After being asked a softball question on how he spent his bye week, the next one hit Cowboys TE Jason Witten between the eyes -- So what did you do to pass the time? Smirking like a kid who just pulled off an elaborate prank, Witten said, "I went with Tony, if you guys don’t know." That would be Romo, in case you didn't know, and Mexico is where they went. Cowboys Blog picked up on it Saturday, the day it went from rumor to hysteria. "I think we understand," Witten said. "I just went because I’m buddies with him. Obviously, that’s part of the life he lives now. But for the most part, it doesn’t (bother me), because you understand what you’re doing. "The whole team, we put ourselves in that situation, to be able to get away and relax, and come back and focus. I think the best thing as a team is get away from football for a little bit, then watch those games, and get ourselves ready. It’s going to be a fight." So did he see the cameras? "I didn’t see ’em," Witten said. "I think they’re coming from all over the place. But they’re not trying to get my shot, for sure. I didn’t have to worry about it at all." Most of the conversation was tongue-in-cheek. And Witten had plenty of fun with it. But the important part, in his mind, is that the players got what they wanted out of the trip -- rest and relaxation -- and are back to preparing for the playoffs. "I think Tony probably knew that it was coming," Witten said. "We didn’t really look at it like, ‘Oh, gosh, we gotta hide from everybody.' We weren’t really worried about it. We didn’t do anything wrong. I told him last night, I thought it was the best thing we could’ve done, go out there, get refreshed, get away and come back and know what we got to do." |

I like the way T.O is rehabilating his injured ankle. What a focus, no talk to the media, no partying or relaxing a bit and even work out on Christmas and New Year's day!!!
T.O you da the man!!! If anyone says you are not a team player, they lost their minds.

Let it go folks... I took more than a week off at Christmas and came back to the office refreshed and ready to roll. It's the same thing for these guys. They've earned it.

Witten on all the Mexico comments:
"I think Tony probably knew that it was coming," Witten said. "We didn’t really look at it like, ‘Oh, gosh, we gotta hide from everybody. We weren’t really worried about it. We didn’t do anything wrong.
Not the point Jason. You guys have set yourself up for what will be a field day on Tony if he performs badly. Bad judgement to put himself in this position going into the playoffs. Vacation could have waited.
Poor judgement for two guys who are supposed to be leaders on this team. Leaders don't vacation the week before the playoff games start for their team. You think I am wrong. See what follows a loss this weekend. You guys will be crucified.

Hey Talley. Get a clue....and a life.
Posted by subatomicman @ 5:46 PM Mon, Jan 07, 2008
Hey Tally, if anybody blames a Cowboy loss on a trip to Cancun, then they don't understand football. Wins and losses are decided during the game, not during mandatory time-off. Since the 80's players from all over the NFL have gone to Mexico on their time-off between games, like during bye weeks. He has found a woman he wants to be with, that takes some sacrifice and time, he spent his free time to cultivate his relationship, wow, what a crime. Get a grip people.
Posted by James @ 5:48 PM Mon, Jan 07, 2008
Tally...I somewhat agree with you. However, how do you know Jason/Tony didn't spend some time reviewing some film, going over plays, etc.? Maybe not the entire time, but enough to brainstorm things and potential situation to occur. Additionally, I'm hoping Tony has not shaken the feeling of how he felt during the last playoff game. I, and many others, don't want him to go through this again. If he loses, but played his heart out, as the rest of the guys, then so be it. But, if they play less than 100%, they have really only themselves to answer to. I just hope they have some new plays/schemes to put into the game.
Plus, we need the crowd to go beyond crazy. Not like Philly crazy, but the same enthusiasm. That, my friends, will give us a huge edge. Manning stated he liked to play here. If you want to know the real reason, that's why because the crowd is normally subdued.

subatomicman, actually NFL players started going to Mexico during off days, weekends, and bye weeks during the 70's during the height of the "Disco" craze. The favourite haunt of the NFL players was "Juan Travolta's", a swinging disco club in Cancun.

The thing some of you mental midgets don't seem to get is that anytime the Cowboys lose, they're going to get criticized whether or not anybody went to Cancun for a couple of days or whatever. See, oh, EVERY COWBOYS LOSS SINCE INTERNET ACCESS BECAME WIDESPREAD. If you cannot stomach the interest this team generates, go be a Rams fan. Nobody gives a sh|t about the Rams or what they do on their off time.
Posted by larry giusti @ 6:23 PM Mon, Jan 07, 2008
james, "However, how do you know Jason/Tony didn't spend some time reviewing some film, going over plays, etc.?" James, you were right. I have seen some video on U-tube of Jason/Tony watching film on a makeshift "screen" of a bedsheet on the wall of a local watering hole on the beach called "Paco's and Murray's". Also, although some "Mediots" are trying to say in another clip that Tony was "massaging" Jessica's butt, he was actually just taking snaps from her, while Jason ran routes.

