Snap count: defense

Here's the defensive component to our accounting of playing time. Let me know what you think about this being a regular part of my breakdown package next season by hitting the comments section below.

CB Terence Newman – 43 of 43 snaps (26 first half/17 second half)
OLB DeMarcus Ware – 43 of 43 snaps (26/17)
S Ken Hamlin – 42 of 43 snaps (26/17)
CB Anthony Henry – 41 of 43 snaps (25/16)
S Roy Williams – 38 of 43 snaps (26/12)
DE Chris Canty – 37 of 43 snaps (22/15)
OLB Greg Ellis – 36 of 43 snaps (22/14)
NT Jay Ratliff – 36 of 43 snaps (22/14)
ILB Bradie James – 34 of 43 snaps (18/16)
ILB Akin Ayodele – 30 of 43 snaps (18/12)
DE Marcus Spears – 19 of 43 snaps (12/7)
DE Jason Hatcher – 15 of 43 snaps (8/7)
ILB Kevin Burnett – 14 of 43 snaps (8/6)
CB Jacques Reeves – 13 of 43 snaps (8/5)
S Patrick Watkins – 11 of 43 snaps (8/3)
DE Stephen Bowen – 7 of 43 snaps (4/3)
NT Tank Johnson – 7 of 43 snaps (4/3)
OLB Anthony Spencer – 7 of 43 snaps (4/3)
S Keith Davis – 1 of 43 snaps (0/1)

ANALYSIS: As we mentioned in the Tale of the Tape, the pass-rushing triumvirate of Ware, Ellis and Spencer weren’t on the field all at once together at all, even after the wild success the “Cowboy” package had on Nov. 11. It’s fair to ask why. … One thing that was interesting was that Spears and Hatcher essentially split snaps at left end. … The Cowboys went into their “big nickel” with Burnett replacing Ayodele at inside ’backer and three corners on the field, with Williams off it, on five occasions, and to their base 4-2 nickel on seven snaps. … The only snap Hamlin missed was in a goal-line package that put Williams and Davis on the field together. Henry was also off the field on that fourth-quarter snap and the only other one he missed was a first quarter third-and-1, which had added Burnett to the front seven and left three in the secondary.

Albert, this is a great feature. I'd definitely include it next year. Thanks for all your hard work this year on these things.

I like this. Bring it back next year! You analysis has added greatly to this blog.

Love it, love it, love it!

Couple of observations. Roy Williams 38/43 snaps was about 38 too many. Reason why the pass-rushing triumvirate wasn't on the field together is because the defensive scheme was not-to-lose. They should attacked and attacked some more. If there is any QB in this league that can be rattled its Eli.....

I think it's a great feature and would love to see it next season. I'm surprised how few snaps Jacques Reeves and Tank Johnson played, and all the backup linemen / LBs in general. I was under the impression there was more of a rotation.

Posted by Nic @ 11:46 AM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

Note the total absence of one Bobby Carpenter. And Spencer only with 7 plays. Not much out of the past 2 1st rounders. Also note that of the 13 plays Jacques Reeves was on the field, all 13 of them TOTALLY BLEW

Posted by eric @ 11:51 AM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

love it - now we have evidence when we complain about who isn't playing enough.

Posted by "Bozo" the Wade @ 12:24 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

the "Cowboy" package of Ware/Ellis/Spencer was never on the field once together?...you mean our 3 best pass rushers never played 1 snap of going after Eli who invariably falters at the slightest hint of pressure?...man...I got to fix that next year!!!...

Posted by NY Cowboy Fan @ 12:28 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

Yeah Albert I like this too.

I cant believe Reeves was only on the field that many plays...seems like the G-men took advantage of every one.

I also think the D played not to lose. They were quoted during the week lead-up to the game as saying it sure is nice to know that the Offense is so good because it means that they dont have to do as much while on the field, just get the ball back to the O.

Thats not the attitude we need with playmakers like Ware and Hamlin and Newman on the team

Posted by Izzy @ 12:53 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

This analysis has a Yankee bias...not sure how or where, but I'm sure it does!

OK, seriously this is great. How many times did Eli pick on Reeves...yet he was only on the field for 13 plays. Obvious weak link. And Spencer with only 7? I'm not sure what Ellis is concerned about.

