![]() JOHN F. RHODES / DMN Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones was asked the question point-blank: Do you re-evaluate Wade's performance in light of tonight's playoff flop? His answer was just as succinct. "No. No. No," Jones said. "I said nothing that we did in the playoffs would affect the status of his job. It’s not an issue. He’s our head coach." As for the status of offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and assistant head coach Tony Sparano, each of whom is in the running for multiple head coaching openings, Jones said he's prepared to lose either of them. And he reiterated that the potential loss of an assistant will not affect his decision-making in regards to the head coach. That decision, he says, has been made. "I can’t elaborate on (Sparano and Garrett), but certainly part of my job is to make sure that, on a timely basis, we’re able to address what happens to our staff," Jones said. "When you enjoy success, you’re going to lose coaches. I should and do have prospective coaches I would think of if we have openings." |

Jerry is still Jerry. He won't change. He is still the guy who fired Jimmy and destroyed this team.
Posted by Paulyboo @ 8:24 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
it is what it is. Jerry would be a fool to do anything with Phillips. The better team (clearly) lost to a team they play twice a season and beat already twice this season.
This was the Giants superbowl and the Cowboys tripped over themselves. Dropped TD's, catches, penalty's, etc.
I give the giants credit as the engine that could, but we all know they are a nonfactor from here on out.
Time to get a third corner for Jacques Reeves, a safety to replace Williams (see Milloy getting cut a few years ago from NE), and a RB to replace Jones and give Barber some help.
There are plenty of receivers avl. this year in free agency to complement Owens.
Defense is still young. Time to move on. I wish the Giants the best, but Giants fans between you and I, I wouldn't make Arizona arrangements.
Next Sunday we'll both be buy snacks for the Superbowl game of Packs/Patriots.

Great. What's next, 15 and 1 with another first round exit? NO DECENT HEAD COACH has a team with 11 penalties in a playoff game. Complete breakdown of fundamentals and that is your coach at work. Wade is not the answer, and I'm not being too harsh here. He had his chance and blew it big time. Before we let these other guys get away (Sparano & Garrett), let's seriously consider promoting one of them.
Posted by Timothy @ 8:26 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
That's too bad.
Wade Phillips did not have Dallas prepared to withstand the New York intensity level for 60 minutes.
Penalties, foolish use of timeouts, poor play-calling on the offense and defense.
Inexcuseable.
Wade is, basically, Chan Gailey.

You talked trash on us all week. You encouraged people to troll our MB, and you openly looked ahead to the NFCCG because our game was never in doubt. How are you feeling now?

Was it just me or did Crayton pull up a little on that 3rd down play with about 16 seconds to go? and was TO open on that last play? a C- effort we don't deserve to win

The Cowboys didn't deserve to go to the NFC Championship. Dropped passes, penalties at the worst possible times, and a quarterback who, two years in a row, decides to turn off his focus on football to date some blond bimbo singer at the end of the season. As long as Romo is quarterback (and he's as cavalier as he is), this team won't see a Superbowl, unless they're watching it on TV.

Seriously, Does anyone need a suite for Phoenix? I won't be needing it now.
Posted by ajb @ 8:35 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Wade is a Shottenheimer disciple....what should we expect? He's a choker...just get Bill Cowher in here and we'd be fine...what a waste of talent the boy's have. I was so happy we didn't get Norv, but now look? A bunch of chokers! I am going to be sick if I hear jerry talk about how great Wade is anymore...
Posted by tee @ 8:37 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
I thought Phillips would be a good fit for the Cowboys. I was wrong. He is beginning to remind me of Dave Campos. Jerry needs this type of coach to fit his ego. This should have been the beginning of a new era of winning football. Sadly, Jerry will not hire a new coach until we are back at 5-11.
Posted by Bill McMinn @ 8:38 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Maybe Romo will resist the temptation next season to laugh after a bad series or play. My prediction is he won't be a Cowboy in 3 years. He's got his money and his babe but us long-time fans don't appreciate the humor of bad play.