You know, Roger and Troy never went out partying in Mexico during the playoffs around here. I've been a defender of Tony Romo, but I'm getting tired of this.
I hope someone asks him about the responsibilities he has to America's Team, The Cowboys, about focusing on the playoffs.
You could have been getting treatment on his thumb, studying film on the Giants, Skins, or Bucs, or doing something.
This is really troublesome and I'm starting to doubt whether he has what it takes to be the Dallas Cowboys QB of the future.
He needs to use his brain and stop thinking with his "other head". Embarressing.

Hey Larry, cheer if you want, but the only thing that will get me off your back is if you stop dishing out asinine opinions like "Matt Moore is better than Tony Romo". I see you didn't have the nuts to show up again until Romo had a bad game (after 7 straight 100+ passer rating games).

This whole thread is ridiculous. It's not sports, it's speculation...if they win, no problem, if they lose, we all have THE REASON spelled out in the National Enquirer. If Wade Phillips allows this, so be it. If they lose, maybe Wade will or should be the scape goat. Go Cowboys.
Posted by Tim Burns @ 7:10 PM Mon, Jan 07, 2008
Whoa, who said you could come aboard this party train so late in the game?
Look you weasels, I get on here & cheer because I like to. But I don't blindly follow this team...
You want me to quake in my boots because the retarded Manning brother put together a couple of decent games? No thanks, I ain't buying it. I've seen it before. Get pressure on him and he'll fold just like he always does...
He's the worst QB of the 8 still playing. His TD-to-INT ratio is worse than even Rivers!
The heralded Giants pass rush couldn't sniff Romo because of our OL play in two prior games. They'll admit that...While leading the NFL in sacks, the Giants still gave up 24 TD passes to opposing QB's. Withy a gimpy Burress, they have one of the weaker receiving corps left playing. Statistically, the Giants defense was almost identical to the 49'ers in 2007...Nothing to fear or write home about.
There is not an area of the field where I feel the Giants can match up with us if we're both playing our best ball on Sunday. Sorry if I refuse to jump out of windows because a bunch of limp fans with weak stomachs have a queazy feeling about which team will show up in a freaking playoff game. I have no such concerns. You act like all I ever do is come here & put you down for being negative. I have a reason to be positive. I also come with facts to back me up, not voodoo. Yeah, I may get a little long winded, but it's hard shouting down all of the naysayers.
Hey, but maybe you can help me. I can't find any video of the Cowboys fans around the globe throwing themselves into volcanoes or falling on swords in anticipation of the Cowboys beheading this Sunday? From the sounds of this place, I thought it would be all over the news by now...I DID hear that 913 worried fans died today after drinking cyanide-laced Cool Aid. They were chanting, "lar-ry, lar-ry, lar-ry"...
Posted by B Wood @ 7:19 PM Mon, Jan 07, 2008
Tim. Your comments are well taken. However, the issue at hand is "cancungate" or whatever. The premise that everyone is already figuring who to blame in the wake of a loss is disappointing, but it's also a media driven (over)reaction. Please Dallas, allow the team to finish the reason prior to ordering the inscriptions on the team's headstones...ESPN is bad enough.

B Wood,
Point taken. This has carried over from numerous other posts. A segment of "fans" here were dooming this team long before Cancungate. They were looking for reasons to blame our impending exit from the playoffs before we knew who we were playing. That said, I agree that in Super Bowl or bust mentality, there will be those that blame anything less than a title now on Romo's winter vacation. If someone in the NFC stands up & beats this team at home over the next 2 Sundays, they will have earned it. And whether some players went to Mexico or NYC or Hoboken on their down time won't be an excuse for players or fans.
Part of what I've read here really bothers me though. Some have made this a "morality" issue. Read the posts. People are questioning this guys leadership abilities or commitment to team by comparing it to their own little 9-5 world. Every player on the team will tell you he's the hardest working, most competitive guy on the squad. If it's "embarrassing" to you that a grown man, with a girlfriend and teammates went to Mexico for a couple of days with the blessing of his superiors, maybe you should find someone to root for that doesn't offend your delicate sensibilities. Geez, what pantywaists...

b wood, I'm with you, buddy. I think Coach Wade should take the team to Cancun the 2 weeks before the Super Bowl and just get back the day of the game. I mean, think how rested and recharged they will be. I took a month off from my work and climbed Mount Everest, and when I got back to work, I picked up right where I left off.

What do you think all the negative posts are going to accomplish?
I mean if you guys truly are Cowboys fans what do you think is accomplished by complaining about Romo and his focus?
Do you think attacking him and the rest of the team on this blog will help the Cowboys play better on Sunday?
If so, please explain. If not, then why all the hate?
Just curious guys.

You guys just don't get it!! Widdle larry doesn't need to come out when we win 'cause anyone can be a cheerleader like us. We need his great insight only when we lose so that he can talk about all the things we need to do to fix the team. You know, like trading Romo for Matt Moore. Just remember GM larry (rhymes with GM Jerry) said that Matt Moore will win a Super Bowl before Romo does. I know it's true 'cause widdle larry giusti told me so!!!

