We're being flooded with stories about how Eli Manning has matured into a franchise QB, and we will be for at least another 10 days. If the Giants pull off an upset over the Patriots, Eli will go from being a bust to having a bust in Canton. It's amazing how a playoff run featuring four touchdown passes and no mistakes changed perception of Peyton's little bro. Tony Romo is going to the Pro Bowl. Eli is going to the Super Bowl. Advantage, Eli, who outplayed Romo at Texas Stadium a few weeks ago. But which QB would you rather have as a franchise cornerstone? A fella in a New York state of mind might say that he'll take the guy who has proven he can win a playoff game. Of course, Eli was 0-2 in the postseason before this year, so I wouldn't worry too much about Romo's playoff failures. While Eli has certainly proved me wrong this month, I'll still take Romo, whose regular-season numbers over the last two years are far superior. Plus, Romo provides much better blog fodder. |

I'LL take the guy who worked his way into a starting job, and wasnt handed one because of his last name.

Without question, ROMO. Eli will implode next year.So what if Eli wins a Super Bowl, so did Trent Dilfer.
Posted by PaulC @ 11:11 AM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
I don't know anymore. The mexico trip and the late season collapse have left a real bad taste. But I don't want Eli either. Maybe neither.
Posted by Steve @ 11:11 AM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
People also need to remember that this is only Romo's second year as a starter and the team has already shown marked improvement. I'd take Romo in a heartbeat because I believe he's a real leader, and not just someone who puffs out his chest and pretends to be a leader.
Posted by Adam J @ 11:12 AM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
Eli's career will be remembered as the quarterback who failed to win a superbowl in his one and only apearance and was never able to satisfy his NY critics.
Posted by Chris @ 11:15 AM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
Just throwing this out there!! Patrick Crayton doesnt stop on the pass play towards the end of the game, that would have resulted in a touchdown and seal the victory would we still be saying Eli outplayed Tony??
Posted by Jeff @ 11:16 AM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
Dumb question. Move on to next post. It's Romo. That's a no brainer. The Giants got hot at the right time. Eli isn't winning the games. He's just not losing them. Trent Dilfer did that for the Ravens a couple years ago.
Posted by Avery210 @ 11:17 AM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
No one will ever claim Eli has the "it" factor. They'll simply say he doesn't screw "it" up. Romo has it and has shown time and time again. He's young and will only improve. Give me Romo 10 out of 10 times.

Romo any day. He's played incredibly, he's a great guy.
I'm posting this because I want Romo himself to feel some fan support to counter the media snarkiness on this. I appreciate Tim giving we fan's the opportunity to do so (assuming that is why he posted the question).
CAPTCHA errors: two.

Jeff, I was thinking the exact same thing about the Elisha-Dilfer comparisons. Elisha is what is now being euphemistically referred to as a game manager, meaning he does just enough to allow the defense to win games. If I need an 80-yard drive to win a game I want Romo, not Elisha. Unless Jacques Reeves is on the field, in which case I'll take Elisha.
Posted by James in Maryland @ 11:23 AM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
Eli is just a higher priced Rex Grossman! Romo is the MOFO !
Posted by Bill In DC @ 11:26 AM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
I don't think it's a fair question. A better question is - Would you take Romo or Manning, given that you'd have to give the #1 pick in the draft to get him?
I think Romo has more potential, he doesn't have as much experience as Eli, but I think he has more physical tools, can evade pressure better, and is more creative when a play breaks down.
So I guess I'd take Romo
3rd try
Posted by ap @ 11:28 AM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
I'll take Romo. The loser of the super bowl always seems to be invisible in the following year (see Rex G and Matt H), and their team follows suit.
Posted by Ranch Hand @ 11:38 AM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
Definitely Romo, he has shown that he can forget the mistakes and play on, a characteristic that allows him to be a scratch golfer. Eli doesn't forget and the mistakes seem to grow.
Posted by John @ 11:38 AM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
If our receivers could catch balls thrown into their hands and finish routes when we played the Giants, this would obviously be Romo. Right now, Manning is playing better than he ever has...that's barely a compliment. Romo can just take his game to a Montana/Aikman/Brady level at times, Manning hasn't shown that yet.
Next year with more speed at the 2nd WR position, Romo will be even more dangerous.
Posted by A-cast @ 11:49 AM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
I'll take a rELIable ROMO as in, 100% focused on football. He is a leader, a natural, confident but not cocky, marketable, and liked by his teammates. Eli doesn't have much of that. I think Romo learned a lot about the ups and downs of being AMerica's Team's QB and will handle it a lot better next year.If we can just get past the Rams
4th try. this is getting old. What is the vertical line? a 1, i, I, I hate u Catcha