THE REALLY FRUSTRATING THING ABOUT THIS LOSS IS THE BOYS HAD EVERYTHING IN THEIR FAVOR, THAT PLUS, THE FACT IT WAS SUCH A TEAM LOSS.
I MEAN THE OFFENSE, DEFENSE, SPECIAL TEAMS, GAME PLANS, COACHING, PLAY CALLING.
OUTSIDE OF MARION BARBER, IF THERE WAS ONE ASPECT OF THE TEAM THAT PLAYED WELL, I MISSED IT. THATS IS WHAT IS SO FRUSTRATING. TOTAL MELTDOWN OF THE ENTIRE TEAM, NOT JUST A FEW PLAYERS OR PLAYS.

DEAR JERRY JONES,
Wade needs to be held accountable for this disaster. Our defense stinks, isnt that why we brought him in? He's not a LEADER......WE NEED A LEADER WITH BACKBONE. LISTEN TO YOUR FANS JERRY!!! WE NEEEEEED A LEADER!!!HE'S TOO SOFT JERRY, YOU KNOW HIM BETTER THAN WE, BUT IT SHOWS ON THE FIELD!!!!!!! JIMMY HAD BACKBONE, THE TUNA HAD IT.........WE NEED A LEADER, A YELLER , A MOTIVATIONAL LEADER, NOT A HEAD SHAKER! BRING US A CHAMPION TO LEAD THIS TALENT,,,,,

Jerry is the one that writes the checks and makes decesions. With wade phillips staying, we are going to have couple more painfull seasons and then Jerry would realize that wade was not the answer. This team was not prepared for play offs and I only blame the coach.
Posted by Mig @ 8:41 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Awful coaching.
Mr. Can't Fix It's speciality is defense, and yet his team allows a mediocre QB to cover 70 yards in 46 seconds, playing a vanilla defense that allowed the Giant to target Jacques Reeves.
BTW, Mr. Can't Fix It remains WINLESS in the playoffs. In life and sports, there are people who are wiiners and the ones who don't.
Finally on Mr. Can't Fix It, he couldn't fix penalties.
OFF COORD. Great play-calling in the first half, then on of a sudden goes brainless. The second half the Giants D was teeing off on Romo, and how many draws of screen do the Cowboys ran to slow down the pass rush ? NONE !!!
COACHING STAFF: TWO ... count 'em, TWO wasted time out in the second half (one on a punt return !!!). Boy we could had used them in the last drive.
Posted by JV @ 8:41 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Why not promote Sparano to Head Coach? He can get this players to be fired up. Plus, that would screw up Bill Parcells' plan.

Posted by Cowboy Fan in PA @ 8:44 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Pitiful!
Garrett forgot his brain.
Clayton forgot his hands.
Flozell forgot his hearing aid.
And the Cheerleaders were playing Special Teams.
After Miami raids the Cowboys during off-season, we'll be lucky to be a struggling 10-6 wildcard team in '08.
Posted by Bill @ 8:44 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Wade Philips, you are a loser. You will never win in the post-season, which is when it really matters. It is too bad that Jerry is going to bring you back.
Posted by Tom Brady @ 8:45 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Jerry has no business being on the sideline at the end of the game. What a disgrace. That's the difference between the Patriots and the Cowboys. You would never see Bob Kraft on the sidelines during ANY game.Romo and the rest of the Cowboys are very undisciplined and very over-rated. Have a nice offseason you bigmouth Patrick Crayton. As any Cowboy fan would say..."We'll get em next year."

