The No. 1 pick

10:21 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008 |
Calvin Watkins   E-mail   News tips

There's speculation that the Cowboys will trade their two first-round picks and Marion Barber to the Dolphins for the No. 1 pick and draft the great Darren McFadden.

Listen to me. Please.

Not going to happen.

Yes, the Cowboys love McFadden, but the 2008 draft is rich with running back talent. Dallas has needs at wide receiver, secondary and defensive line. A good running back will be there late in the first round.

Besides, why trade Barber? He is everything the Cowboys want right now.

So, please let's stop the madness on trading with the Dolphins for the No. 1 pick. And if the Cowboys do move up in the top 10, I'd rather take LSU defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey or Virginia's Chris Long before McFadden.

Hey Calvin, last week called and it wants its blog discussion back. Slow news day so you thought you would re-hash something that has already been run into the ground? Make yourself useful and fix this captcha code mess. 5th attempt to post.

WHY would the Cowboys need DL help with Ferguson returning and Ratliff and Tank Johnson in the mix as well?

Posted by Vix @ 10:47 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008

The boys are fine at defensive line, for now. Will they take Ferguson, instead of Barber in that deal?

Posted by DCFanatic @ 10:51 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008

Here's how you reinforce the thought that trading Barber is just crazy..

Regardelss of a trade or not, the Cowboys need another RB. Barber is not a 20 carry guy and Julius is gone.

Defensive Line? This has to be Bill Parcells or Jerry Jones writing this article. These are the two idiots who drafted a TE (Fasano) and a Kick Returner (Skyler Green) in the early rounds of the draft. My point? Drafted for positions that did not need ANY immediate help. I see them drafting ANOTHER pass rusher in the first round, and TRADING DOWN as usual for more picks in the later rounds. Picks that will not have an immediate impact. Ex. Stanback, who was drafted to be a WR, who was acutally a QB, and was injured. Need I say more...geez. I think we the fans could do a better job drafting. Honestly. AND WHY IS THE CAPTCHA CODE HARD TO READ...WHAT IS THE BIG SECRET WITH CODE...EITHER A PERSON CAN READ OR NOT. IF I CAN WRITE A COMMENT, SURELY I CAN READ

The defensive line oculd use a player like Dorsey or Long. The D-line is solid, but they would have a potential top-10 player on the D-line with one of those two. I never really thought the 'Boys would make the trade with the Dolphins, but you never know with Jerry.

Posted by fact @ 11:16 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008

barber is a liabilty is pass protection!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by BamBam @ 11:18 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008

JJT's speculation was for only one first, a second, and Barber. Such a trade implies a high first round trade value on Barber. IF Jerry can get that, he should consider it, although not necessarily to take McFadden at #1.

By the way, I'm still curious whether Carpenter and Spears would yield anything more than low round picks. Could the Cowboys get the Dolphins' pick in the SECOND round, for example, by including these two?

WELL, THE GREAT ALL-KNOWING WIZARD-OF-OZ HAS SPOKEN:

CALVIN WATKINS HAS TOLD US THAT THE BOYS WILL NOT BE TRADING UP FOR MCFADDEN AND THAT BRIAN STEWART WILL STAY WITH THE TEAM IN 2008.

Now this is terrific insight considering Jerry Jones doesn't even know for sure about these two questions.

Which position, if either will Dom Capers accept? Until we know that, we don't know what will happen with Stewart.

What will the cowboys accomplish in free agency?
Until we know that, we do not know if the other needs, basically wide receiver and cornerback will still be a priority in the draft. If they are not, Jerry may well trade up for McFadden.

Watkins, you should state that these are your "opinions", and not fact, cause you don't know squat for sure.

I agree with every bit of your post except the last few sentences. If the Cowboys did trade up, McFadden would have to be the pick. He is the best player in the draft, bar none. If it's a top 3 pick and McFadden is there, you take him. If it's 3-10 and Dorsey, Long, or Ellis have dropped or Talib is there, you take one of them.

All that said, there is no way Dallas should try to trade up to take McFadden. The McFadden dream dies long ago-when the Browns grabbed thier 4th win.

Posted by Cowboys4Life @ 11:32 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008

I like our defensive line compared to our WR corp and DB corp and RB corp. It would be an extremely poor decision to draft defensive line over any of those needs first. Plus on obvious passing situations we line up Ellis and Ware on the line anyway. No more surplus needed there please.

Posted by pdiezel @ 11:42 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008

Wht if they offered Carpenter and Spears instead of Barber? They were both Parcells 3-4 draft picks. Spears is good but Ratliff sliding over to start at DE would work and Carpenter makes for good depth, but so does keeping Barber and getting a McFadden

I agree with the idea of forgetting about McFadden and that there will be plenty of RB's to choose from later on.