give me the Redskins' QB Jacob Campbell over both of those losers!!!...better athlete than Eli and more disciplined and humble than Romo...Hail to the Redskins!!!...

That's an easy one: Romo
Posted by gpaq @ 12:38 PM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
good post Steve: Romo has only 26 career starts + is a natural leader. although i wish his celeb status was that of the boring eli.
Posted by Teddy @ 12:39 PM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
I think Romo has forgot where he came from. I bet he is not working as hard as he used to. Remember he used to work hours after hours to correct his mechanics. Is he doing that now? I bet no.
What is he doing now? He is chasing all famous girls available. Or at least he is made available to all these women. You know you need a lot of time and energy to deal with these women (there is a new blog today on this forum to prove that). He had late season collapses both years. Does it have anything to do with him dating all the famous girls? I think so. When did he start to date Underwood in 2006? I guess it was after Thanksgiving game or around that. Soon his performance went down.
This year with Simpson? It must be around Thanksgiving game too. I did not see any report before Thanksgiving game about his dating with Simpson. Sure he still played one or two good games after dating Simpson.
If his priority is to continue to chase famous women, he will not be successful. Fame and money will ruin his career. A lot of people are successful in hard times. But when they have good fortunes, they become corrupt. Money can corrupt a person's soul. We just hope Rome is not this kind of person.
Eli was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He has been in the lime light since he was a child. So fame and money will not affect him that much because he used to live in the environment. It is not all his last name to get him #1 draft pick. This is his 4th year. In the first year, he started to play when their season was already in the tank, out of playoff. But he led his team to playoff every season he played. He led them to super bowl in his 3rd full season as a starter. Eli is the Giants MVP during their playoff run. Please tell me who else is more important than Eli in their playoff games? He is not just a bus driver. Remember in the first half, Dallas took almost 11 minutes off clock on a 20 play TD drive. That only left them with 46 seconds with two timeouts. Eli led Giants for a TD without even using their timeouts. Even they did not get the 15 yards personal foul penalty, they would still have enough time to score. That was the most critical TD. It told everyone they could score quickly against Cowboys. Eli was faultless in the drive.
Romo has more better players around him than Eli. There are no pro bowler players on Giants offense. There are seven pro bowler players on Dallas offense including Romo himself. I know some of Dallas players are over rated and they do not deserve pro bowler. But everyone should agree Romo has a better supporting cast than Eli. So it is not fair to compare their regular season record.

You have to be kidding. People in New York would jump all over an Eli for Romo trade. There are two quarterbacks in this league better than Romo. One is named Manning, but it's the one in Indy. The other is the guy that will dispose of Eli's team in Glendale.
NFC East QB rankings:
1. Romo
2. McNabb
3. Manning
4. Campbell/Collins