Jimmy Johnson was and would have been the greatest coach ever. The Cowboys would have been the 1st team to win 4 straight Super Bowls and the Cowboys would still be a dynasty for 2 straight decades. Wade Phillips is a yes, sir guy for Jerry Jones and Wade lacks the ability to discipline.
Posted by Jeffrey Martinez @ 8:48 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
That cowboy team should be ashamed of themselves. They got out played and punk by the giants. Phillips did you have that team ready to play?
Posted by Rich A. @ 8:49 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
If the Dallas Cowboys were the "better team," it sure didn't appear that way today.
Don't blame it on a blonde, or Tony.
Where was his offensive line for pass protection? Who really played at 110% besides Barber? No one.
Dallas fans, don't beat up the Giants for playing a much more emotional game. Maybe your team will take the next few months off to think about what "could" have been.
Heck, they would have lost to Green Bay anyhow. If not, certainly the Patriots in the Super Bowl.
Better luck next year. Go Giants!
Posted by Smack @ 8:50 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Typical Cowboy fans. waw-waw-waw. You had a great year, your coach put things together and you-all expect the trophy the first try. Get a life, you need to have a team like Detroit, Oakland, Atlanta...then you would have a reason to be such cry babies.
No wonder there are as many fans that hate the cowboys as there is that like them.

Any cowboy fan that still thinks he want Jason Garrett as a head coach is smoking some good stuff.
This guy has cratered just like the offense he directs. Terrible play calling. for instance, how in the hell, on that final drive, do you call a running play on 2nd and 2 with the clock ticking down. Absolutely Insane.
There are plays that can be called with the defense is giving an all out blitz on your QB. Garrett didnt call any draws, screens, nothing,
and for God's sake, why doesnt Wade Phillips tell this guy that it is possible to do something but run on EVERY SINGLE 2nd and 10. Every team knows we run on 2nd and 10 almost 100% of the time, yet Garrett never changes.
This guy is no longer even a good play caller. Hell, I could put up more than 17-points calling plays myself with the talent on this offense. I truly hope Jason is gone and we can have someone calling plays that actually can adjust to game conditions.

FIRE Wade! His team played with no heart. Fat piece of garbage. And Jerry, let's be honest. You are getting old. You don't have many years left. Don't you want to win one more championship before well you know what. If so, fire Wade and also get a real GM.
PS thanks for drafting Bobby Carpenter over Antonio Cromartie last year. Who needs another corner, we have Jacques Reeves!!!

THE COWBOYS ALTHOUGH MANY PEOPLE THINK OF THEM AS GOOD HAVE TWO RECEIVERS I BELIEVE THAT ARE LIKE 35 AND 34 DON'T HAVE A REALLY GOOD RB AND PAID WAY TOO MUCH FOR A QB WHO IS COMING DOWN TO EARTH. BASICALLY PLAYING LIKE HE WILL FROM HERE ON OUT. HE MAKES BAD DECISIONS UNDER PRESSURE. THE DEFENSE IS SUSPECT IN THE SECONDARY AND AT LB.
ADD TO IT AN EGO MANIAC AS AN OWNER AND YOU HAVE FORMULA FOR DISASTER. JERRY JONES THIINKS HE CAN RUN THE TEAM, SELECT PLAYERS AND COACHES AND THIS SPELLS ONLY ONE THING AS IT HAS IN THE PAST TEN YEARS: MORE SUCCESS FOR THE EAGLES!

Jerry wanted a yes man and he got it in Wade Phillips. The only thing that will make this team turn the corner is if Jerry steps aside and turns the GM duties over to someone else. But we all know that's not going to happen with his Dallas-sized ego.

Wade does not have the competitive fire to win a Superbowl (or even a playoff game for that matter). Just check his lifetime record...now solidified. He is a laid back man, happy with the life behind him, and in the fierce competition of the NFL, the head coach needs to be many parts motivator and in your face super-charger.
Wade lost another first round play-off game with a much better team than his adversary. In his post game press conference, he relished his "life goes on" easy going philosophy. Add some sloppy oranizational skills (eg, the wrong number of people on the field,. frequent team penalties and indecision), and wade's reign is reminiscient of the great team Barry Switzer had under his belt that he had to coach out of a Superbowl his first year. Being a great coach is about much more than just making sure that everyone gets along and sings kum-ba-ya! Wade should be out. Make Jason coach; he is a fiercer competitor and a 24 hour a day worker, leading by example. Wade's short easy going era should be history.

