Super Bowl X: Captain Comeback comes up short

Super Bowl X (game story/highlights) is best remembered for the highlight every football fan has seen hundreds of times: Steelers WR Lynn Swann, the game's MVP, making an acrobatic, leaping catch on a deep ball over Cowboys CB Mark Washington. That play might have put Swann, whose career stats are pedestrian, in the Hall of Fame.

Another Hall of Famer had a shot to steal Swann's thunder, but Roger Staubach couldn't complete a comeback from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit. The Cowboys' 21-17 loss ended with Staubach firing three incompletions into the end zone.

The Cowboys trimmed the deficit to four when Staubach hit rookie WR Percy Howard for a 34-yard TD with less than two minutes to go. That ended up being the only reception of Howard's NFL career.

Dallas got the ball back with 1:22 remaining, and had its best chance to take the lead on the second-to-last play. On second down from the Pittsburgh 38, Staubach threw a jump ball to the 6-4 Howard. It sailed over Howard's head, and he claimed after the game that he was pushed. A prayer to Hail Mary receiver Drew Pearson was picked off on the final play.

Why was Howard in the game? Starting WR Golden Richards' ribs were broken in the fourth quarter. "Mel Blount just slugged me in the ribs," Richards said.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! and if Jackie Smith doesn't drop that perfectly thrown pass by Staubach the Cowboys win this stupid game. I still feel sorry for that guy though!

Jackie Smith didn't play in this game, that was 3 years later. Dallas played Pittsburgh tough but the Steelers were just the better team. Roger Staubach never beat the Steelers going 0-2 in Super Bowls and 0-2 in regular season meetings. But they were great games.

that play "might" have put Swann in the HOF? It DEFINITELY put him in the HOF, because outside of his performance in the Super Bowl he was an average, at best, receiver. His stats aren't even close to the upper echelon of receivers in NFL history.

Swann's best routes never involved safety involvement; he left those chores to Stallworth who was a much better all around WR!

Someone, anybody, tell Jean-Jockitch Taylor that he hasn't a clue and to quit being disruptive. You can also tell him that it is cheap to be controversial intentionally to get readers for his bogus, factless, opinionated print. JJT needs to be in the commentary section of Walla-Walla Washington's paper, not our DMN.

BTW, wasn't that the game that the Cardinal standout , then a Cowboy, dropped a pass that hit him in the numbers ?

WE got our revenge against The Steelers in the 90's Super Bowl classic !

didn't Lambert rag doll Uncle Cliffy after CH was clowing the Steeler's K after a miss? and then Uncle Cliffy started pointing for a flag after being thrown down by the toofless wonder? That one kinda hurt a little.

Swann's catch was amazing. Poor Mark Washington actually had him covered well. I was only 9, but I remember this game well. The biggest play was actually the block of a Mitch Hoopes punt out of the end zone for a safety. I can't remember who blocked it, but the Cowboys were leading in the 4th quarter at the time 10-7. That block led to a total of 5 points because the Steelers got good field position after the free kick and Gerela kicked a field goal. Great defense by both teams in this game.

Poor Jackie Smith. A great career, but he keeps getting labeled as losing the game. I was a kid, and that is what I remember as well.

However, that drop was not at the end of the game. I think it was in the third quarter.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jackie several years ago here in St. Louis, where he still lives. What a great guy to talk meet. I feel bad that this is what he is remembered for, not the rest of his Hall of Fame career.