Posted by Ami Heda @ 12:50 PM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
Both of these guys are good QB's from a skills perspective and barring injury will continue to be so. That said, I believe Romo is the choice for two major reasons:
- Romo can put the team on his shoulders and win a game. Right now the Giants have figured out they just need Eli to not lose the game.
- Although this recent ride may do wonders for Eli, I believe that Romo pocesses certain leardership skills that Eli does NOT. Maybe Eli evolves into an equivalent leader to Romo, but I will put my money on Romo.
Note: the point by "Chris" is well taken. If Crayton doesn't stop his route ... this conversation is not even happening. Or if Crayton catches that pass when we were deep in our own territory, he may still be running today!!
Posted by greg @ 12:59 PM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
I guess that I was watching a different playoff game than everyone else was. I seemed to see a Romo that did not have the support of his teammates (minus the teary eyed T.O.). As a matter of fact, they seemed to be ignoring him when he tried to extol them further in the game. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he lost the game by himself; however, he has definitely lost this team. The will not follow him. Some will argue that it is the Cabo trip. I don't know. I just know he has lost the team. This puts him in line with Danny White rather than Staubach and Aikman. He should have heeded the Tuna's warning about not becoming a "celebrity quarterback." At this point in time, I would take Manning. Neither compare with Rivers. That was one heroic effort. I guarantee that he has the support of his team!
Posted by tex @ 1:04 PM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
Everyone in the NFL would choose Romo, except two guys named Archie and Peyton.
To those that are jumping on the Eli bandwagon, be prepared to jump right off again, because the real reasons for the SB trip are as follows:
1). NY Giants defense. Their defensive play the last three weeks is nothing short of amazing. Piecing together 2nd/3rd stringers, shutting down Boys and Pack in the second halves, and winning on the road 3 times. Enough said.
2). Packers playing poorly.
3). Dallas playing poorly.
4). Luck. No shame in admitting it. I am the biggest Cow partisan, yet I would be lying thru my teeth if I didn't say Cows got lucky as hell in Detroit and Buffalo. The difference: Cows got lucky in September-November, and Giants are getting breaks at crunch time.
Now Eli has played error free football, but playing error free does not equal making plays. He is letting the stout defense and running game work for him and staying out of the way, a la Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson from years past.
Hey, fair football fans will respect what the Giants did this postseason and the heart they showed. But the REAL reason they are in the SB is their defense and running game, thrown in with a dusting of luck and poor play from the conference heavyweights.
Posted by Barry @ 1:10 PM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
This is the classic example of the QB getting too much credit when they win. Sure, he's managed the last few games well but how about that running game banging out the the tough yardage to keep the chains moving. Jacobs and Bradshaw have really been huge for that offense. I'm not too sure I'd call him a franchise QB just yet. They may be writing good stories about him now but wait till he stinks up the Superbowl with 4 picks. The New York media will turn on him quicker than Jessica can bleach her hair.
Posted by Raz @ 1:14 PM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
Yeah, definitely Romo. Eli is making plays to drive the buss.
Romo, however, can CARRY his team. Eli has been playing well, but I'd like to see Eli single-handedly bring his team to a victory in clutch situations, like Romo has over and over again. Eli has just done enough to give his defense a chance to win for them.
Plus, the statistics between the two are not even close, even in the game where Romo lost to Eli's Giants.
Romo hands down.
Posted by KsDalFan @ 1:15 PM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
AAAAARGHHHHHHH. Where do you people come from? Did any of you watch the game? Tony threw 2 bad passes in that game, and if the recievers had done what they were paid to he wouldn't have thrown those two. The difference between Tony and Eli is that Eli's team won and Tony's team lost. The opperative word being "team". I just can't understand why everyone is sucking on Eli's jock for not losing. If I had to compare the two to former qb's from the same team it would go like this. Tony = Staubach, and Eli = Simms. Simms was never a great qb, he just knew how not to lose the games for them. If it weren't for dominant defense, and a lot of opposing team mistakes NY would never make it out of the season, let alone to the Super Bowl.
5th try. In honor of A Cast

Absolutely #9 - let's remember this was his first full season on the job. Although I must say I'd much rather be going to Phx instead of Hawaii.

