Watch your back, Wade

That's superstar columnist Kevin Sherrington's advice after Jerry made Jason Garrett the highest-paid assistant coach in the history of the world.

Fortunately for Phillips, Jerry put his faith in a young man of character and principle. The head coach won't need to worry about the offensive coordinator. But Phillips had better be leery of his owner.

Garrett wants to be a head coach, even though he just turned down two offers. His chances of it happening here are about as good as Tony Romo's odds of getting lucky at Ghostbar -- pretty much a sure thing.

But Garrett doesn't have a hand in the current head coach's back in an effort to push him out the door. He said he's not worried about what could be some interesting chemistry in the coaches' office now that he's unofficially the coach in waiting.

"I don't worry about that at all because I know what Wade's all about, and to be honest with you, I know what I'm all about, too," Garrett said during yesterday's press conference. "We're both all about team, and I can't say this enough – I'm really fortunate to work for Wade Phillips.

"I've told you guys this before; there were 50 people who told me last year what a special guy Wade is. This is before we're working together. And then when I had a chance to work with him, I can see what everyone is saying."

The fact is that Wade Phillips IS 61 and in a couple years, or so, he'd probably want to retire anyway. If Garrett is being paid HC money NOW, when why wouldn't the guy wait for Phillips to step down to take over the most prolific (historically) team in the entire league? It seems pretty obvious to me. He has a great working and personal relationship with the team's owner, has a long history with the team, wants to coach the team, etc. Jerry would be crazy to bank his team's future on a coach who will be 62 next season--not that 62 is "old", but in the world of the NFL, it's getting up there. I fail to see wht the big deal is here.

I believe Garrett and have no worries about the situation between him and Phillips. Even if he is the coach in 'waiting', so what? He's not ready now, and I believe they have a good understanding about the whole thing.

Sure, it's fun to conjure up images of Garrett lurking around the corner of the HC's office, rubbing his hands eagerly together, scheming how he's going to get into that seat. It makes for a very exciting article. Unfortunately, stories and popular opinions of how things happen are very often far from the actual truth. (gasp)

Ol nutless garrett is just waiting around to stab Wade in the back. nutless was to much of a wuss to take a HC job. He fits in with jerkoff jones as a classless loser. The two of them are perfect together. nutless and pathetic

Jerry should quit beating around the bush on the coaching issue and do what he wants. Name himself head coach, Wade Phillips DC, and Jason Garrett OC since he is paying them about the same money.

It will be interesting to see what happens next year if the Cowboys win an NFC championship. Even if the Cowboys don't win a Super Bowl, how do you fire a coach who wins a conference championship? Yes, Wade is 61, but that is not very old these days. He's got a good nucleus of young players here. He will be only two years into a head coaching role of maybe the premier sports franchise in North America. Why would he want to step aside?

These media monkeys are too funny. Seriously, they should be writing for soap operas since the real writers are on strike. I really don't believe most of what they say as it is pure conjecture to begin with. Get a hobby...

I believe Garrett and the Boys are both in ideal positions. I think Garrett's a tremendously smart guy, and knows that things must happen in a natural progression. Head coaching is something that has to be learned and while he is well on his way, I'm sure he knows he just can't possibly be ready yet in just 3 years. As young as Sean Payton is, he DID have solid years of experience before taking on being an HC. So maybe next year, and more likely 2 years from now when Wade's contract is up, Garrett will be more than ready to take the helm and Wade can retire or maybe step down to a DC position with his reputation intact.

And btw, the homer trolls from other teams that show up on other teams' home sites are really interesting psych studies. It's quite sad actually. Neglected at home, starved for attention, these subjects learn to live by the creed that any attention is better than no attention, then venture outside their homes to seek it anyway they can, taking any scraps they can find. Sad. But fascinating.

This story says at least three times in the last week Jerry or Garrett has had to answer whether Garrett will be the next coach. Then says that is not healthy. Well, well, well, Who is asking the question? The media. So Sherrington just admitted that the media asking this stupid question is unhealthy. Brady James was right about the media.

Billy Boy,

I was at Texas Stadium parking lot last night, where were you? LOL

Seriously, even though Garrett is a smart guy he can still learn a lot from an old hand like Wade Phillips. They got off this year to a great start, had a couple of players make some gametime mistakes and lost a couple of games.

As Wade's dad said, "This year we were knocking on the door, next year, we'll kick the SOB down!"

Packers rule, cowgirls!

Posted by CowboyUp @ 3:45 PM Fri, Jan 18, 2008

Well, Greg, you didn't beat the Cowboys...

Playing in that weak Central division makes it a lot easier doesn't it?

You should feel fortunate that Farve didn't have to come back to Texas Stadium again where he is 0-9.
