I don't feel the same way about Paul Zimmerman that Timmy Tabloid does, in all his short-mindedness. But MacMahon's theory on Dr. Z being anti-Cowboy gained some more steam today. Unless, you consider Troy Aikman anti-Cowboy, and I know some of you do. In his annual ranking on broadcasters at SI.com, Z takes the Dallas icon to task, giving the Aikman-Buck tandem a 2-star (out of 5) rating. Here's his take on Troy: Neither Buck nor Aikman is concerned with telling you much about defense, who made the tackle, who forced the play, etc., and the production style is to get off a play so quickly that you can't even see the uniform numbers of the people involved. Thus, it is always with a sinking heart that I approach a game this team is working, if I happen to be especially interested in it. |

If you read Dr. Z's column rating the various Super Bowls, his disdain for the Cowboys is very clear. Speaking of SB13 against the Steelers, he wrote, "...this was the heyday of the America's Team arrogance and I wanted to see the Cowboys crushed not merely beaten." No wonder the Cowboys have so many players from that era which can't get into the Hall of Fame with a biased guy like Z voting.

I totally agree with Z on this one - as I do on 60% of what he says. And the really great thing about Z is that if you disagree with him, he doesn't insult you or call you an idiot.
Troy doesn't say anything meaningful. He never gives any insight or thoughts about the play calling or individual players. I would love for him to give his honest assessment of the players instead of just regurgitating what has been said in the media all week. You know he has more insights because, good gosh, he did win 3 Super Bowls and on occasion would chew out a teammate.
Moose is turning into the same now. He used to give opinions and insight, but not anymore. I think both of them are more concerned with a long career in broadcasting more than being insightful and giving opinions.

Dr. Z is great if you like 1960's football. Time to move on old fart...

My big problem with Troy Aikman, the media figure, is his willingness to downplay the 90's dynasty as opposed to lauding it as a remarkable run. Aikman and Buck called the Patriots-Eagles Super Bowl and after the game, Aikman stated that the Patriots winning 3 Super Bowls in 4 years was a more impressive feat than the Cowboys winning 3 in 4 years. Yeah, winning 3 Super Bowls by a combined 9 points is pretty impressive, Troy. In addition, when confronted several weeks ago with Bill Parcell's predicting a 31-20 victory by the 2007 Patriots over the 1992 Cowboys, Aikman simply stated that Parcell's analysis was legitimate. It would have been nice if Aikman stated what he really felt and told the interviewer that the 1992 Cowboys would have kicked their a@#.

Aikman is a corporate voice. If he is calling a game, I'll turn on the radio call. Troy is very weak. Too bad he was a good QB
Posted by Mark R @ 9:02 PM Thu, Feb 07, 2008
Gosh! He's right! Troy really is a nice guy.

Oh, Eek. He downgrades Aikman and that's a sign of anti-Cowboy bias? Get a grip.

Zimmerman is an idiot.
Posted by Larry C @ 9:11 PM Thu, Feb 07, 2008
He is way off base on this one. That is the problem with multiple comentators calling the games. The all think they have to talk non-stop and show a replay of every play from 14 different angles and then each give his "expert opinion" on why the play didn't work, what the official should or should not have done, what the coach should have done and on and on. It is tiring to listen to all of the washed up experts.

are we supposed to care about broadcasters..especially you albert. Hello dr z is a broadcaster, not a coach or player......WHO CARES....DO WE? NOOOOOOOO. Hey albert, while your sucking maple from a suckling in your backyard, next to the belecheat shrine you have there (you really should answer your neighbors calls by the way), do something responsible, and pick up some trash along I-95 with some of your aquaintances......jerk
Posted by KY @ 9:57 PM Thu, Feb 07, 2008
Dr. Z is a leftist nut who thinks he's smarter than he actually is...he also should visit a dentist instead of writing poor articles about the NFL.
The fact he put Bryant Gumbel decently high on that list shows he's a nutjob.
Posted by Suck It NE @ 9:59 PM Thu, Feb 07, 2008
Hey Albert, perhaps you should write about how true Dynasties don't lose Super Bowls.
Good times.
Posted by Wil @ 9:59 PM Thu, Feb 07, 2008
Wow it must be the offseason, debating SI columnists! Dr Z is essentially the Dr Nick Riviera of football writers. Except people actually find Dr Nick entertaining and basically more informative than Dr Z.
Posted by Scott @ 10:03 PM Thu, Feb 07, 2008
We have a magazine writer who is supposed to be writing about sports instead writing about television broadcasters who cover sports. Why outside of media circles would anyone care about this?
Posted by Rick @ 10:16 PM Thu, Feb 07, 2008
All this coming from Dr Z, and he has the gall to give Bryant Gumbal a 3 star rating when he can't even call the players by their right name (see the Cowboys game on NFL Network). Give me a break. Flush the article for what it is, and let's move on.

