Since Albert seems it would be in the Cowboys' best interests to name Flozell Adams the franchise player, I thought I'd take another look at the franchise tag. How about naming Ken Hamlin the franchise player? It would cost the Cowboys half as much $4.396 million) to tag Hamlin than it would be to tag Adams ($9 million). And if they were to give Adams the franchise tag, then that would eat up just about all of their remaining cap room. Then the team would have to re-work a ton of contracts to come up with more room to sign free agents. Hamlin just played in his first Pro Bowl after picking off a career-high five passes and generally serving as the quarterback of the secondary. He brought a much needed sense of calm to the secondary in terms of getting everybody lined up correctly. Thoughts? |

I usually like your stuff Archer, but this seems a little too far-fetched.
Much of the reason Hamlin signed with the Cowboys, aside from our lack of depth at safety, was because the Cowboys already showed a history of rewarding players who play great on one-yr contracts (Gurode).
As players hate the franchise tag, I believe Hamlin and his agent (the same as Gurode's) would feel betrayed by the Cowboys and it would ruin Hamlin's currently sky high morale.
Posted by Money Shot @ 3:20 PM Mon, Feb 11, 2008
Considering the team has more depth at tackle than safety I would concur. I think Pat Watkins would be able to step in for Hamlin in 2009.
If Flo is not willing to sign for a team friendly contract then we should pursue let McQuistan or Marten battle it out. OR...How much would a tackle like Jordan Gross command in the free agent market? With Gross you get a solid tackle who becomes great under Hudson Hauck and Romo and Barber...yes, Romo and Barber make the linemen on this team better.
Posted by Sean @ 3:22 PM Mon, Feb 11, 2008
Disagree Joshua. I think Hamlin and his agent know the way the game works. They would understand the franchise tag was simply used to lock him up while the two sides worked on a long-term deal.
I like Flozell, but at his price you have to let him go and trust your draft. You have three tackles waiting for their shot, while we have NO depth at safety. Give McQuistan first crack at the job then go to Marten or Free.
You have to pick and choose who you spend your money on and because of the lack of safety depth, Hamlin is the choice.

didn't Hamlin get the "stop sign tag©" applied to his noggin several years ago outside a bar in Seattle?...HA HA HA©...Hail to the Redskins©!!!...
Posted by whip @ 3:40 PM Mon, Feb 11, 2008
I would still franchise Flo. I think if they don't keep him, the offense will really struggle. Wade might panic and move Bigg Davis to tackle and then we're weak at 2 positions.
Also, just saw that Trent Green was cut in Miami's D-Day. Might be a better backup than Brad.
Posted by Joshua @ 3:40 PM Mon, Feb 11, 2008
I'm sorry, but none of us know Flo's price. According to both sources, the two sides haven't even talked. The only thing I've read is that Flo wants to stay so nobody outside of Flo and his agent knows how much it will take to keep him.
As for franchising Hamlin, he is the precise type of player you would want to sign long term. He just played a pro bowl season. He's a valuable veteran, but not too old to be worried. He's a team leader and "QB in the secondary."
Leadership and value from a player are things that are most easily affected when a player isn't happy with his situation and has low morale.
Franchise tag is bad news anyway. The Cowboys have had a good practice of no franchise tags, and they should try to continue that streak.

I'd prefer to get him to a long term deal but if worst comes to worst I think this would please everyone.

hey redsins rule. Nice safeties- Doughty? Laron "personal foul" Landry. You're an utter moron.
Posted by WilliamC @ 3:57 PM Mon, Feb 11, 2008
Simple solution:
(1) you let flozell go and trust one of the three young guys can do the job. You cant keep everyone,
you have to take some risks.
(2) You sign Hamlin to a 4 or 5 year deal with a big bonus up front but small salaries for 2008 and 2009. That way you get out a lot cheaper on the cap for 2008 than the 4.4 million it would cost to franchise him, and you know you are going to sign him long term anyway, so just do it.
Posted by Bill in DC @ 4:04 PM Mon, Feb 11, 2008
WilliamC,
Pile all the bonuses into 2010. Most likely this will be an 'uncapped' year because the owners may 'opt out' of the current CBA 2 years early (we'll know on Nov 8, 2008 because that's when it only takes 9 of them to terminate the CBA in 2010 instead of 2012).
Posted by Adam @ 4:09 PM Mon, Feb 11, 2008
Flo is awesome , but is way expensive. No franchise tag for that reason alone. If he wants to stay in Dallas, he will take a discount. Hamlin has been very impressive, and has earned a big contract. No deal yet for him, so I smell franchise tag. Hopefully he'll be smart and realize its only to lock him on our team to give us time to work out a nice contract.