Playing the "what if" game...we took Carpenter--he of zero plays--one pick ahead of Cromartie. #@$!^%@...

You know, this is interesting. I got to wonder why Spencer, Ellis, and Ware where not on the field at the same time? I think those three, along with Canty and Ratliff, give Dallas their best pass rush, almost as good as the Giants Defensive rush.

I do got to ask this: If Dallas were to cut Roy Williams, what sort of salary cap impact does that take? He is just not the same player he used to be. I find it interesting that he did not make one tackle for a loss this season, the first time ever he has done that. Ken Hamlin is so much better. We need to use Roy's money to sign him.

Albert, this is great.

I try to do this myself when watching the game but you seldom have wide enough shots to figure out who is out there.

All that mixing and matching and yet they can give Ware a breather every now and then to keep him at maximum effectiveness. He played every down.

Never having the three best pass rushers on the field against Eli is a crime. Man, I am trying my best to be positive about Wade coming back but stuff like that makes it awfully hard. Maybe the other bloggers are right, maybe they were playing not to lose. Thats the only explanation that makes any sense if you assume Wade was not in brainlock.

Posted by Roy Willie(not) @ 1:24 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

How the hell does Roy Williams get every snap in the game but 5 and not get a single tackle in the game. This guy has gone from bad to useless. something (anything) has got to be done, even if it means keeping him on the roster due to salary cap and just sitting his useless butt on the bench?

Also, I understand that you need a rotation on defense, and that you have running and passing packages, but good lord, could it be that with so many guys going in and out that this has an effect on the overall success of the defense?

Maybe the cowboys have too many guys in the rotations for their own good.

Posted by Andrew @ 2:17 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

Kevin Burnett getting only half as many plays as Akin Ayodele is a travesty in it self. I don't think people realize how weak our ILB's are on this team. James is adequate, but nothing special. Ayodele does nothing every game.

Kevin Burnett needs to see the field. He is the best pass rusher and cover backer out of the group. This kid needs to be in the starting rotation next year. He can be a difference maker.

I think this info is very telling. Probably easier to digest quickly than the formations and personnel groups, although those are good reads too if you got the time.

Thanks!

I enjoy a lot of your statistical analysis. I wonder if there was any way you could evaluate Brian Stewart's performance as coordinator? We've got loads of talent, but sometimes we just don't seem to get the right players on the field at the right time (Spencer/Ellis/Ware, etc). I dunno if there was any way you could show his actual input/effect on out defense.

Keep up the good work.

I like this breakdown. You should use this next year.

Posted by Jason Azbell @ 5:00 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

Our defense is in need of one more big time pass rusher. Although Ellis had a great year, he's on his last leg. Albert Haynseworth would be a great addittion to the d-line. I'm hoping he's on defense, all I'm sure of is that he is a dominating presence for the Titans on what ever side of the ball he's on. As far as our secondary, what can I say! Terrance Newman is one of my favorite guys an is limited in his playing time due to injury as is Henry. My boy Roy hasn't been the Roy williams of previous years due to what? What's going on? I have never been as crushed as now considering how much better we were than the giants. Now,we get to hear how Eli has come into his own. Give me a break!

Posted by jason @ 5:09 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

roy williams is still the player he once was! Hamlin is put into better position than roy and has many more oppurtunities to make plays. Roy williams should be a linebacker. He's hard nosed and still a strong presence. Ask Darren Woodson what is wrong, he'll tell you! Cut Roy to sign hamlin, give me a break. Were in need of several things on defense and one isn't getting rid of our pro bowler Roy Williams!

Posted by BlueStarDude @ 6:07 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

Definitely do this for the games next year. Good addition.

Posted by Dogma @ 6:10 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008

These stats are great!

Amazing how Reeves can have so much impact on a game in so few plays!

Posted by david pevehouse @ 3:35 PM Sun, Feb 10, 2008

roy williams. i have watched him last 3 or 4 years. he doesn't cover deep well at all. he doesnt seem fast enough to cover back out of the back field and doesn't stick his nose in on every tackle. he misses as many tackles as he makes. his best position if he stays would be right next to james and spy the quarter back or any receiver crossing the middle 5 to ten yards out, namely a #83 type. thank for the opportunity david
