Three-game sweep

8:02 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008 |
Calvin Watkins   E-mail   News tips

According to STATS, Inc. NFL teams are 11-6 when they try to complete a three-game sweep, with the third game coming in the playoffs.

The Cowboys couldn't do it in 1998, but several other teams did.

The last team to accomplish this was the 2004 St. Louis Rams which pulled it off against Seattle.
That same year, Green Bay tried to do it, but lost to Minnesota in the playoffs.

Make it 12-6. The better team wins.

Now that's actually some good reporting. It's not quite as hard as the "realists" would have you believe.

Posted by craigw @ 8:16 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

The three game thing sounds like the Gambler's Fallacy to me. Those stats would back it up.

That said, divisional match-ups can often distort the relative strengths of the teams due to familiarity.

Posted by Joe @ 8:27 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

And what's the count for teams with the better regular season record by more than two games winning a third match at home after a bye week?

Posted by Lee @ 8:28 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

I'm concerned about facing the Giants, but you know what? This is the playoffs. If you have a first round bye, any team you face is going to technically be "on a roll." If it were the Bucs, then everyone would be like "oh no! Garcia is coming! panic!" It is silly. If the Cowboys revert to the form they had in the 3rd quarter of the season (yes, that is a big "if"), they will not only cruise past the Giants, they should handle the Pack or Seahawks just fine the following week. Now, the Pats are another story altogether but we'll cross that bridge...

If the Boys just pull it together the G-men will be sent home packing .............

How come I don't hear any whinning and crying about Brady enjoying his weekend off with his girlfriend away from Boston??? If he is such a dedicated QB, shouldn't he have been breaking down film of the Steelers, Jags, or titans even though he didn't know who he'd play? All this Romo/Simpson sh*t is just more and more what I have grown more used to in my 20+years as a Cowboy fan. When they are good the haters come from everywhere, and when they suck, we still have to deal with the haters. It sounds to me like everyone wish they could be a Cowboy fan and just hate that we are the premiere franchise!!

Here is a link if you don't know what I'm talking about with Brady.

Yeah... the midgets looked pretty good against... who was that team? The Suck-an-ears? Eli Gump threw no interceptions, and Bubba Strangehorn had his moment or two...

So, what?!? 'Dat don't be scarin' our heroes! Our guys play their game, and the midgets will be whining once again about how we didn't deserve the win... yadda-yadda-yadda.

...but I do think we need Terrell...

Posted by Disappointed In Romo @ 9:05 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

Yeah Eddy,
thats the same thing. Brady is shopping in New York with his girlfriend, a hop-skip & a jump from Boston and then going to dinner with her.

Bull!

I do hope all you Romo apologists are right and Romo comes out and smokes the Giants. He better, or like I have said before on this blog, he has set himself up for an offseason of serious second-guessing regarding his preparation and dedication to the task at hand - The Super Bowl.

I gave him credit for having better judgement than to put himself in such a position in the public eye. Defend him as you will, but setting himself up for a fall like he has done was just plain dumb. Very Dumb. I hope it doesnt take a big bite out of his ass as far as his adoring public is concerned.

Beating a team 3 times in one year? What's the problem?

Assume the probability of the Cowboys beating the Migets (Giants) is 60%. Ok the probability of the Cowboys beating the Giants 3 times is 18%. However, the probability of the Cowboys beating the Giants 3 times, assuming the Cowboys have already beat the Giants 2 times is:---60%.

Disappointed in Romo,

Maybe Brady woulda been better spending his time visiting his Bastard child that he never sees.

A hop skip from Boston to NYC, you are right. How far do you think it is from DFW to Cancun in a private jet? No waiting on a commercial flight schedule and boarding other passengers.

Posted by Mike G @ 9:24 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

Hey Eddy, Brady and his girl smile for the cameras as about as much as his coach Belicheat.

Posted by WilliamC @ 9:26 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

JKB,

Well put.

And you are totally right.

When they speak of the odds of beating a team 3-times in one season, they are speaking of a situation where you stil have those 3-games to play, and the odds of beating any team 3-times in a row are not good,

BUT, we are not dealing with those odds now. We are simply looking at "what are the odds of beating this team in a single game". What happened in the first 2-games has no bearing on those odds anymore, and your odds are just as good in that sinle game as if you had not played the team at all previously.

Brilliant observation JKB

How about dallas is just better!

Posted by Joe @ 9:32 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

Eddy,

No one cares what Brady does in his free time because Brady hasn't flat out SUCKED in 2 of his last three games (like Romo has) and his team didn't lose 2 out of their last 3 games (like the Cowboys did) and Brady didn't fail to throw a TD in 2 out of his last 3 (like Romo did).

Romo needs to win a playoff game. Until then, he better be preparing, not cavorting.