if you have not read Dr. Z or "get" Dr. Z you probably shouldn't comment on this...he's a writer of great humility who has been through many NFL wars and he doesn't take himself too seriously...again...if any of you chuckleheads should ever be so fortunate as to talk to a person at the top of their profession, no matter the profession, ask good questions and then just listen because then you may learn something...Dr. Z is old school re ranking broadcasters...he wants to know down and distance and all substitutions...he wants to know starting line-ups...basically he wants the facts as to who is out there and when...if any of you morons have ever watched a football game on TV you would see that the field is bias to the QB and its hard to tell who is all playing for the defense...that's what he wants to know...and that's how he grades this...and he is totally right re Troy...having been a long time UCLA fan and getting a good feel for Troy, he apparently has a very dry and caustic sense of humor...he was the one that nicknamed Garrett the "Red Ball Express"...but this Troy does not show up in the corporate buttoned down broadcast booth of the #1 announcing team for Fox...that Troy is much more non-controversial...its a shame really that that sense of humor along with Troy's working knowledge of the game is not combined and communicated...another former UCLA star [BB] Don Maclean, who is now broadcasting, has a very similar delivery and sense of humor as Troy but combines it on the air and it is so funny and enjoyable...I wish Troy would just be himself on the air...
Posted by Henry @ 10:48 PM Thu, Feb 07, 2008
"Z" married a much younger woman and is super defensive about it in his columns, ie; "The Redhead" says this, does that, etc...trying to move her up a few notches, intellectually, so we don't think he is a sad old man.
"Z" was a force in his heyday, but, time to move on, Paul.
Posted by chris @ 10:58 PM Thu, Feb 07, 2008
It is a shame that Rick Gosselin and Norm Hitzges stand up for the 90's dynasty more than Aikman does, Troy was the catalyst for those teams and I would hope that he really feels that they could have handled the Patriots.
The Patriots linebacking crew ages 39, 35, and 33 could they have realy held up against the Cowboys offensive line, which by the way could have arguable been the best ever.(o-line)

KY,
Exactly, any broadcast team with Bryant Gumball on it should not receive more than 1/10th of a star and that's just because he can fog up a mirror.

whomever my guardian angel is on this blog I'd really like to get to know you LOL!!!...we seem to have similar thoughts [although its entirely possible you have thrown me under the bus under a different pseudonym LOL!!!]...I wanted to go after BIDC but thought about it and apparently so did you [him posting that he was an ex-Marine/possible Vietnam Veteran and all]...who knows if that is true on this blog LOL!!!...anyways...I will send Timmy Mac an OK re exchanging email addresses and depending on how you feel do the same if you feel the same way...and then we can lie in a bed of Rose Petals together LOL!!!...

Troy Aikman does a GREAT job! He was a talented quarterback back when he was playing and he separates that from his broadcasting. Who wants to listen to some self centered announcer always talking about their glory days? Leave him alone.
Posted by Hap @ 8:15 AM Fri, Feb 08, 2008
And Al enjoys pointing out that someone other than himself is anti-Cowboy. "Look, the pot's calling the kettle "black"". Both of you denounce The Cowboys, Al, albeit for different reasons. Z's jealous, what's your excuse ?

