What Garrett learned during coaching search

As you may have read below, Cowboys assistant head coach Jason Garrett's press conference this afternoon dripped with gratitude directed to the Ravens and Falcons for interviewing him.

And here's where, I believe, smart people make gains. He may not have taken either of those jobs, but he did take from the experience and feels like he's bettered himself by getting a look at how other billionaire owners run their operations.

"People that have that kind of success in life – it doesn’t happen by accident, and the kind of organization they’re running is a reflection of the success they’ve had in their businesses," Garrett said. "The cultures that they’re creating in Baltimore and the cultures they’re creating in Atlanta – they’re special and they’re relying on the successes that they’ve had.

"I told each of them, in conversations I’ve had in my life, I’ve told each of them that at some point I want to interview you and I want to get my notebook out and start writing some of the things down that you’re saying because these are great learning experiences that I’m getting from Steve Bisciotti and Arthur Blank and the other people who were in the room because there’s really some fertile stuff and if you pay attention and listen to what they’re saying, it can really be a great learning experience.”

Great to see Garrett return to the lowly Cowboys and if I were Phillips and had any backbone I'd be bidding adieu to the puppet master! Ravens are better off with the inexperienced Garrett who really hasn't done anything to warrant such attention.

Garrett decided to stay after the team all got together, watched Grey's Anatomy, and had a good cry.

trolls...trolls...

looks like sour grapes & no class (read: ravens & giants) have nothing better to do than come over to the Cowboys side in hopes a real team (read: 5 rings) might rub off on you.

Get a life you bunch of trolls...

Star Telegram is reporting this evening that
Hudson Houck WILL be signed by the cowboys in the next couple of days as the new offensive line coach to replace Tony Sparano.

I remember this guy from earlier years and he is a hell of a good coach. Cowboys are fortunate that someone like Houck, who they know well, is out there. He will fit in just fine with this coaching staff.

Albert,

the details of Jason's conversations with the Ravens and the Falcons are somewhat meaningless.

He's staying.

I think what all of would like to know is WHO HAS ASKED HIM what he was thinking in trying to reinvent the offensive wheel in the playoff game.

You observed many changes in offensive scheme, play calling and personnel.

Have you gotten a satisfactory explanation for what Garret did on Sunday.

Have you asked him whether his unusual play calling wore down our own offense.

Have you asked him why we didn't get the ball in space to our premium play-maker.

Have you asked him why we tried to set up the pass through the run, instead of allowing our passing attack to set up the run.

Have you asked him why we stopped getting the ball to Owens in the 2d half.

Have you asked him why we didn't attack the open and vulnerable center of the defensive secondary.

THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS we want answers to.

We want to understand what happened on Sunday.

And heretofore we've gotten nothing but vague generalities.

The game was lost on the offensive side of the football, which meant the offensive coordinator has a great deal to answer for.

And so far, NOBODY seems to have asked Jason Garrett anything remotely pressing.

Enough of the Byzantine politics surrounding the coaching changes and interviews.

We had a team that should have gone to the Super Bowl, but lost in a first round playoff game to a team that was just waiting to go home in defeat!

WE WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT SUNDAY AFTERNOON!

Dan,

You are on the money with those questions and you are right, we have had few answers, but I suspect it will not be revisited by the press asking those questions because it is now the offseason.

I do know that part of the problem was that Wade Phillips himself told Garrett he wanted to push the running game more. Why? only Wade knows. Starting Barber was only what they should have done all season, but basically using him up in the first half with running too much, well, that was Wade.

what he learned is what a great organization he is a part of now

Giants got a late Xmas gift from the Cowboys when the Boys decided to donate an entire football game to Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers just to make history more appealing. It will be the Pack in another Ice Bowl against Pro Bowl QB Eli Manning and the highest scoring offensive team in the NFL, the New York Giants. The Giants will be donning their Hockey uniforms and huddling in an Igloo to prevent frostbite from affecting them in 10F degree weather. Frosty the Snowman will be the Head linesman and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer will provide half time entertainment. This will be the scheduled scrimmage game prior to the Super Bowl match between the Green Bay Packers and the talk of the town New England Patriots come February in Phoenix Arizona. Hope you enjoy the show, and make sure you drink lots and lots of hot chocolate.

I knew that Jason would return. I knew that this was business tactic and boy did it work in his favor.

It would have been a major risk to move to a head coach position after one year as an offensive coordinator. Jerry said he didn’t promise the team when he originally hired Jason as the OC but by the looks of the tiny pay increase I would think otherwise.

Dan's got it right, who cares what he learned in an interview. What did he learn at the end of the season and at the end of THAT game.