Posted by MAB @ 9:34 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

I hope the coaching staff and the players are prepared. The O-Line needs to block, the D-Line needs to get to Eli, and the linebackers and safeties(Especially #31) needs to lay the wood on the giants. Finally, Romo has to step up and play like a pro bowler.

Posted by mcindallas @ 10:06 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

like i said before....

If Romo throws for 300+ and 3TDs everyone of you bandwaggoners will be saying 'i guess that Mexico trip did him some good'.

Shut your pie-holes and let him do what he wants to do on an OFF weekend.

Regardless of what happens you will all have something to b*tch about. They could win the Super Bowl 2-0 and you all would b*tch about lack of offense rather than enjoy #6 and praise the defense for shutting out the other team and winning the game.

it's been too long since we've had something to look forward to in january and, hopefully, february. enjoy the ride and let 'em play. If you really need something to worry about try this coaching staff next season. we're getting raided by the pessimist and you're worried about Romo being in Mexico during a rare weekend off.

How many of you stay home and work during those three and four day weekends during the year?

Posted by Apache 61 @ 10:13 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

You can't compare Brady and Romo's situation. Brady has the 3 superbowl rings, the undefeated team, and will be a Hall of Famer. Romo doesnt have squat, yet he acts like it. This is all about perception, and until Romo at least wins a playoff game, he should at least act like hes huddled in his room studying game film, the playbook, or whatever. The problem is, Rommo doesnt care what the media says of him. He is enjoying being a celebrity QB, the one that gets linked to all the hot chicks. Brady could go to China with Gisele and it doesnt matter, that guy has already proven he is one of the greatest QBs in history. Unfortunately, Romo thinks he can get that pass. If the Cowboys lose to the Giants, Romo will not get babied like he did last year. No, he will deserve the criticism the media and fans will dish out at him for putting himself in these stupid situations. But hey, Romo doesnt care, so I am not going to care if he ends up crying again for losing the game.

Posted by Vaquero @ 10:14 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

T.O. is the giants worst nightmare. Their secondary just can't handle him. That simple. If he is ready to go this Sunday, then we will beat them with our O. If not, then our D must come into this game as prepared as ever and look forward to a dog fight at Texas Stadium.
And a weeks rest will give us the advantage and have the Cowboys ready to grab their first playoff win in over 10 years.
Go Cowboys!!!!
Cowboys 27 Giants 24

Posted by Brett @ 10:24 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

Yes, the Giants are on a roll and will prove more difficult to defeat this time around than the first two meetings. But this is the playoffs. It's time to turn it up and notch and play like the team that earned them the #1 seed. You will hear a lot this week about how the Giants are on a roll and how the Cowboys have not played a solid game in over a month. The Cowboys should use this as motivation. They need to come out aggressive and hit, hit, hit. And then hit some more. They haven't done it since the first quarter and a half of the GB game. The moment they don't is the moment they lose their edge. Playoff football comes down to two things: running the football effectively and playing solid D. The Giants did both today. Can we do it next week?

Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 10:27 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

These haters make me laugh. I guaran-f'ing-tee you that if everyone of these haters was in Romo's shoes they'd be doing the same thing. You've got 60 million bucks, in the prime of your life, and can get a girl on the level of Jessica Simpson...hell yeah you'd run off to Cancun for the weekend the first chance ya'll got. So STFU and ,,|,, sit n spin ,,|,, ya haters!!

BTW, why aren't people crying about Witten enjoying Cancun and not studying film? Last I checked it was Witten and not Romo who had a rough game against the Giants. All Romo did up in NYC was drop in 4 TD's while Witten had like 2 catches. So c'mon you hypocritical haters. You can't hate on one while another is doing the exact same thing.

And how do ya'll know that Romo and Witten didn't bring film with them? Maybe while the ladies were out shopping Romo and Witten were studying film on their laptop.

As for the 3 win thing. That thing is so played out. You could have a point if it was a 10 win team vs. a 9 or 10 win team where the talent is basically even. Instead we should be talking about how good the Cowboys are coming off a bye week.

Posted by catch22 @ 10:30 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

I love that Romo and Witten went away for a few days. Come back to work with a clear head and get to work. I bet going to bed with Jessica after a few tequilla shots isnt to bad either. If I was Romo I would take her over a victory anyday. She's hot and dumb. Romo is in heaven

Posted by tommex @ 10:42 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

Heck with the stats, it's a hated Division team
& they're on a roll...Romo's entitled, but his
celebrity BS is wearing a little thin, no ?
Plus all these coaches being interviewed ???
Useless damn distractions !
Romo is the hero if he wins, but Lord help him
if he doesn't. Wished his butt was at least
working out with TG, no ?
Plenty of weeks for Cancun, Tony...besides Jessica
does remind me of the chick in "The Natural"...
...bad vibes all-round. Hmmm, Eli shreds Tampa
while Romo's in Mexico playing celebrity.
Don't like this, baffling why Romo thinks he
couldn't benefit from working at Valley Ranch...
...bad timing, bad BS, coaches flying around
everywhere, Romo yukking it up in Mexico...
What's wrong with this picture ?
Alot, in my opinion.