I would normally agree that this is more of an ET story but it's obvious that Tony has lost some of his focus since he started dating Jessica. That DOES make it a football story.
Posted by Buda Lombardi @ 11:12 PM Mon, Jan 07, 2008
Best thing about this whole situation is if Romo is letting his attention to detail slide due to his social calendar, T.O. will tell it like he sees it. He has a knack for letting the world know when the Q.B. aint on his J.O.B.
Posted by Not So Crazy Ray @ 11:18 PM Mon, Jan 07, 2008
Since this is a ridiculous topic overall, allow me to add to the absurdity with this trivia. Romo and Jessica actually were in Los Cabos and not Cancun.
And, also allow me to add that I'm very disappointed in Romo and Witten for enjoying themselves on their days off. I'm absolutely certain that the other players on the 4 teams with byes were home watching film, studying their playbook or lifting weights, then home in bed by 10PM. I can't imagine any of them were out drinking or chasing skirts. Never!
Posted by Jim @ 11:35 PM Mon, Jan 07, 2008
The greatest QB in the NFL, Tom Brady, would never do something so ridiculous, right?
Oh, my bad, during the exact same time Romo was in Mexico Tom Brady was in NY City with his famous girlfriend Giselle goofing off.
So do all the Haters think Brady is a bad leader and teammate now too? Shouldn't he have stayed in Boston and studied 10 hours a day during the bye weekend too?
You guys are completely overreacting to a rather normal bye weekend occurrence.
Let it go.
Posted by WilliamC @ 11:43 PM Mon, Jan 07, 2008
Jim,
You ask:
"I mean if you guys truly are Cowboys fans what do you think is accomplished by complaining about Romo and his focus?"
Are you suggesting you can only be a good cowboy fan if you are just rah-rah happy and cant discuss what you think are legitimate problems with the team.
I will suggest this to you. The more knowledgable a fan is of the team. The more knowledgable he is of pro football. The more he is a student of the game, the more he is likely to recognize problems that exist with the team. And I will also suggest to you that fans like that are generally as passionate as they come about their team and become frustrated when the problems, as they perceive them anyway, exist with their team.
So, NO, it doesnt accomplish anything to vent those frustrations on this blog because all it does it get the blogger called a fool or an idiot or worse, usually by bloggers who have much less real knowledge of the team, want to support the team regardless, like the high school varsity, and just don't want to hear negative thoughts. So they come forth with calling guys like that haters when they are anything but haters.
This blog has been taken over by weekend fans who know little about what they say but can sure come up with lots of four letter words to call the other bloggers. I for one have better things to do so this will be my last entry. Good luck to our boys this Sunday, and may a lot of you grow up and learn to respect your follow bloggers a little bit, whether you agree with them or not.

Let's see... I believe Romo made every practice and film session during the past 2 weeks. Had he not I'm sure we would have read about it. As far as studying his playbook, if he doesn't know the plays by now we'd be in trouble anyway. My bet is that he knows the plays, but that's just me. I would, however, like to thank the mediots for sensationalizing this so much because I'll bet Romo is going to come out more focused than ever just to shut everyone up. Ought to be a fun game to watch no matter what!

Posted by emoon3 @ 10:21 AM Tue, Jan 08, 2008
Did you see Tom Brady or Peyton Manning hanging out on the beach for their bye weeks?
No. And those guys actually played well in December. But they also both know that no matter how well you played in the regular season, you have got to be better in the playoffs.
When you are Tony Romo and people are already questioning your focus on the game since you started dating Jessica Simpson AND you have had your worst three games of the season, you should be working on doing whatever you can to get better. You will have the whole frickin offseason to make an ass of yourself fawning over Jessica.
Can you please just focus on football for the next month? Tony, you do well to keep your career going well, cause if football goes, Jessica will be right behind it. Believe it.

Too much focus on Witten and Romo going to Mexico.
The O-Line still has to block, the receivers still have to catch the ball, MB3 and JJ still have to run the ball, the Defense still has to execute their assignments, and the special teams has to perform.
P.S. This CAPTCHA thing is getting a little annoying.

Voxxy V "How do you know that Staubach and Aikman didn't fly to Mexico during their bye (Let's not forget it's DURING THE PLAYOFFS)?" I know because of two guys you've probably never heard of: Tom Landry and Jimmy Johnson. You actually think Roger could've flown off to Can Cun or Hollywood on every single day off AND kept his job?
All those saying "you must really suck at your job if you can't take 3 days off", certain jobs don't allow you to take days off at certain times. If you are in retail, you WORK during the holidays. If you're a CPA, you don't go to Can Cun on April 12th. If you're a Wall Street analyst, you don't fly to Mexico on the week your companies announce quarterly results. If you are an NFL QB, you work during the playoffs even if your coach tells you to get "off your feet". Can Timmy and Alby fly off to Padre during the NFL playoffs?
Posted by kameleon_o @ 7:15 PM Tue, Jan 08, 2008
Mr. Rogers,
Staubach couldn't fly off to Cancun on every single day off 'cause he couldn't afford it. You have no clue where Aikman spent his time off because there was no internet to report it. These guys got 3 days off and went all over. Some guys went home, some guys went on a mini vacation. It absolutely doesn't matter where he spent his off days or with who. Is it just the distance that matters to you?? Or that it was actually a nice resort where guys like you and me couldn't go that bugs you?? If he flew even farther to NYC and spent some time with Brady and his model would that be okay??