Somebody noted above that Crayton stopped on his way to the endzone. I'll add Fasano's drop and Craytons earlier drop. Eli didn't outplay Romo; the Giant receivers outplayed ours, as did their offensive line. I'm sure there are people who would take Manning over Romo, but if it were put to a vote nationwide, it would be a landslide victory for Romo. He's more talented, is more elusive, and has charisma and a love for the game. He's put a new face on this organization.

Manning without a doubt! Romo wants to be a movie star.
Posted by Timbo @ 1:42 PM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
Anyone who chooses Eli Manning over Romo at this point in their careers really isn't watching the same games I've seen. Romo has proven he can win when the rest of the team isn't "on." Eli has proven his team can win when he isn't "on" and not much else. I'll take Romo any day, given what both have done so far.

2.) who has handled the pressuer of this postseaon better
3.) Who is not a tabloid quarterback

Posted by giant johnny @ 2:06 PM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
how come you guys are talking about all the drops against the Giants, but you fail to recognize all the drops the Giants have had this year and in the Green Bay game that surely would have padded Eli's statistics. He's doing more than manage the game. I've been Eli's harshest critic, but since Shockey went down he has taken control of this offense. He outplayed Favre in brutally cold conditions. You can choose Romo, I might.....might as well, but give Eli his due, he's making great throws. Also, nobody has taken more heat, granted comes with how the draft played out, but I feel he finally has turned the corner. Bottom line is the question is moot for next couple of years until Romo wins his first playoff game.,

Posted by Vaquero @ 3:16 PM Wed, Jan 23, 2008
Well lets see, which QB threw his way down the field for a TD in 44 seconds to tie the game before the quarter? That doesn't sound like just managing the game to me. Now lets see, which QB couldn't pull it off despite getting the ball twice in great field position at the end of the 4th quarter. The Giants led the league in dropped passes, that's no excuse for losing. Romo can't win a big game, doesn't have the competitive spirit and the fire in his belly. That's what his goofy laughing during the game tells you. Do you see Brady or any of the Mannings doing that?

You have to be kidding me. Romo chokes when it counts. This is the second year in a row he has blown it in the playoffs. His trip to Mexico was ill advised, while his counterpart - the individual you are dissing, was studying and peparing.
Romo also has more pro-bowl talent on his team. He SHOULD do better.
I will take the guy who works harder, focuses and keeps his mind on the golden key - rather than the playboy.
You can keep Romo, I am more than happy with Eli playing for the Giants. I will take the opportunity to play in the Superbowl any day over having great regular seasons and never going anywhere in the post season.

ROMO. Remember that even Rex Grossman made the superbowl last year. Eli is this year's Rex.

Despite everything that has gone down in the past month and a half, I would still take Romo over Eli. Eli is proving to be good, but I think it's more important for him to have the supporting cast there playing at the top of their game (which they are), whereas Romo is more of a natural leader who elevates the play of everyone around him. He can make plays out of nothing and get his team out of jams in a way i don't think Eli has the talent to. To me, Eli still doesn't seem like the leader of that team, but is a good cog in the machine along for the ride.

It wasn't all Romos fault they lost, I'll say it for the 20th time. Smashmouth football. Thats what the giants ended the season with and thats why they are were they are, and cowboys fans are jealous. Suck it up. The better team won in Seattle, Dallas, and Greenbay

I'll take Eli. Romo showed down the stretch why he wasn't drafted. The guy is a head case. I have no faith in him until he wins a playoff game...period. Until he does, he is Jeff George. I don't really want Eli either, but if I was forced to choose right now I'd pick the guy that beat his brother to a playoff victory over the 27 year old that is 0-2.