Apache and Joe, you all sound just like the biased NE media. All down on all fours sucking Brady c**k. Why don't you go jump on Patriot bandwagon. Hatin' on your own QB for getting R&R during his bye week while sucking some other qb c**k. You guys ai'nt boy fans. The true fans are the ones who are optimistic here knowing we are gonna kick some giant as*!!! Tough to beat a team 3 times, gimmie a break, this ain't a 3 game series its one! You ever think the giants might be saying to themselves, "we haven't beat them once, but do you think the cowboys are worried about wuping are a** for the third time this year?"

How is this for you to, the Giants have had to go all out for 2 straight weeks, tonight they will get on a plane go back to NY, practice and then fly to Dallas, while our boys have been relaxing and getting their second wind, healing injuries, and Fu**ing some hot ass chic that nobody in this chat room would say no to!!!!

Posted by Lareign @ 11:05 PM Sun, Jan 06, 2008

A girl on Jessica Simpson's level? You mean a girl whose crowning achievement was having a reality TV show with the husband she divorced after two or three years? Whose music career is in the toilet? Who has no film career? Who apparently can't exist without a famous boyfriend, or at least "leaks" to the media about her famous boyfriend.

I will say this, though: She's very well liked by the people at US Weekly. But other than that, and regardless of how well Romo does Sunday, she's not "on the level," at least not a high-level. She's C-list, at best. And yes, Romo is an adult and can do what and who he wants. But I thought he had more sense than that.

And as for the hot thing-well, I am female, but she looks like a human blow-up doll to me. Rather fake.

And if they do lose Sunday, I don't think it'll be because it's the third time we've played the Giants. I think it'll be because they play like crap and for whatever reason don't have focus or maturity or something.

Apache61,
You are so right on! Brady has 3 skins on the wall and is headed for a 4th. He handles his off-field issues (and does he have a lot) well, as evidenced by his play.

Romo, on the other hand, has no rings/skins to speak of. He has only last year's Seattle butterfingers experience.

He is too concerned with being Mr. Jessica or Jessimo or whatever. He is breaking the very rule #11 of Parcells---don't be a celebrity QB. Romo can party like Brady alright----after he delivers the SB wins like Brady.

If the Boys lose Sunday and Romo has a sub-par game, look out. The ridicule, humiliation and anger will be out of control and Romo will have no one to blame except himself.

The only thing I would be worrying about this weekend would be Roy trying to cover Shockey. But guess what Shockey's not playing the cowboy's secondary gets better every week. The tight end they have playing in place of Shockey might make a few plays but he isn't Jeremy Shockey.

Cowboys 24-Giants 14

I disagree. Football is Romo's job and its crunch time. I am uncomfortable with this kind of vacation whether he plays badly or not. Its not a good sign for him to parade around his celebrity in the most crucial part of the year. The time of year that means everything. I liken it to me personally. I am around Tony's age, I am building a company. I dont take time off for vacation because I am in the midst of planning for some big meetings that can solidify my career. I can socialize after i have made a solid name for myself. Not in the middle of the most crucial time of my career. Ditto for Romo. So i dont care if the finest person alive could be on my arm, my career at this stage of life should trump all. Heck they have only been dating for months. No need to jeopardize anything for her.

Posted by Tim Burns @ 6:24 AM Mon, Jan 07, 2008

You people are killing me. You're worse than a bunch of old women, throwing Romo-gossip around at the quilting bee.

If Jerry & Wade think it's OK for Romo & Witten to spend a couple of days relaxing in ol' Mexico, it's OK with me.

If Ms. Simpson was just some random hot chick from Balch Springs, (bad example), this wouldn't be a story. This belongs on Deadspin.com or in the Enquirer, not on a sports blog.

Like I've said many times to the so-called fans that are already looking for reasons to account for our impending loss, "Get lost"! Your caustic, whiny defeatist attitudes are the last thing this team or it's real fans need right now. At the very least, can you all band together and lock yourselves in a big room until after the Giants game. From the sound of this board, a good size hotel meeting facility should hold all of you pansies. If you'll agree, I'll buy your snacks and beer!

Ever think his vacation was taken as a means to settle himself down and relax before the biggest stretch run of his life??? What good does it do hm to constantly study film on 3 defenses, 2 of which he wasn't going to play?