hey... a lot of you guys are right. Some are off base. The opponents fans that post here are just low-class... but what do we expect from a bunch of yankees... some things never change.
Anyway... "players coaches" don't cut the mustard. First is was Barry... who won one superbowl... but probably cost us 3. Then it was Campo.. Now it is Wade.
Sorry... but nice guys finish LAST! especially in the playoffs...
Now... off to vomit....

how can you guys get on Campo? the guy basically had college talent. enough of the campo talk. i wish i had heard all these awful comments about wade when we won 13 games, tops in the nfc, a bye and how the players love playing for him. he's been coaching in the nfl for 35 but he sucks. LOL
Posted by zaphappy @ 9:16 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Very poor late game coaching by Wade and Garrett.
Barber is a great running back, but Jones is a better pass blocker and receiver.
Exclusively playing a gassed and ineffective Barber during the final two drives, rather than spelling him with Julius Jones was a bonehead decision.

A lot of Giants, Philly and NE fans on Cowboys blogs tonight.
peniss envy?
It's ok fella's, and for two of you Pats and Giants you are still playing. Go celebrate!
Romo's jersey was number one seller in the league this year, but it appears most fans here were the one's smitten by Romo.
It's ok. You all have qb's too? right?
Donovan you boohim draft day, love him birthday, and call him racist names the next day.
Eli "goofy" Manning who you don't even want to seemingly face the pack with... you'd rather gloat on this game than face your coming reality. right tiki?
and Brady. Not much I can say about him. I can only ask NE how you get him 4th round, and then Moss for a 3rd rounder I believe. You have to wonder what the rest of the league was thinking?
Oh yeah, I forgot. Much like many of the fair weather cowboy fans, they were saying Moss was a cancer yada yada yada and the Patriots did what winners do (and Jerry for his credit went for it with TO)... you go get talent, and you pay your coach a heckuva lot of money to bring the best out of them.
congrats Pats and cheer up Giants and Eagles fans... it'll be ok. As a Cowboys fan, i'm disappointed but content inside because I simply know we are better than you and will be for several years.

Who is responsible for this devastating loss? Jason Garrett, Tony Romo and the Offensive Line. Crazy Ray is turning over in his grave right now, I am sure.
Posted by Steve @ 9:20 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Ok. I stated on a different blog that Wade is an Ok coordinator but not a good enough head coach. As I had stated, I had these doubts and expressed them the minute that Jerry Jones named him head coach. He is not a motivator and not a disciplinarian. It showed in tonight's game. Of course, that players love a coach that is easy on them and is not going to discipline them. Who doesn't love an easy going coach that will laugh and cut up like he is your friend. 35 years in football does not make you a great head coach, his playoff record proves that point.
Posted by tee @ 9:21 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Oh David,
One other accomplishment by this coach. First No. 1 seed in the NFC to lose in this round since the NFL went to the 12-team playoff format in 1990.
Posted by jim @ 9:21 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
You all keep saying we need a leader with a backbone like the tuna, well how many divison titles and playoff games did the "TUNA" win with Dallas. anough said!!
Posted by Mike @ 9:22 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Slopping coaching and a lack of motivation was part of reason for the loss. Wade Phillips does not have what it takes to be a winning playoff coach. The Giants were using a 3rd and 4th string secondary and Dallas could not do anything. Things for Dallas to do this off-season.
1. Fire Wade Phillips
2. Cut Jaques Reeves
3. Trade Roy Williams to Parcells in Miami
4. Move Anthony Henry to strong safety
5. Draft a corner back and wide receiver in the 1st round.
6. Re-sign Marion Barber and Chris Canty
7. Re-negotiate Patrick Crayton's contract. He talked a big game and played poorly.
8. Do not re-sign Flozell Adams - His false starts are unacceptable
9. Find out why Jason Garett did not attack the Giants secondary.
Posted by Steve @ 9:26 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Mike, you have valid points. However, I think Roy Williams is a solid player just needs to be utilized correctly. Maybe you should give Jerry a call he needs a solid GM that can make this work.
Posted by Deboarh @ 9:27 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Come on. Stop blaming Wade or not having a good enough head coach. We had Barry Switzer and won a super bowl. Proof evidence that it takes a team leader - quarterback - and othe great team players who want to lead a team to win. The players get great money and commit to perform - let's make sure we hold them accountable.
Posted by Jimmy @ 9:31 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
Switzer won with Jimmy's team. Barry was not the leader of that team. Troy and Emmitt were both level headed, smart, and true leaders. They were the ones that led that team...Troy could be a coach in the league. The other players looked to them for leadership on and off the field. There aren't players on this year's team that are like that, therefore, their has to be a true coach/leader to lead them.
Posted by Atlanta Dave @ 9:31 PM Sun, Jan 13, 2008
This team -- which was largely built by Bill Parcels, not Wade Phillips or Jerry Jones -- showed a complete lack of discipline with its penalties and lack of focus in the 2nd half. (How many false starts can you have at HOME?) Remember that the Giants players openly criticized Tom Coughlin for being too tough on them, but look which team is still playing and which one's staying home.

