Ton of analysis coming today on Cowboys Blog, and we'll set you up here. The locker room will open at 11 a.m., and there's an hour of access there. And then coach Wade Phillips will be available at 1 p.m. Lots and lots of explaining to do. And I think it starts at the top. Fact is, I think this team bought into the idea of its own greatness. What had it accomplished? Really -- if you think team success in the NFL is determined in January and February -- the answer is simple. Absolutely, positively nothing. It's the head coach's job to knock that off. Yet, it felt like Wade Phillips went whistling on by the graveyard, and led this right to its funeral. By allowing this team to walk around as if its fingers were bejeweled, he allowed its edge to be taken away. And now, we're left with this. |

boo hoo the cowboys lost another playoff game and romo fell apart again at the end of the season. Shocking. And now TO is crying for Romo. Maybe his suicide attempt which he failed at, again another pattern of failure, made him see a light that he should not rip down the teams he plays for but they still stink
Posted by gpaq @ 10:54 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
how about Jerry?? Any other GM in the NFL that hasn't won a playoff game in 11 years would have been fired by now!!!!!
Posted by Bernardo @ 10:56 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
It's not like the other way worked either? I think blaming this on Phillips is the easy way out. The team, especially the D on the drive at the end of the half, and the O the entire 2nd half rolled over.

I am gonna try to be positive. Heart broken as I may be and angry as all heck. This isnt on Wade Phillips. He did a great job this year and he treats his players like men. I hope this heart break galvanizes this team and gives them a real sense of unfinished business going into next season.
Its a real shame we already hooked crayton up with a new deal. We dont need his type on this team. T.O. already had a teamate like Crayton. His name was Fred Ex. All mouth and no hands. He needs to examine his performance. He straight drops one pass and then quits on a route in the endzone that would have won the game if he had hustled and given 100%.
Posted by JD @ 11:01 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
I agree whole-heartily. Wade kept reminding everyone that they also "were 13-3" instead of noting that once you're in the playoffs, whether you got in at 8-8 or 15-1 it's a new season. I like him but I honestly question whether he's the man for this team. I honestly was concerned before each loss (except ironically the Patriot game, which I thought they would win) about their pre-mature sense of accomplishment. Hope they learn this hard lesson.
P.S. Crayton sucks.
Gonna keep reposting this:
Guys, here's Crayton's official Myspace page. Please feel free to leave a comment or send a message to him on what he can stick in his big mouth!:

Someone has to be held accountable for this embarrassing loss. I mean somebody's job. Who or Whom is it going to be? Jerry Jones has to place some heads on the "CHOPPING BLOCK" or the 'Boys can never move forward.

Average ticket to yesterday's Cowboy/Giants game -- $450
Tony Romo and TO's combined annual salary -- $11.73M
The look on Jimmy Jones face when they lost — Priceless

the cowboys are going to have to look hard at the makeup of this team and ask the tough questions. problem is who's going to ask those tough question? wade phillips? not likely. part of the problem is the head coach's lax approach and seemingly unwillingness to be tough on his players. in my opinion, it comes down to mental toughness. there are too many players on this team who are not mentally tough and that is the reason we've sputtered late in the season and in the playoffs the last two seasons. you add a coach who does not know, or is unwilling to, instill some mental toughness in his players and you end up with a talented team folding under the pressure of playoff football.