No stars for Joe Buck. First thing out of his mouth was to proclaim the *Cheetahs the best team ever and crown them as the Superbowl winner before the game had even started. Too bad Aikman has to be stuck with such a moron.
FOX promo's for American Idol were relentless, tasteless and classless. Combined with Joe Buck, FOX should not be allowed to broad cast any football games next year
Negative infinity stars for Bryan Gumbel. DR Z must not watch NFL network; Bryan Dumbell is the absolute Worst Sport Announcer Ever. No stars for DR Zero either.
Posted by JJGM (not!) @ 8:47 AM Fri, Feb 08, 2008
Patriots are no dynasty.
1) Dynasties don't lose Super Bowls.
2) Dynasties occasionally win one by more than 3 points.
3) Dynasties dominate their playoff opponenets
4) Dynasties don't need practice tapes of the opposition to win by 3 points.
The 1992-1993 team would have wiped the floor with the Pats ..... as they did every other team in the Playoffs and SB during that run. Emmitt would have gotten 140. Aikman 290. Irvin 120. Novachek 80. No turnovers. 35 points.
Fact is without CHEATING who knows how many of those probability-bending close wins they would have gotten. Maybe they lose 1 or 2 without the taping operations of practices.
Patriots 18*-1. 3* Super Bowls.

Dr. Zzzzzzzzz.......
Aikman is okay, but has speech habits. Daryl Johnston is the best analyst out there.
Posted by Chris @ 9:11 AM Fri, Feb 08, 2008
Ok i kinda agree a lil with what he says, but 3 stars to the NFL network crew? huh!! Throw out Bryant Gumbel and well maybe but you add him to the mix and theirs no way that is 3 star worthy.
Posted by DatMel @ 9:14 AM Fri, Feb 08, 2008
Dr. Z is one of the very few people to pick the Giants to win the Super Bowl so you have to give him some credit.
As for Troy, come on! The guy won you guys multiple Super Bowls while taking concussion after concussion. Whenever we Giants fans listen to him call Giants Cowboys games we get on our blog and curse him off for being a Cowboys cheerleader. Simms did far less for us and he can do no wrong in our book. Cut the guy some slack. There's Staubach, Meredith and Aikman and there's no doubt he belongs in that category. I would be shocked if Romo achieves half of what Troy achieved.

dr z is a douche, retire you old fart
Posted by Dan @ 11:51 AM Fri, Feb 08, 2008
The sound goes to mute when Troy and Joe "announce". This keeps the anxiety level much lower than when listening to their droning. They are poster boys for the obvious instead of focusing on the game and giving some insight. Simms doesn't have the best delivery but he does analyze the game much like Joe Morgan does for baseball.
Moose is also a very good analyst. Bryan Goofbel is ridiculous; he must have a great agent to be able to keep him in the business this long. Let's get Merlin Olsen back!

Did anybody see Joe "Midnight Cowboy" Buck on Conan O'Brien last year during the baseball playoffs?
He said that friends would text him words during the game and the challenge was for him to somehow work the word into the broadcast.
I wonder if Jack regretted naming his son Joe when "Midnight Cowboy" came out considering it was rated "X" at the time.
Today it would be rated "G".
OH NO, now I'm starting to sound like I went to the Timmy Tabloid school of Cowboys blogging by mentioning this worthless info.
Posted by Redskins_Rule @ 1:43 PM Fri, Feb 08, 2008
speaking of Midnight Cowboy...probably not much of a stretch seeing Breer play Hoffman's character "Ratso Rizzo" in the remake...HA HA HA...
Posted by tlinn @ 2:25 PM Fri, Feb 08, 2008
In reading through these comments, it seems like quite a few posters don't read Dr. Z on a regular basis. He's not anti-Cowboy. In fact, he has been the loudest voice on the HOF committee for alot of the '70's 'Boys who've been omitted from the HOF. He championed Bob Hayes and actually resigned from the seniors committee when Hayes was passed over. He's currently advocating for Cliff Harris.
Not everyone may like Dr Z's writing style or agree with his opinions but if you read him regularly you would realize that he has no anti-Cowboy agenda.
Posted by 22 @ 6:08 PM Fri, Feb 08, 2008
tlinn is 100% correct. Dr. Z is not anti-Cowboys. He has been an advocate for getting more Cowboys into the HOF, for example Rayfield Wright.