Lack of preparation and discipline!! Wade's fault, yes! Tony and Jason just as much to blame, yes!! Does anyone want Jason and Tony as head coach now? Super Bowl teams finish strong and play to win. If in doubt, ask Bill Belichik.
PS As much as I hate the Giants, they played the last against New England the way it should be, to win. How many of us would have a job if we just phoned it in?

Coaches prepare players, and players execute plays, neither was successful today. Complete team loss, HOWEVA, the Cowboys have to make the obvious moves and stop trying to cover up the bad decision making.
1. Roy Williams and Jacque Reeves have to go. Possibly let Flozell and Terry Glenn walk.
2. BEG Jimmy Johnson to at least be a team consultant.
3. Get Romo a REAL QB coach.
4. Draft RB, CB, WR and LT.
5. Sign Free Agent CB Asomugha and veteran mobile QB like Aaron Brooks. Why not?
6. If you fire Wade (which would be tough to do) find a coach that demands accountabality, like a Cowher or Mike Singletary.

Look, I think Roy Williams is just as big a liability as any we have on defense. But, and please correct if I'm wrong, he signed five year deal with an 11 million dollar signing bonus before 2006, which means he still has three years to go on that contract. It also means, that if they release or trade him, the rest of the prorated bonus goes into next year's cap, and if my math is right, that's 6.6 million. No way a team is gonna take that kind of a hit for a player not even on the team.
So the way I see it - and I deeply apologize if I'm wrong - if that's the case, HE'S NOT GOING ANYWHERE! At least for another season. He may be benched, but he'll still be a Cowboy.
Now, Jacques Reeves, he's a free agent, so I imagaine he's gone. Question is, who do you bring in (assuming they address it in FA)? Randall Gay? Sean Springs? Chris Carr?

Mike, that's all well and good, but as for #3, what in the wide, wide world of sports makes you think that Parcells would WANT that loser Roy Williams? One of Bill's "man-boobs" could play better than Roy.

Phillips has never been able to win critical games. Tony Romo is the new Danny White...who was another likable guy who couldn't get it done!

giants fans commenting on a cowboys blog is pathetic.Does the paparazzi even follow Eli around?? Oh thats right who cares about Eli? New York is Yankees town anyway lol..Also Romo has been more succesful in his first 2 seasons than Eli ever was, hell it took 5 seasons for Eli to finally "Get It" Congrats on the win but this is kinda like a scheduled death sentence till next sunday's game at green bay and giants fans know that deep in their hearts. We're old news worry about Farve. P.S Eli has Dumbface