First of all, if anyone would have told me at the start of the day that:
Dallas would out rush the Giants;
Dallas would hold the ball for almost 40 minutes;
Dallas would only commit one turnover (end-of-half type);
Dallas would have more passing yards than the Giants;
Dallas would have more sacks than the Giants;
and The Giants would lose another starting corner in the game,
Then I would have told you that Dallas would win the game HANDS DOWN. What the general stat sheet doesn't tell you is how many penalties the Cowboys committed (and, esp., how many occurred on third down to force a first down), and the average starting field position in the second half.
Beat up Wade Phillips and Jerry Jones and T.O. and Romo and the Offensive Line and the cheerleaders and Jessica Simpson all you want. The fact remains that Dallas lost in a flukish way and will have to get over it.
This loss can either rip this team apart or steel them in their approach to such games to the point where they will not beat themselves and force the other team to play perfectly to beat them.
The choice is theirs.
Posted by Larry @ 11:09 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
It is totally Dallas' style to choke in the playoffs. You don't pick up your ball on the 18th fairway and say you had a good round. You gotta finish it.
Posted by PaulC @ 11:10 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
Parcells left and Wade was brought in for one reason: win a playoff game. Not win a Super Bowl. Not go to the NFC championship game. Just win a single stinking playoff game. Wade failed. His failure was worse than Parcells' failure. Wade must go. Mr. Fixit's Phillips' 3-4 defense is a miserable, miserable disaster. Fire his nonchalant, unfocused butt right now.
Posted by Habib @ 11:14 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
They lost because they lost their timing as the result of all the injuries and guys not being able to play.
this is not a 13-3 team,it is a 9-6 team(Buffalo,GB,Carolina,Deteriot)should have been loses.
Jones is the best owner in sports but he can not be a good GM because he is emotionaly involved in it.He needs to hire a strong coach like Bill Cowher to be HC and CO-GM.
Take a look at San Diego GM who made the correct decision to fire Marty.
Jerry needs to upgrade the talent and hire a strong and battle tested HC like Cowher.
We need:
1.OL
2.WR
3.CB
4.RB
we also got get rid of busts like Roy Willy,Carpenter,Kosier.

scattershooting while wondering where jessica was (blackie...where are when we need you?)
couple of old coach lines.
dick nolan - "the other guys get paid to make plays too."
tom landry - "december is for building playoff momentum."
looks like everyone wearing the star got caught eating the cheese...starting around halftime of the packer game.
this bunch fooled everyone, from local fans to national media to themselves to the general manager (who probably lopped off a slice of limburger for himself). in the final analysis, they weren't as good as everyone thought they were...even though everyone wanted them to be.
dallas is not three wins better than the giants. in fact today, they're not even one better, regular season or post.
there's plenty of blame for everyone to share. terrell got it right. they lost as a team. elimination of one mistake from every unit and who can say?
rats.
Posted by Greg @ 11:15 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
I am going to take a different approach which won't be apparent until the smoke and tears clear.
First, I want to thank Jerry and the Cowboys for an exciting season. But this year was different. The best team in the NFC rested on their laurels in December and in the bye week and lost their concentration and edge. That was different than last year, when they over-achieved. For them to overcome all the distractions, helter-skelter nature of the last month would have been remarkable and only overcome with concentration and focus on FOOTBALL and getting to the Super Bowl.
That is a COACHING problem and has followed Wade throughout his career, and by the way reflects also on Jerry allowing other teams to interview Cowboy coaches during this period. This and the approach by players and the owner that,'even if" we lose in the playoffs, we have accomplished our goals, led to this tragic ending.
So, the lesson here is that Wade's approach is not conducive to winning championships. To win the Super Bowl requires the pain, toil, and focus required and the Cowboys and it's leadership (including it's star quarterback), forgot.
Posted by Pfluger @ 11:16 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
Romo couldn't beat THAT secondary? What a joke. I guess this is what happens to a team with individual players like T.O.
The Giants played as a team, while Romo was busy waving his arms and stomping, like a three year old having a hissy fit.
I hope they all enjoy their All Star status. Bunch of whining losers.
Go Giants!

Where's all the trash talk now? For months I heard and read reports on how the Patriots were not as great as they are thought to be, how Dallas was going to send the Giants home, etc, etc. And when push came to shove (on their own font yard) the mighty Romo, TO and Co all failed to do their jobs and now have an early vacation to enjoy. Next time: look, listen and observe before believing your own press. Giants and Patriots may not be the best of the best of all time, but for this season, they were better than the chest-thumping 'Boys.
Posted by Laurie Elkins @ 11:22 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
T.O. needs to shut up, he can't put up and Romo needs to grow up. Jerry, you cannot buy a winning team. These guys aren't playing with a passion for the game, most of them are playing for the passion of a dollar and until you learn to see the difference yourself things won't change. It would be a shame to hold post game concerts to fill the new stadium won't it?

