The Cowboys are attempting to build an all-star defensive staff. According to a source, the team has talked with former Washington assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams about joining Wade Phillips' staff. The team is waiting for Dom Capers, who was offered a job after interviewing with the Cowboys last Tuesday, to make a decision on his status. The Cowboys have added Dave Campo (secondary) and Todd Grantham (defensive line) since losing Todd Bowles, Paul Pasqualoni and Kacy Rodgers to Miami. Should Capers and Williams come to the Cowboys, then the Cowboys would have three defensive assistants with head coaching experience (Capers, Williams and Campo) and four with coordinator experience (Capers, Williams, Campo, Grantham). Williams had been the NFL's highest-paid assistant coach with Washington, earning $2.6 million annually before Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones decided to pay offensive coordinator Jason Garrett about $3 million a year and adding the assistant head coach title. |

It sounds like the Cowboys' current DC (I forget his name) is out under any circumstance. Or, maybe he'll be sharing power.

I know that there are backs on the cards that Jerry is holding, but it's a good guess that Stewart will be gone.

Brian Stewart. Just how much is Gregg Williams going to cost, anyway?

BamBam, his name is Brian Stewart and he has buck teeth.
Todd Archer, I am calling your bluff. Do you really have a source or did you read that on Profootballtalk.com? If they are your source, I think you should have something more reliable. do some reporter work.

NOOOOOOO!!!!
This guy is the most polarizing coach in the NFL. His style of coaching is the exact opposite of Wade's. There's no way those two guys mesh well ... you also have to remember the Bills fired Wade to hire Williams as the new HC. There's no chance he's forgotten about that.
I'm going to be livid if we even interview this clown. Jerry ... stop this nonsense.

Why everyone is so high on keeping Brian Stewart in place is just a fan of mediocrity !
This would be the ultimate haul !!!!

Hey I thinks B.Cower would make a great special team coach, then we can have 8 former head coaches, AND AN OWNER THAT STILL CAN'T BUY A PLAYOFF WIN.
IF WE'RE GOING THIS ROUTE, JUST BRING BACK JIMMY!

Exactly what I am talking about, Jerry Jones is hiring defensive minds that will ensure that his players will be placed in the proper position by means of experience and scheme.
The fact that Jerry Jones is trying to bring in defensive coordinators with this high degree of NFL experience says, we were out coached this year especially on the defensive side of the ball and it is time for an upgrade on that side of the ball.
Gregg Williams in Washington lost his starting safety and best player on defense, a starting corner back, had one corner back hurt in and out of the lineup for the majority of the season as well as several defensive linemen who were in and out of the lineup and he still had the Washington Defense playing at a high level to where they ran the table and were able to get into the playoffs.
Not to mention, with and anemic offense.
You have some people who blog say we need upgrades at the CB positon, that is obvious, tell us someting that we don't now, however talent minus proper coaching is subject to futility and a 21-17 loss sending you home when you were the Top seed in the NFC.
Jerry Jones, I like were your head is at. Start with coacing and then add additional players needed to make a run next year.

As a 'Boys fan living in DC, I've had the chance to get my fill of 'Skins football for the past 20 years. IMO Williams is a top notch defensive coach, and would make a fantastic addition to the staff. Plus, it would really get under the 'Skins fan's skin (they hated to see him leave...check out the 'Skins blog on washingtonpost.com). :-)
4-3, 3-4, whatever. Yeah, it's a new scheme but the guy puts in players in position to make plays. Save for last year, the 'Skins D has been Top 10 every year he's been in DC. And the previous poster was right; that defense was littered with injuries this past year, but still carried that team to the playoffs. That's a direct reflection of the job that Williams did.
I say bring him on. We have invested so much in draft picks, free agency, and $$$ on the defensive side of the ball...we should be getting more out of it. GW would certainly be able to help out there.

Ditto what Mike wrote above. I also live in the DC area and was praying he wouldn't stay here. He may be an abrasive pr*ick, but his guys play hard for him and he can scheme his ass off. He can learn the 3-4. For this guy, Jerry needs to pull out the checkbook.
Two things:
1. He would whip R. Willey's fat ass into shape (or out) and
2. He would make sure the defense CRUSHES Washington every time we play them.

How'bout dem Cowboys fans from DC? We know a lil something about Gregg Williams and the high intensity his defense always plays with! Bring him on baby! Can we actually afford to wait another 5 years for Brian Stewart to develop, or should we capitalize on the talent we now have to make a realistic (not a mock one) run at the big one? We don't need chokers, we need smokers! And that is what Gregg Williams is: He makes you hurt for every yard! Jerry if you or anybody you know reads these blogs, Pay The Man and Bring him On! Wade or no Wade, with all those great coaches, we have a better shot of not getting outcoached by anybody again!

Williams built a very good defense in Washington with less than awesome talent (except in the secondary where he had some very talented players - well til one of them was murdered that is).

Attempt #2

Okay, here it is..!!! It's time for Jerry, to hire a big name on defense. ( Greg Williams )It appeared at times last year our defensive guys, were out of position everytime a big play or touchdown was allowed. Jason, has the offense covered we just need guys like Crayton, to shut up and catch the ball. As for the draft. Please do the following with your picks. 1) Draft Cornerback.
2)Trade the other number 1 pick to Detroit for Roy Williams. He's going to walk next year so at least they would get something for him.

Bill Parcells is gone. He's the one that atlked Jerry into switching defense. At the time I thought, "yeah, the 3-4 defenses are always pretty good but our 4-3 defense of 92,93 &95 was better".
Maybe Jerry is getting set up for ditching the 3-4 along with Wade if he fails to deliver next season. That would be prudent in my opinion. I like the thought of this starting 7.
Ellis, Spears, Ratliff, Canty
Spencer, Bradey, Ware
Carpenter, Hatcher and Tank would be backups
Tank, Fergy, Ayodele and Burnett can be trade bait and back ups depending on what offers come through.
