Going into tomorrow without a rooting interest? We'll give you a team to pull for -- the Chargers. And it has nothing to do with Wade Phillips' connections to the San Diego lot, or any gratitude you might want to pay Norv Turner for building the Triplets Offense of the 1990s. No, this one would be more selfish for Cowboys fans. This one's to help the team's draft position out. Here's the way it breaks down. Dallas is slotted ahead of the Colts, whose pick now belongs to the 49ers. No matter who wins the NFC Championship Game, the loser will draft ahead of the Cowboys and the winner will pick behind them. But since the Patriots have been stripped of their first-round pick, the AFC title game will affect their draft position. If the Chargers win Sunday, they, the NFC champ and the 49ers will draft behind Dallas, meaning the Cowboys' slotted first-round pick will be 28th. If the Patriots win, however, then only the NFC Champion and the 49ers will select behind the Cowboys, meaning Dallas' pick will be 29th. The first-round pick the Cowboys acquired from the Browns will be 22nd overall. Follow the jump to get the last 10 guys taken 28th and 29th overall. 28th overall pick 29th overall pick CORRECTION (10:45 a.m.): I originally had it that the Cowboys' second first-rounder could be 29th or 30th. It's 28th or 29th, since the 49ers pick, acquired from the Colts, will behind the Cowboys, based on the Colts have a stronger strength of schedule ranking. |

Looking at the list, it seems like it would be better picking 30th instead of 29th.

who cares where they draft, the lower the pick, the less money you gotta pay, plus you can get a better discount deal. First round picks are overrated anyways, the nfl hypes up first round picks too much, half of these guys end up being busts anyways.

I still do not understand why the bottom of the first round is not aligned with playoff finish. It seems to me that the Superbowl winner should ALWAYS have the last pick, the Superbowl runnerup the next to last, the Conference loser in the Conference that wins should be next, etc.
Just does not seem right that the team that loses the Superbowl should draft ahead of Dallas

Bill in DC,
I think, and I could be wrong, that basically the NFL still thinks regular season record is a better indication of the strength of the team and should be more of an indication of draft position.
I guess there aint no perfect solution, but then I have a harder time with the whole NFL system set up to "reward" teams who do a bad job building a team, Not just in the draft, but in their easier 16-game schedules, their pecking order in claiming guys off waivers, you name it, the teams that do the worst jobs get all the perks.
I understand why, the league trying to keep all teams competitive, but I would like to see a more even playing field instead of rewarding bad teams and bad organizations for being bad.
Of course, I would also like to see the league hire full-time professional game officials and that aint never gonna happen either.

Tally - It's " ... ain't EVER gonna happen ... " Don't be a tool.
Sometimes I wonder why this blog sucks so much without my presence.

Shouldn't the Packers draft behind the Cowboys even if they lose this week? Both teams finished 13-3, but the Pack advanced further in the playoffs.

tally, I agree with the rest of your points, but a teams schedule is no longer based on the previous years record. You always play 6 games in your own division, then you play a division from each conference that is determined on a rotating schedule. That leaves two games, which are played against the team is the other two divisions within your conference that finished in the same place you did. That's why, for instance, we play the Packers next year.
I guess you can say those two games are "rewards" for last place teams, getting to play two other last place teams. But the other 14 games have nothing to do with your previous year's record.

You mean that the Patriots own the 49ers pick, not the Colts.
Agree with Big Lou, who cares where we draft. We stink at drafting anyway, this pick will just cost us less than if we were in the top 10.

the nfl should use a computer system AND have random schedules, do away with the positions, ranking, and all the bs. Goodell the draft should be based on where you finish, punish teams that tank games at the end of the year. Also the NFL draft is so overrated, Mel Kiper and all these NFL guys hype up players like charles rogers, pacman jones, mike williams, ryan leaf, and then when these players fail, they get so angry and rip the teams that drafted them. Im sorry about my rant, but im angry, the draft is just a waste of time, and the combine is a joke, i dont understand how a 4.3 40 yard dash is gonna make you a hall of famer, also why is the draft so far ahead, move the draft to the second week of march, and get on with the offseason, the nfl does things backwards, the draft should be held before free agency, also the nfl should push ahead the date for kids to drop outta the draft. I also dont wanna see kids that come to the combine, decide at last minute they dont wanna do any drills.

1998: 49ers -- Oklahoma State CB R.W. McQuarters
Whay does that name sound so familiar?

I'm pulling for the Chargers simply because I can't stomach a Favre or Giants vs. Cheats Super Bowl.
Posted by tally @ 3:00 PM Sat, Jan 19, 2008
Rob, you are right, the schedules don't penalize the better teams like it use to but those two games, along with everything else still rewards the bad teams for being bad.
Like I said, there is no perfect system, but there is something that just seems unfair for the teams that work the hardest to "purposely" be put at a disadvantage by their own league.
BigLou,
I understand your frustration, but you gotta have a draft unless you just want 32-teams fighting it out over every top prospect. Interesting idea about having the draft before free agency starts. They certainly could. Hell, they could have it in February for that matter. I have a feeling the NFL players association has their hands in the middle of that. If the teams knew what they got in the draft, they might not be bidding as much for those free agents.

Some good advice for any terrible team that wants to immediately become a contender next year: Trade your first round pick in 2009 to the Cowboys.
It worked for Pittsburgh and Cleveland.

Sorry, Buffalo and Cleveland.

You note that the Patriots lost their first round
pick. But forgot to menchen, they owns the 49ers
first round pick.
I`m fed up. My advice to you is, just don`t watch
the Super Bowl.
Posted by I'm fed up @ 8:58 PM Sat, Jan 19, 2008
boston bob, I don't plan to watch it. And I've seen at least part of every Super Bowl since X, when we played the Steelers for the first time.
And it's m-e-n-t-i-o-n. Apparently, all those taxes that Swimmer Kennedy collects up there don't go to the school systems.

No matter where they pick, the Cowboys have to try to get the best defensive back left on the board. Thewy should use both first round picks for that purpose.