HOW 'BOUT THEM COWBOYS?????
You all suck! The Redskins would have embarassed you even worse than they did 2 weeeks ago, so count your blessings. Nonetheless, you were who we thought you were yesterday...losers!!!
Posted by AF in WC @ 11:26 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
What the heck were Romo and the rest of the Boys doing on vacation in Cabo? Why weren't they at home watching game film of possible opponents and throwing some new wrinkles into the offense?
You want to know who's fault this loss is you have to look no further than the Tony Romo. Leadership starts and ends with the QB on the football field and when you're QB would rather be sunning in Mexico with a bimbo than working hard on his football, don't be surprised when you lose to a team you shouldn't. You can sure as hell bet that Troy Aikman or Joe Montana stayed at home and busted their butts during the playoffs.
I can't believe the slack you all are cutting this kid for totally shirking his responsibilities, the coach for allowing this to happen and the GM (ha ha) for not exerting more control. Pathetic.
Posted by Steve @ 11:26 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
How about them ARLINGTON Cowboys. Maybe they will win in their new stadium. NOT!!!!!
Jerry can stick the cowboys where the sun don't shine. I stopped being a Fan when I heard they were moving to Arlington.

Marion “The Barbarian” Barber
He looked like HAGAR THE HORRIBLE in the 2nd half because he got his brains beat out in the 1st half.
Best picture of the millennium: Jerry on the sidelines watching Eli take a knee.
The Giants won the game with 3 seconds left in the first half, the rest was mopping up after the train wreck.
T-O, crying: Shut up! The man will stop at nothing to get his big stupid, face on ESPN.
ROMO: Merely reaching his true level. 36 million…you MUST be crazy.
Wade: Once a frog, always a frog!

It's just dumb to place the blame on Wade Phillips. He gave these guys some freedom and expected them to act and play like men and be held acountable for their actions and play on the field and some of these guys failed the task.
Crayton may not have lost the game BUT he needs to keep his BIG trap shut from here on out at least until he's actually accomplished something in this league. I think he pulled a big one over on Jerry to get that contract because he's NOT a # 2 WR.
Several of those dunb penalties where on Gurode who was NOT snapping the ball on the called snap and the line was already moving which resulted in penalties.
Flozell played terrible against the Skins and was pathetic the second half yesterday...time to let him hit F/A.
I predicted Roy Williams would have a great game...I was wrong. Still the same old can't blitz, can't tackle, can't cover timid, sissified safety he's been all year. He needs to attend several clinics in the offseason if they plan on keeping him to re-teach him some basics of football.
Anthony Henry, still hurt or just played badly? Watching him and Reeves playing 15 yards off the WR was making me sick. I'm not sure the Cowboys shouldn't use both # 1 picks on CB's. Hamlin and Newman played well but the rest of that secondary was worse than pathetic.
Barber played really good until the second half when the O-line decided to stop blocking. I love him as the starter but still like the idea of a 2 RB rotation and hope the Cowboys will find a good back to compliment him in the draft.
Still no excuses, the Giants just wanted it more although Green Bay will wipe the field with them IMO.
Posted by TG in Phila @ 11:31 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
I still can't believe it. It's a team loss, but certainly you can look at the Crayton 3rd down drop, the Davis and Reeves penalties were huge, and on and on. They simply choked.
I still can't figure out the end of game why they just didn't try to get a 1st down moving closer to paydirt instead of going to the end zone twice. And plus, only 3 receivers went out on 4th? No Witten, Barber, and no one over the middle?? Why?
I woke up today and thought I was dreaming, but unfortunately, it's all real.
Congrats to the Giants - here's to them beating GB and Lord Favre. Beating the Pats is going to be tough for anyone!
Not ready to think about next year yet.
Very Disappointed.

All I hear is the Cowboys had a great season going 13-3. The bottom line is the season was a failure. They went 13-3. So what? The Cowboys were the #1 seed in the NFC and they lose to a banged-up, tired Giants team at home. I also hear the coaches and players say that they did not execute. Some advice for Jerry Jones, sign players that execute. This team is full of players with large, long-term contracts that can't execute. It appears Wade Phillips will still be the coach, so next January us Cowboys fans can hear the same excuses how the team lost in the playoffs again because they did not execute. That is the same excuse as the Seattle playoff game last year. The problem with this team is the mentality around it. Maybe Jerry Jones is to blame? All I know is I am tired of watching my Cowboys lay down in December and in the playoffs. If I were the Cowboys players, coaches and owners, I would be completely ashamed right now. My suggestions for the Dallas coaches and players, watch New England and learn a few lessons on how to win in the playoffs.
Posted by big blue @ 11:37 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
the blog comments are right on: the cowboys thought they had this won already. remember: tom brady became a star AFTER he won. now, you have created a star in Romo, who is now facing mounting pressure. maybe you should have held back a year or two until he actually gets a big win before crowning him.
wow, the only thing more fun for a giants fan other than reading about philly fans after a loss is checking in w. the cowboy fans on a GLORIOUS day like today.
so will you guys be rooting for us next weekend?