Mary Stortz, "Tony Romo is the new Danny White". Actually, Mary, that is not a fair comparison. Danny White won quite a few playoff games. He led us to 3 straight NFC Championship games. Now, if you want to make some valid comparisons, I got a few you can use. Tony Romo is the new Osama bin Laden; Tony Romo is the new Kim Jong Il; Tony Romo is the new Hillary Clinton; Tony Romo is the new "Hoss Cartwright"; Tony Romo is the new Elvis; Tony Romo is the new Jack Nicholson; Tony Romo is the new Quincy Carter; Tony Romo is the new Rock Hudson. Why is he like these people? Because they have won as many playoff games as Romo has.

larry giusti...hilarious! But on a serious note, I'm not in Roy Wms corner any longer. And that hurts...but he's not going anywhere because of his cap number. So I agree with someone's suggestion of benching him. It's not unheard of...and maybe he'll find some way to get better or return to form from his 1st couple of years.
So here is what needs/will happen to make a SB run in 2009:
1-Garrett stays...learns how to run more (stops Ernie Zampeze impression)
2-Sparano leaves for Miami
3-Hudson Houck returns as O-line coach
4-Left guard play is ungraded; run blocking improves because of #3
5-Julius Jones leaves or is signed to a modest contract to remain as #3 back; Tyson Thompson is gone.
6-McFadden/or Felix Jones becomes a Cowboy
7-If Felix with our Cleveland pick, our 2nd #1 brings in top CB or WR (if McFadden, both #1s are used up in trade with Parcells along w/Bobby Carpenter & a 4th or 5th round pick and maybe Spears as well.
8-our 2nd round pick becomes whatever we didn't get in the 2nd 1st round pick.
9-Aiken's ILB position is upgraded
10-Jacques Reeves gone
11-Nate Jones gone
12-Bruce Reade - ST coach, gone.
(Wade Phillips finally learns & doesn't repeat mistake after music city miracle of challenging ownership)
13-Todd Bowles leaves for Miami; upgrade in this position occurs...not all secondary talent fault
14-Larry Lacewell stays AWAY from Jerry and the draft
OK....tired of this mindless exercise. Had nothing better to do. The loss made me do it. Will sit back and wait to see what changes in staff and players occur. And to see if Wade can light a fire under his players and coaches for an entire season...well into the playoffs...or if he becomes Chan Gailey, 2 and done.

oh...number 4 above is meant to be "upgraded" left guard play...as in Kosier is benched in favor of Free, Proctor, or someone else.

Why does Jerry Jones feel as though he has to stand over Wade's or whomever the coach is shoulder?? At least Dan Snyder and all other self-respecting owners stay in the owners box. Who can work with their boss looking over their shoulder?

I have been a Cowboy fan for more than 30 years and I was never sold on this team because of the head coach. There were too many mistakes during the season. Somehow, mostly because of mediocre opposition, they overcame the mistakes. On Sunday they went against a better coached team and the mistakes caught up with them. Also, Roy Williams was a non factor once again.

Everyone is forgetting about Mr. Big Mouth - Patrick Crayton. What a joke. That guy talked so much trash, and where did it get him? Biggest choke job. Came up small in a big game. I would like to hear his quotes after the game.
Funny thing is, I am a Pats fan. But I remember that idiot Crayton saying, "If the Patriots make it to the Super Bowl, then we will see them again."
Ha ha, what a joke.

this is all jones fault he does not know football, cant judge talent, has never made one right move since he fired johnson, and look how he delt with the second greatest coach of all time Tom landry, he has the desire not the know how, he is at best an average football fan

why does any one say if tuna was there it would not have happened about the cowboys collapse, how short our memories can be , if i recall tuna had carter for the first year at q.b. then 43 year old vinny, then cant move drew bledsoe, wow great moves from the great coach, and they have made just as many mental errors in all the games i saw as a fan .so he was overrated for the cowboy job .he is a new york guy, so jerry has not made one right move since he fired johnson he maybe can give jimmy a call

Hear this all Cowboy fans, my prediction is as long as Jerry is the owner of the Cowboys, they will never make it to a Superbowl. This is a curse brought by the greedy Jerry Jones and his vision of making money, until he is gone, forget about the Superbowl, it will never happen.
