Fassel right about blog power

JOHN F. RHODES / DMN

Unlike Massachusetts native Albert "Einstein" Breer, I'm not thin-skinned, so my feathers aren't ruffled by Jim Fassel's accusations that bloggers cost him the Redskins gig.

Plus, I know that Fassel is right. Bloggers have a whole lot of pull in NFL coaching searches. Look no further than this here blog for proof.

I was on the Wade Phillips bandwagon from the get-go. Jerry held hands with old pal Norv Turner at the Hall of Fame, but he hired Bum's boy based primarily on my advice.

Now, Coach Wade critics might point out that Turner's Chargers played in a conference championship game while the Cowboys had the weekend off. But the Cowboys were the clearly surperior team. Just look at the winning percentages -- Cowboys (13-4, .765); Chargers (13-6, .684).

Let's hope he listens to us once again and doesn't trade up for McFadden.

Troy,

It's refreshing to hear a sane poster on this blog.

I have my moments of brief sanity.

Jerry would no more listen to a blogger or a group of bloggers. He thinks he's smarter than everyone.
As I've stated Jerry will do something stupid in the draft...

Look at the Giants there draft last year.. EXCELLENT! Everyone made the team and everyone had something to do with winning the SB!

Look at our drafts over the last 5 years... hardly anyone from those drafts didn't even make the team!
Wasted drafts! Wasted time! Wasted money!

Jerry won't let us down he'll do something stupid as he always does... just watch and see.

Stop dreamin'....blogs don't have **** to do with any decision making in the NFL. Famous quote: Listen to the fans and you'll soon be sitting with them in the stands.

Thanks John!!! I thought I was the only diehard Cowboy fan who thinks the Cowboys can't draft a lick. They chose Skyler Green over Devon Hester. Not only was the selection bad, kick returner was not the top priority. Then the TE pick on Fasano "The Fonz" when we needed linemen and DB's. JJ's, Parcells, and the rest of the pitifull draft guys state that the guy was the best guy available on their draft board. Well....How about NEED. Do they factor that in? And please do not get me started on Jacob Rogers and the rest. Then JJ likes to trade down for more picks. Another stupid decision. He chooses quantity over quality. Most of these guys never even make the team, or simply aren't that good. J. Reeves for example. And lastly, we drafted an injured player (Stanback) that could not make a difference. Why wait a year for a player to develop. There will be his types in next year draft. Draft for the year on the table.

Dallas rulz,

Dallas tried drafting for need, but the tendency, when you draft for need, is to reach (see Kavika Pittman, Shante Carver, David La Fluer). Overall the best policy is to take the best player in the first 2-3 rounds. After that you can reach for need.

The draft is an iffy thing, if everyone knew how good Hester was going to be, do you think he would have lasted til the 4th round? Would Tony Romo have gone undrafted if everyone knew he was going to be this good? Would Joe Montana lasted til the 3rd round, Tom Brady til the 6th? Johnny Unitas til the 17th? The draft is a crap shoot in many respects, if you look at all the 'drafting' geniuses, you'll see they miss as often as they hit or even more so.

Looking at Parcells drafts I'd venture that the pick of Rob Carpenter was a 'need' pick and a 'reach'. Dallas 'needed' a LB to take Ellis place, so Dallas took him instead of the best player available, look what it got us.

The Cowboys have made some mistakes the last several years, but overall drafted well.

1. Skyler Green was in the 4th round and Hester the second. Yes, the cowboys could have selected him, but picking a kick returner that high is crazy. It is easy being a Monday morning qb.
2. J Reeves was a 7th round draft choice. Many of them don't even make good teams. J. Reeves has holes, but for his draft position was a good pick.
3. Already complaining about Stanback. First he was changing positions and most WR don't make a difference the first year anyway. The NFL is full of guys who did not play or were terrible the first year and became all pro's. Stanback has potential and next year will be a big year for him.
4. I read the blog consistently and Jerry Jones is a genius compared to what most post on here. I see stupid trades, free agent signings that are not affordable and dumb draft choices. The key to being good is drafting well, finding affordable free agents and good coaching. It is real easy to be critical of every team a year or two after the draft, why they selected one player over another.

If decisions were made based on what a majority of bloggers said, both Phillips and Roy Williams would be gone!!!!!

Cletus, very good point. I think it was Marv Levy who originally stated that.

I actually think that the Cowboys did pretty well in the draft last year. Spencer did fine filling in for Greg Ellis, Nick Folk made the Pro Bowl and Deon Anderson was a great contributor to special teams and was great at catching passes out of the backfield.

Stanback? Jury is still out. The cowboys felt that they were getting a good deal for his athletic ability in the fourth round.

As for the Free and Marten? We don't know, since they were behind an offensive line that (a) sent three people to the pro bowl and (b) rarely got injured.

Bottom line: the draft is a crap shoot. Jerry did a great job last year of drafting the "need" guy first, and then trading down and getting a bunch of guys in later rounds (which improves your odds of having a successful draft).

How can you say Stanback is a waste already? That WR the Saints picked in Round 1 (his name has slipped my mind) didn't even play a snap. And they drafted him when he was injured too. The reason Dallas drafted him is because A) Just look how old our starting receives are and B) They took him knowing he would be a project that could pay off down the road. By your guys logic Tony Romo should have been cut because he didn't play the first 3 seasons. By that I say thank god we have Jerry Jones instead of you guys running the team.