Seems like Redskins Rule is related to Timmy Mac as she is always referring to him and whining to him anytime someone talks about her. She should pay attention to her own team a little more. The Redskins are 21 million over the cap, they are old on the o-line and d-line they have a fragile QB and a TE who looks like Wil Ferrell. They also have a head coach who has accomplished nothing as a coach and an owner who has owned the team for 10 years and is on his 6th coach. After writing all of that, now I understand why she spends so much time on a Cowboys Blog, obviously it is because she has nothing to look forward to rooting for her Deadskins. Ha Ha Ha. Timmy Mac tell your relative to keep smoking whatever it is she is smoking.

The window to get to the superbowl doesn't stay open very long, so we need to keep both, even if it means we stay quiet in free agency (There are no upgrades at those positions in FA). We just need to draft some talent in the secondary and some speed for our WR and RB positions.

The new coaches will have some say perhaps. If Campo can form a strong bond with Hamlin then you have to get 4-5 years setup. If not then you need to protect the Club from a long term deal. Hudson and Flo could work toward the best line we have had around here in a long time, or not. This chemistry between our new coaches and these players is critcal to the consideration of any player contract.
Posted by Charles - ATL @ 4:51 PM Mon, Feb 11, 2008
well said CowboysFanInNYC.....it's really that simple of an approach. And I think Jerry will try to make his splash mainly in the draft with the RB and WR....and maybe still make a smaller splash via a low-risk gamble on the knucklehead Pacman if he's reinstated.

Hamlin had a nice year and it would be great to keep him around but I honestly doubt that he is a consistent Pro Bowl caliber player. I would not franchise him.

Hamlin is younger and costs less. He should be priority one. Offer Adams a contract around 7 million for three years. If he takes it fine, if not let him move on.

why not sign the guy who rag dolled Hamlin down in that dark alley and then proceeded to play whack-a-mole on his melon with that Yield sign? That guy could at least play special teams, an area of need for you guys. Come to think of it, that guy should put that sign with Hamlin's head indention in the middle up for auction on Ebay. Doubtful. I think if they are at all hesitant about Free or McQuistan, they resign Flo.
The Panthers just released Mike Whale who is older but still one 'whale' of a guard (pun intended). He would give them the option of switching Davis to LT and letting Flo go. In any case, if h e can b had for reasonable dollars he would add some nice depth.
Well, okay, I'm pimping for Whale to some extent because he went to Navy, my alma mater. We don't have many players in the NFL.

If we are talking about trading up in the draft and possibly trading for the other Roy Williams, why not go after Chad Johnson instead. Mr Ocho Cinco himself?
Looks like little Danny Snider wants him a #1 WR. Dallas would be a perfect fit for Ocho Cinco.
Numerous league sources" tell the Washington Post that the Redskins are interested in trading for Chad Johnson.
Sources say...
Here we go. Two sources say Johnson is "eager" to get a new contract from the Redskins, confirming that Chad's main beef with the Bengals is about money. With a coaching staff almost fully in place, owner Dan Snyder's top priority is known to be acquiring a No. 1 receiver. While the Bengals aren't interested in moving Johnson currently, sources tell the Post that agent Drew Rosenhaus is actively working to broker a deal. It's believed the Bengals would ask for two second-round picks, or a late first and a third. Feb. 11 - 11:28 pm et

We could do better than that, how bout Spears and Carpenter for Ocho Cinco. We could work a deal, Cincy needs Def.?