1. You won't even make it to the playoffs next year mark my words your entire coaching staff is in Miami your Kaput.
2. Romo made so many bad plays it was rediculous
3. This season of yours is PURE luck how many 3,4 INT's has this guy had this yr alone?
4. the entire team is overrated hence the short post seasons.
5. Eli has continuously shown improvement and if not for mid-season injuries he would have been in the SB a long time ago.
6. New money makes ppl into fools I think JJ should have waited b4 giving the dough.
Anyway as I get ready for the biggest upset in SB history. I think of how we got here it came with some TEARS along the way (T.O, lol)and early retirment (Bret come back Bret) and the the greatest (Patriots) How else R you to get respect but to beat the best and sometimes we CAN MAKE THEM CRY HAHAHAHAHAHA

As a Giants Fan, I don't think Romo is a bad QB. But after this season, Dallas Fan's would be crazy not to prefer Eli. Romo is not doing anything Eli hasn't already done. In the end, what do stats mean. What matters is taking your team to the playoffs. Eli has done that.
Eli is leading his teams to victories and has outplayed all three opposing QB he has faced in the playoffs, included the previously mentioned Romo. In the Dallas game, Eli did what Romo could not. Move the Ball, Move the Chains and allow his team to score more points than the other team. How is that not outplaying someone?
Posted by tdawg @ 2:30 AM Thu, Jan 24, 2008
ROMO.
Eli has the worst body language and leadership skills I have ever seen out of a NFL Quarterback.
The giants got lucky in Dallas this year, so all this talk about Eli outplaying him is bull.
Basically it still came down to the last drive in which we were screwed by a call costing us a down, driving, with momentum and a bogus grounding call when the QB wasnt even under pressure WTH?!
I would take Romo over Eli because he isn't the arrogant player that forced San Diego to trade him on draft day (what a joke).
I feel sorry for NY fans that inherited this sorry excuse for a QB. Eli is going to be exposed in the Superbowl for what he is.
Posted by Dave @ 7:46 AM Thu, Jan 24, 2008
tdawg, you have to be kidding me.
Body language - who the heck cares about that. Does body language win you games.
Giants Lucky - again, whine, whine whine... NY beat Dallas, Green Bay, TB - that is more than just luck.
Don't feel sorry for us NY fans. We don't need it. I will be partying it up watching OUR team in the superbowl!
What is with all of you? Call this for what it is. The better team advanced. Period. All of the pro-bowlers doesn't mean squat if you don't win in January. Quit making excuses, like "Basically it still came down to the last drive in which we were screwed by a call costing us a down, driving, with momentum and a bogus grounding.." and deal with it. You lost.

I have been a Dallas Fan for more years than I care to admit. That's the basis for my Romo / Danny White comparisons. I don't understand the comments about Romo raising the play of the people around him. Didn't he have 12 or 13 pro bowlers on his team? How many did Eli have? Who is going to the Super Bowl? It was a tell/tell sign when Tony was yelling at this linemen during the game while they were merely blowing him off. I will say it again: Romo has lost this team. I know it'll never happen, but we need to be looking for the next Staubach / Aikman.

Eli or Romo.....Eli has paid his dues with that NY press...the best thing to have happend to the Giants was for Tiki Barbar to retire ..he was cancer..our defense makes a few plays in the first quarter and Eli folds like a cheap suit..but we didnt and he didnt..our guy hasnt looked good in any playoff game..which is a very BIG concern..but in the end I will take our guy...maybe the third time in the playoffs is the charm...

Sandy,
It's not just about Romo, it's the Team. With some new defensive assistants familiar with Wades 3-4 coming in and a CB(Pacman) and a speed WR(Williams)who can catch(not like Crayton)via free agency or draft, we will make the most of this third time.

Romo from what I've seen can't handle big pressure situations.
Eli > Romo

I'm sure if you ask Romo what he would rather have, Pro Bowl or Super Bowl, he would choose Super Bowl. Pro Bowls mean squat, it is a popularity contest.

I love how all these blow hard message boards go dead silent when it becomes obvious everything they said is a humongous pile of manure. Hope you enjoy that pro bowl ring......oh wait..never mind

Well if you guys watched any of the pregame shows before the superbowl . Yours truly Jason Witten said " Eli Manning manages the game better than anyone in the game ." Now I am not saying that but you tight end did , even after he went on vacation with your QB . The Cowboys problem is T.O. he is a cancer to any team .