Lay off. I've been on his back for the celebrity stuff but this is nuts. The only reason any of you even know he went was b/c of that media magnet wh*%e of a GF he has attracting attention. Players do stuff like that all the time and nobody even knows. Bottom Line: we are the better team and need to execute in all 3 facets to win. And we will.

Raysam. Please at least attempt to have the grammar of a 3rd grader before posting in here.

As for Tony and Jessica, why do I get the feeling this is going to be the battle cry of the New York media? I am sure they would love nothing more than to get in Tony's head and somehow make him second guess his little capade. Either way, this is not E! television here, this is football, lets jump off the celebrity gossip bandwagon and discuss this game. Anyone know T.O.'s status? Who else thinks the Giants will do nothing but blitz Romo, who will then make them pay with Witten over the middle?

Posted by Saint Jimmy @ 8:14 AM Mon, Jan 07, 2008

Wolfpakk,
You sure do have a high sense of self-worth if you're comparing your situation to a football player's. I'm sorry but your situation and Romo's situation are nothing alike.

First off, I really doubt that you've worked 6-7, days a week for the past 5 (going on 6) months. Even if you have I know that you're either a liar or in need of a life if you tell me that you also stayed in the office for Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve/Day. You see, football players don't get holidays. Since August they've been working 7 days a week (if you count their working out as actual work) except the 4 days off they got for the bye week.

And really, don't ya'll feel a better and more refreshed to take on the daily grind after a weekend away? Doesn't the rush hour traffic seem a little easier to deal with after a little vacation? Doesn't the boss seem a little more likeable after a vacation? Don't those annoying neighbors seem a little easier to deal with after getting away from them for a bit? Of course they do. So give Romo the benefit of the doubt.

There's more pressure on the Giants to win just one against Dallas. They've demonstrated two times this year, once at home, that they can't stop T.O. or this offense. Furthermore, Dallas played both games without Terry Glenn and a few other starters that are returning. The Boys are hungry and focused as stated by Wade and others during last weeks set of practices. It's time to put the women and children to bed because this team is ready to explode. It doesn't matter who they would have played.

WHETHER YOU SUPPORT ROMO'S OFF FIELD ACTIVITIES OR NOT - AND BOY WHAT A MIXED BAG WE HAVE ON THIS BLOG:

There is one inescapable fact that most of the Pro-Romo posters are missing, and it is the point that most Anti-Romo posters are trying to make:

IF ROMO FAULTERS SUNDAY - THE CRITICISM HE TOOK FOR THE SEATTLE BOBBLE LAST YEAR WILL BE A DROP IN THE BUCKET COMPARED WITH WHAT HE WILL INDURE IN THE OFFSEASON THIS YEAR.

It has NOTHING to do with whether or not he is ACTUALLY doing anything wrong - it is PERCEPTION!

Parcells tried to warn Romo about how public perception could turn on him if he put himself in a position like he now has. Fair? Guys, we are not talking about fair. We are talking about the QB of America's team who, like it or not, is being held to a higher standard than Joe down at the office.

I am going to say a little prayer Sunday morning that Tony blows all this away with a great performance against the Giants. But, support his off field activities or not, if he doesnt blow up the Giants, he is going to blow up his public image as a dedicated, focused, football player. No, its not fair, but its gonna happen big time.

Posted by nevi @ 10:20 AM Mon, Jan 07, 2008

Just because Romo IS better than Manning doesnt mean he will play better. Our defense couldnt stop an old lady crossing the street with a 75lb backpack strapped to her back, most of the time.

Posted by Real Albert Einstein @ 10:31 AM Mon, Jan 07, 2008

So, if Romo throws for 4 or 5 TDs on Sunday, should he take more vacations to Mexico with Jessica?
Should the rest of the players go to mexico on their off days?
Would you be happier if Tony stayed in Dallas and went out to 3 every morning?
Why is it different to go somewhere with Jessica Simpson instead of Jane Doe?

What matters is how hard he works this week. The cowboys earned the time off with their record. They can have a chance to clear the mind for the next 3 games.

If the Cowboys want to win Saturday, they MUST keep Julius Jones on the bench. This "Running Back" cannot make his own "Holes". If the play calls for him to go between tackle and guard, that's where he goes, weather there's a hole open or not. He goes down on the first hit. How in the hell can he still be called a "STARTER"?

Hey William, what difference does it make whether he spent his time off at home or in Cancun? It's not like he went to Europe. Are you unable to do your job after you come back from a weekend away? I'd prefer that he spent his time off in the most relaxing and reflecting place that he possibly could have.

What happens when he wins? I'll tell you what happens. You and the rest of the little women in here will find something else to dramatize the following week. Whitten went too. What do you have to say about him?

This blog is absolutely priceless!