The thing I find kind of funny is the speculation that Miami would actually accept two picks in the 20's and one player for the #1 overall pick. That's hilarious.

Posted by livin the dream @ 11:47 AM Thu, Jan 31, 2008

Tell ya what, Bill Parcells likes to surround himself with players he's "farmiliar" with. Let's give him BOTH Bobby Carpenter, (No. 1 pick) and Ferguson, plus our first pick in the the first round and go get McFadden! He can have those hacks, and we get a stud! My prediction on the draft, whatever Jerry does, it will be stupid!

Posted by Bill in DC @ 12:28 PM Thu, Jan 31, 2008

Calvin,

Don't explain that to us, explain it to Jerry. He's the one rumored to be wanting to do this deal.

Posted by Malcolm @ 1:05 PM Thu, Jan 31, 2008

I think this is the smartest thing you've written Calvin. I agree with your post except for the d-line need.

FYI....McFadden is slightly better than average. He's a tall Reggie Bush who can't run up the middle, with skinny legs. Plus he's injury prone and split time playing QB. He's not even close to being AP. What's the fascination when you watch his game tape? Personally, I'm not drinking that Kool-aid.

Does anybody know how to change a headlight on a 97 Honda Accord? Ah..go giants :(

Posted by Thomas @ 2:49 PM Thu, Jan 31, 2008

With T.O. out of the line up, the Cowboys offense was basically non-existent. It's extremely obvious that wide receiver is the most pressing need. Obvious to all, except those who have the responsibility of making the decision. "And" not just any receiver, by the way, we need someone who can stretch the field, not an over the middle/possession type receiver.

Posted by D-Mac @ 5:38 PM Thu, Jan 31, 2008

McFadden is a once in a lifetime back like AP, do it. Why trade down and get another run-of-the-mill back like Julius ?

Posted by livin the dream @ 7:33 PM Thu, Jan 31, 2008

My prediction is this run is O-V-E-R, (yes after one year) and it pisses me off! Bill will take Flo to Miami, possibly Ellis. Jerry will slowly take all this talent and dwindle it to nothing! I bleed blue, but I don't like what's happening at all!!

Enough with the 1st pick already... we all know Jones will do it if he can. He's an IDIOT. He's proven that time after time over the years.

Look at our last 5 drafts..

2002
1 8 Roy Williams SS Oklahoma
2 37 Andre Gurode C Colorado
2 63 Antonio Bryant WR Pittsburgh
3 75 Derek Ross CB Ohio State
4 129 Jamar Martin FB Ohio State
5 168 Pete Hunter CB Virginia Union
6 179 Tyson Walter C Ohio State
6 208 Deveren Johnson WR Sacred Heart
6 211 Bob Slowikowski TE Virginia Tech

2003
1 5 Terence Newman CB Kansas State
2 38 Al Johnson C Wisconsin
3 69 Jason Witten TE Tennessee
4 103 Bradie James ILB Louisiana State
6 178 B.J. Tucker CB Wisconsin
6 186 Zuriel Smith WR Hampton
7 219 Justin Bates G Colorado

2004
2 43 Julius Jones RB Notre Dame
2 52 Jacob Rogers T Southern California
3 83 Stephen Peterman G Louisiana State
4 121 Bruce Thornton CB Georgia
5 144 Sean Ryan TE Boston College
7 205 Nathan Jones CB Rutgers
7 216 Patrick Crayton WR N.W. Oklahoma
7 223 Jacques Reeves CB Purdue

2005
1 11 DeMarcus Ware OLB Troy
1 20 Marcus Spears DE Louisiana State
2 42 Kevin Burnett OLB Tennessee
4 109 Marion Barber RB Minnesota
4 132 Chris Canty DE Virginia
6 208 Justin Beriault FS Ball State
6 209 Rob Petitti T Pittsburgh
7 224 Jay Ratliff DE Auburn

2006
1 18 Bobby Carpenter ILB Ohio State
2 53 Anthony Fasano TE Notre Dame
3 92 Jason Hatcher DE Grambling
4 125 Skyler Green WR Louisiana State
5 138 Pat Watkins FS Florida State
6 182 Montavious Stanley DT Louisville
7 211 Pat McQuistan T Weber State
7 224 E.J. Whitley T Texas Tech

We have currently 18 players out of all of those drafted that are playing and MOST not even at a high level... so I'd say that we have about 4 to 6 players worth playing out of those 18...

THOSE folks are TERRIBLE drafts... but just keep asking Jerry. He knows all. So if you're asking me about the #1 pick I'm sure Jerry will do something stupid.. he always does.
