Just got off the phone with Calvin "Lucky" Watkins, who wanted to pass along some info about the Cowboys' search for assistant coaches. Word is that former Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron, who discussed the D-line opening with Wade Phillips and Brian Stewart yesterday, is leaning toward taking an offer from the Saints. Ex-Cowboy DB Dennis Thurman's name has surfaced as a potential replacement for Todd Bowles as secondary coach. He spent the last six seasons coaching the secondary in Baltimore. Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome said that Thurman is still under contract. However, Thurman could become available if new Baltimore coach John Harbaugh decides to bring in one of his own guys. |

Any truth to the rumor that the Cowboys are considering hiring a real defensive coordinator?
Posted by Bill In DC @ 12:57 PM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
RG Fan,
Why would we do that, we already have 2 (Phillips and Stewart). Phillips is the Co-Head Coach, Defense and Garrett is the Co-Head Coach, Offense.

Dennis Thurman would be a GREAT solution! Baltimore's secondary has been VERY good the past several years. Maybe he could show Roy how to get back to being Roy, or, at least somewhere close to Ed Reed.
Thurman was always a smart player and hard hitter. Crossing my fingers for this to happen

D.Thurman would be a nice addition. We can bring back "Thurman's Thieves." Balt's secondary hasn't been too shabby the past several years. New blood baby!

Although Thurman would be a great addition – the basic problem remains.
The Cowboys need a defensive coordinator!!!
Posted by Timbo @ 1:55 PM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
Please come back home, Dennis! How sweet it would be to have Thurman's Thieves Too instead of the current secondary. Coach 'em up, Thurman! (there's another cliche for ya).
P.S. - 5th try and CAPTCHA code is capturing nothing but irritation and frustration. DMN, please reconsider the value of spam.

RG fan,
I don't think you can turn out Brian Stewart considering:
1. He was new to this personnel.
2. This was his first time as a Defensive Coordinator.
3. He had to work with assistants(now in Miami) who did not have any experience in the type of 3-4 defense that Wade runs.
Lets replace those assistants and then see how the defense does in 2008. At least Brian is a Wade guy and not a parcells guy. Under the circumstances he deserves another year.

So, the Lions are dumping Shaun Rodgers, DT. Detroit Free Press says they will try to trade him or release him outright.
Does Dallas have any interest. He has motivational problems and weight control issues and has been suspended for four games for banned substances (steroids?). Next time he's caught its 8 games (like Tank Johnson).
When motivated he dominates games like he did the first half of this season. When he isn't motivated he disappears.
But, if Dallas can work him like Johnson, it would be really sweet to have a 340-350 nose tackle to pair with Johnson.

Does no one see the humor in the Cowboys not only slamming the door on the Ravens with Garrett and now raiding their assistant coaching ranks? That bozo "journalist" in Baltimore whose name I can't remember must be beside himself today.

I would be all for getting Rodgers at the right price (both trade price and salary price). I agree with you 100% that he can both dominate and be worthless. I think it was against Dallas that he only played about half of the defensive plays because he was fat and out of shape. If the Cowboys could somehow avoid that, they could have a bargain. That is a big "if" though.

The Cowboys don't need a defensive coordinator. Couple of changes need to occur within the lineup. First and foremost, how many of you can stand another year of Roy Williams? A playermaker needs to make other players better around you. He does the opposite.

CAPTCHA sucks, but I am going to beat it.
What's worse - CAPTCHA or me spending 20 minutes trying to post a crappy comment about Shaun Rodgers.

i agree thurman would be great..or maybe darren woodson he was a coach on the field when he palyed and helped roy williams alot...we do need a defensive coordinator..maybe rex ryan...
Posted by Dogma @ 3:02 PM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
Does Thurman have experience with the 3-4? Maybe it doesn't matter, as I've heard it said that the 3-4 is really more about the line and linebackers than about the secondary.

I am just curious, since everyone from the Cowboys is there,is there any young cornerbacks that look interesting? Seeing how we desperately need one and it is the place for them to be at.

breaking news from Mobile Alabama is that Wade cleared out all the free doughnuts on his "1st" try...HA HA HA...Hail to the Redskins...

Rogers for a 7th or a released pick up would be great. Bring 'em back to Texas. Be good for him. Although I like Bowen as a backup...you put Ferguson and Rogers at nose and move around the athletic Ratliff and Tank can play any line position in a 3-4. Lots of depth, great rotations with Hatcher, Spears (he aint goin' nowhere), and Canty. That would be a heckuva D-line.
Thurman coming back would be great too. I always liked Thurman. Fierce hitter, just a shade on the gray side of personal foul hitting like Bates. Still loved how he decleated Harold Carmichael and ol Weird Harold was swatting at imaginary canaries on the sidelines after that play in the game. He would help Roy a lot in getting his mojo back.
But sounds like Emmitt Thomas is going to get that gig. One scenario is putting Thomas as another position coach (he was a D coordinator..should know all positions) and still bring in Thurman for the secondary.
2nd try on that stupid captcha code. Get rid of it.

How about Dat Nguyen as the LB coach?
He was the assitant this year, and he's a student of the game. Is he ready?

Why would three coaches leave a 13-3 division champion to join a 1-15 team? I wonder if it has anything to do with coaching style; do they prefer the Parcells-like Sparano way of coaching over Wade's baby-the-babies style.