Next year? Next year!!! Another long training camp, preseason, and regular season lasting until January. No way will I invest as much energy in supporting another Jerry Jones team. Back in the 60s, the Cowboys were Next Year's Champions until they blasted the Dolphins. From 1960 to 1971, the Cowboys went from nothing to two NFL championship games, two Super Bowls, and one Super Bowl championship. In the same amount of time, since its last playoff appearance, the Jerry Jones Cowboys have done nothing but move to the side of the road and have one bowel movement after another. Screw'em.
Posted by Mig @ 11:47 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
How about making Mr. FixIt lose 5 pound everytime the cowboys committ more than 5 penalties in a game. He would be in shape, doesn't he ???
Posted by TG in Phila @ 11:50 AM Mon, Jan 14, 2008
Jay, yes, the Giants deserved to win. They didn't make any dumb mistakes and they continually put pressure on #9. They withstood the 20 play drive, they won the special teams battle, Eli was poised and played smart, Spags put together a good D game plan, and on and on.
Big Blue, I do hope they beat GB. NFC east represent. (Not sure if I could do the same for Philly or Wash.)
Spuds, you're a f'in punk with no class.

#1 Wipe that silly grin off your face Romo and get serious. A couple of games ago you smiled after throwing a game ending interception. Landry would have corrected your lack of focus.
#2 Keep Jerry's skin stretched ugly mug off the sideline. You can never get too much attention can you Jerry? Does he really think that it helps standing next to the coach when the game is on the line. You are nothing but a distraction! GEEZE!!

What's with all this 13-3 garbage? The Ravens were 13-3 last year and see where it got them? Face it, the Vikings, Redskins, and Cardinals are on the rise, and the Cowboys will follow the Bears, Saints, and Ravens down the slide.

Hey Giants fans. Don't get too arrogant. I believe the Packers are going to take your team apart next week in Green Bay. Even if the Giants can beat the Packers, New England will take them apart in the Super Bowl. Eli Manning has had a few decent games, but let's remember that he is not a very good QB. I am sure it is only a matter of time until the old Eli returns and Giant's fans wish they would have kept Phillip Rivers instead of giving up the farm for Eli. Marion Barber shredded the Giants. Ryan Grant from the Packers will probably rush for nearly 200 yards next week.

Except for Ware and Witten, the entire team sucked.
Wade and Garrett should be dismissed, and Sparano elevated to Head Coach.

G-Man,
I can't wait to see the Packers tear the Giants up next week. The only gap larger than the ones the Packers running backs will be going through is the one between Michael Strahan's front teeth. Because your team won yesterday, you must think that they are invincible. The FACTS are the Patriots, Packers, Chargers are much better than the Giants and Eli is a bad QB. It must upset you that the Giants gave up so much to get him.The old Eli will return and it is only a matter of time until the NY media and fans run him out of town.

Glad to see Giant fans have as much class as their players do. This was their Super Bowl. Good for them... blah blah blah. Any Giants fan who can look me in the eye and say their team earned this win is blind or stupid. I could count at least 5 blown calls that resulted in a potential 17 point swing in this game. The Giants were out gained, out sacked, out passed, and out classed. It hurts quite a bit to have this game taken from us. I wasnt surprised to lose. You have to be playing your best ball to win in January... Unless your the Gmen and can have the refs hand you endless do overs during the ball game

Mike
Let me get this straight, you're saying that the Giants will get slaughtered by who, Green Bay?
Let's examine that closely, the 'pokes were the number 1 seed in the NFC, Green Bay is 2, the Giants 5.
So, in your world, the number 5 seed doesn't have a chance against the number 2 seed, despite the fact that they just dismantled the number 1 seed?
You're saying, what, Dallas didn't deserve the number 1 seed cause the number 5 seed beat them into weepy girly-men and actually the number 2 seed is the real "best team in the NFC."
Your right:
Dallas didn't deserve the number 1 seed.
See I believe we can all get along.
G-man.