It all depends on whether they can sign Hamlin to a long-term deal before they have to designate a franchise player. If they can, then they need to, and still reserve the tag for Adams. But if not, I agree that Hamlin is more valuable to the team than Adams, and should be given the franchise tag if a contract cannot be worked out with either player.
Posted by Trey @ 8:41 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008
It's just a fact that no player wants the franchise tag, so anyone who thinks Hamlin or Flo would be motivated if they get slapped with it... is DEAD WRONG. Every player knows that if they get slapped with the franchise tag, and then have a career ending injury... they will never get the big pay day they worked so hard for.
We do need to work out a long term deal with Hamlin. I wouldn't mind working out a deal with Flo, if the money and years of the contract is right.
As for the cap... just a thought... I really like Roy Williams the person, but I am not impressed with RW the player. Either move him to a nickel LB or cut the guy, he is a liability. Then package Bobby Carpenter, Marcus Spears, and Anthony Fasano to Miami (they are all BP guys), and a 6th round pick to Miami for their 2nd round pick. I think that Curtis can step in for Fasano now. It is apparent that Wade doesn't like Bobby, however in BP's last game against Seattle, Bobby played like a mad man. He was all over the field and I'm sure BP will remember that. Marcus will help BP switch that team to his style.
Those moves will help out a little with cap space and net us another first day pick. Then in the first round, we draft the best two CB's that come to us. Hopefully, two of these players fall to us at those picks (Jenkins, Rogers-Cromartie, McKelvin, Tribble, Talib). That will help us address the CB position and allow Henry to make the switch to safety to replace Roy. Then with the second round pick we get from the Dolphins, we draft Quentin Groves (DE from Auburn) to replace Marcus in the rotation. With our second and third we can draft the RB and WR our offense needs. This draft is deep at RB, and WR's can be had throughout the draft (for example Patrick Crayton and Marques Colston were late round picks), or pick up Javon Walker, or Benard Berrian in free agency.
Just a thought !!!

LET FLO GO! Flozell has been over rated for years. Don't spend the money on him and use one of the 1st round picks on a tackle.
Posted by Jason @ 12:27 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008
Can we officially retire the, "...Then package Bobby Carpenter, Marcus Spears, and Anthony Fasano to Miami" conversation. Bill knows he missed on those picks, so why the hell would he want those guys? He's trying to improve the Dolphins, not the Cowboys!?
I the idea: "Hudson Houck coached the Dolphins O-Line last year and today the cut OT LJ Shelton. Could the Cowboys sign Shelton, let Flo go and use Shelton as insurance in case Free or Mcquistan do not work out?"
Sounds reasonable? If Flo won't sign a team friendly deal than I think you have to have faith in starting your bench players. The current NFL with salary cap and parity means you cannot over pay a guy or you really put your team in a hole.
P.S. Captcha is the bastard child of Ram's fan and Redskin's fan...
Posted by 210 @ 12:37 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008
Wow he said quenton grooves can replace marcus spears in our defense. Did you forget we run a 3-4?? Groves is only 250 and an outside linebacker. I do agree with some of the things but with all that drafting makes the team too young. We are in postion to win now you can never predict how a rookie will do in thier first season. I like getting Bernard Berrian in free agency. We keep dependable players like Hamlin, Barber,Flo, and Fasano, add proven players in free agency (florence/Gay,berrian) then draft players who can contribute but dont have to immediately start.
If WR is taken care of in free agency it would make our draft so much more flexible. We can get RB AND CB in round one and maybe in rd2 we can go DT or ILB or if JJ wants Mcfadden. He can work something out hopefully trading (spears, carp) would be involved. CB is deep and DT is solid.Okam's stock is falling. Who knows what can happen this draft is really talented.
Posted by Lee Smith @ 12:52 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008
The market price for Flozell will be too high for an ageing, pretty good but flawed player who consistently leads the team in penalties. The Cowboys could tag him as transitional, and offer him about 2 million less than franchise LOTs. Safeties are cheaper, so no tag will be needed to sign Hamlin long term. However, the ultimate puzzle is SS Roy Wms. His salary will be nearly 7 million, far too much for a Safety who plays only on 1st downs and short yardage, because he can't cover receivers. But to cut him is to incur a cap hit of about 4 million. I'd cut him because he stopped improving and began regressing three years ago.
Posted by CowboysFanInNYC @ 5:28 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008
For all of you who don't think we should keep Flo':
Would you feel comfortable with McQuistan or Free or anybody other than Flo' on this team going up against the likes of Osi or the Eagle's pass rush twice a year? Yes, Flo' was a problem with the penalties, but the benefits of keeping Tony off his back far outweigh those things.
Posted by Willy Henderson @ 11:19 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008
I'm with 210 and CowboysFan InNYC,
We have the core for a championship run. We need Flo, with all of his false starts is still one of the best in the league and I DO NOT want to risk not having him
protecting Tony's blind side next year. Get CB and backup RB thruogh the draft.
