until after the draft. I didn’t want Jeff to lose this opportunity. I didn’t want to do that, plus Wayne (Huizenga) had the same attitude about Jason Garrett, help us get Jason Garrett in here, while he was still under contract. Of course, I’ve got a good relationship with Bill (Parcells). And all of this fits real well."

Jones said there will be no draft pick compensation coming back to Dallas for releasing Ireland, just as there was no compensation in Garrett's case, and that the draft scouting process will go on under assistant director of college scouting Tom Ciskowski going forward. He also raised the possibility that Ireland will not be replaced.

On whether he considered relinquishing his GM title to keep Ireland, Jones said, "No. That's not the way we're structured. I'm going to make the ultimate decision on coaches and players."

IF DALLAS WAS SMART, AND WE ALL KNOW THEY AREN'T, THEY WOULD LOOK TO THE RAMS FOR HELP. THE RAMS HAVE THE BEST SCOUT IN FOOTBALL. (SEE STEVEN JACKSON)

RAMS FAN.

You go ahead and keep thinking about the draft.

After all, you are on the clock.

We'll worry about the draft after we win the Super Bowl.

Garrett was a great example to bring up in this context. If Miami had been stingy, Garrett might still be a mere position coach instead of one of the hottest names for a head coach position, and we all know what a waste that would be.

What goes around comes around. We're going to face a lot of attrition in the aftermath of a 13-3 season, so brace yourselves.

Hahaha, Eric in ATL! Nice burn! RAMS FAN, you are very annoying.

Posted by wwoody @ 5:26 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

and that's why we haven't won a playoff game in 10+ years

So sad, we are taking our scouting organization back to Lacewell and Jerry's Kids.

Par for the Jerrah course however. Heaven forbid ANYONE get credit other than him.

Jeff was so bad and his position so unnecessary and Jerry is so good --- we won't replace him.

"No. That's not the way we're structured. I'm going to make the ultimate decision on coaches and players."

Hmmmm...JJ is the ULTIMATE drafter I guess

It does not matter if you hate Jerry Jones or not. But he is a honest man. Even he gives the GM title to someone else, he will still make the final decisions.

We all know Parcells will make all the final decisions in Miami. But they said Ireland would have final say. It is not really honest.

what is with all the "we" talk? Are you guys actually on the Cowboys roster?

Posted by craigw @ 6:46 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Mark Perez,

It's part of being a fan. In that vein, why wear a Romo jersey if you're not Tony Romo? Why root for anyone if you're not on the team?

Fans are an indispensable part of any professional sports organization. No fans = failed franchise. So yeah, we are a part of the Cowboys organization even if we don't get official stock certificates we can frame on the wall.

Rams Fan,

See Damione Lewis(1), Adam Archuleta(1), Ron Bartell(2), Trung Candidate(1), Jimmy Kennedy(1), you are an idiot. The Rams are the team they are today due to poor drafting.

In the 70-year history of Rams football, only six other teams have finished with three or fewer victories: the '91 Rams (3-13); '82 Rams (2-7, in a strike-shortened season); '62 Rams (1-12-1); '59 Rams (2-10); '41 Rams (2-9); and the 1937 Cleveland Rams (1-10, in the franchise's inaugural season).

That's quite an organization Rams Fan.How many times have the Rams won 13 games? The good new is that your crummy team has the second pick. Draft that QB from Hawaii........LOL

Were you talking to me Mark?

Posted by Jeremy @ 9:23 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008

Jerry is going to drive this talented team into the ditch, just like he did last time (mid 1990's). Jerry has proven that he can not draft well, does not make good trades, and does not do well in free agency, without Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcells, and Jeff Ireland. Yeah, I guess we get to bring Larry Lacewell out of retirement so we can start drafting the Shane Hannah's of college football in the 2nd round.

"We'll worry about the draft after we win the Superbowl"?

ERIC IN ATLANTA,,,,I DON'T THINK THE FALCONS MADE THE PLAY-OFFS,,HOW ARE THEY GOING TO WIN THE SUPERBOWL? HOW STUPID DO YOU FEEL RIGHT ABOUT NOW?

Posted by Todd @ 8:10 AM Thu, Jan 03, 2008

First of all we aren't going to win a Super Bowl this yr. The Pats are going to win the Super Bowl. Second of all Jerry is on such a power kick. The Cowboys had a good intra-structure w/ Parcells and Ireland, now its blown to hell. A team is only as good as the front office.

Posted by Fonix @ 8:41 AM Thu, Jan 03, 2008

Jerry still has a "Director of College Scouting" in place. He also has a "Director of Pro Scouting" in place. Jeff Ireland was just the supervisor of those two guys. Ultimately they did the work, Ireland discussed it with JJ approved it. Now the decision is just going straight to JJ, but I think they'll be fine. I mean had anyone really even heard of Ireland until his name came up recently?

Posted by Gary @ 8:45 AM Thu, Jan 03, 2008

What the he!! is a "intra-structure"
