Ocho Cinco to the 'Skins?

9:08 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008 |
Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

The Washington Post reports that little Danny Snyder is up to his usual off-season tricks, chasing the biggest names that might be available. Big-mouth Bengals WR Chad Johnson tops the list.

Numerous league sources, including some with direct knowledge of conversations between Snyder, Cerrato and recent head coaching candidates, have affirmed that the Redskins have interest in trading for Cincinnati wide receiver Chad Johnson, with two league sources saying Johnson is eager to land a hefty new contract from Washington.

Acquiring an elite receiver is Snyder's top priority, league sources said. The Bengals have said they have no intention of trading Johnson, but his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is working quietly to broker a deal, the sources said.

Little Danny has this here blog's seal of approval to make a deal for Ocho Cinco. I don't know if acquiring often disruptive Johnson would help or harm the 'Skins, but Ocho Cinco vs. the Original 81 twice a year would be a blog gold mine.

Once again Jerry Jones sits and idol while the big game changers get scooped up. He wathched New England load up, and wonder we he can't win a Super Bowl. I still believe that his passing on Randy Moss on more than one occassion is a bad decision. I would like to see he and Owens on the field together, with Witten and another one of our better receivers.

Posted by prime @ 9:24 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

We cannot allow this. 85 is far too big time for us to handle twice a year.

Posted by Kokblock @ 9:32 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

F' that, we need to try and get him here, specially if the asking price is cheap, why not???

Posted by Joey @ 9:36 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

So, why is Cincy willing to take a $7-8 mil cap hit to let Johnson go? And how is Washington able to pull this off being $16 mil over the cap?

Posted by dan @ 9:42 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

"Once again Jerry Jones sits and idol while the big game changers get scooped up. He wathched New England load up" uh didnt new england lose the sb in the biggest choke in sports history?

Posted by WilliamC @ 9:56 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Once again, some ignorant dallas fans with very little knowledge of anything NFL use every item to criticize jerry jones because it makes them look like bit shotts(so they think)
Jerry is not siting on his hands, remember Hamlin and Bigg Davis from last year, and T.O. the previous year.

To use Dan Snyder as an example of how something should be done as an owner/GM is just incredibly uninformed. This guy has been an embarrassment to Washington and the washington fans will be the first to tell you that.

Snyder has already wrecked the coaching staff and now he probably will do the same with the roster.

Is Daniel Snyder trying to create a Dallas clone baby in DC? This guys must worship the ground Jerry walks. He just about tries to do everything Jerry does. Jerry went a got an old timer coach, Daniel Snyder went a got Gibbs. Jerry is gonna gamble the future with quaterback coach that had his first year as Off. Coordinator, but it is almost unwritten law that he will be the next Cowboys coach. Dan Snyder goes and gets a quaterback coach to become the Off. Coordinator before the coach is hired (just like Jerry did with Jason Garret)and now they make him the coach (grant it Dan Snyder beat Jerry to the punch on that one, but lil' danny knew Jerry was moving in that direction before he had even thought about hiring and ex QB coach and making him the Off. Coordinator). Now we'll move on to exhibit C, the big mouth, jabber mouth wide receiver. He will try to gamble on the receiver just like Jerry gambled on T.O. Oh and I almost forgot, not to mention mortgaging the future on an unproven QB, Jerry did it with Romo, Dan Snyder followed up with Jason Campbell. Dan Snyder probably wished that Jason Campbell went undrafted. I heard that this upcoming year the Deadskins or F*reskins as you may, they will be slowly phasing out the red and gold for silver and blue and changing the logo as well. This team will never have success as long as lil' Danny insists on following everything that papa Jerry does.

My God, how exactly is that going to work? The Bengals take an $8mil hit to trade Johnson, the Deadksins are currently $21 mil OVER the 08 cap (which they have to reach by midnight 28 Feb) NOT counting the 3-4 mil that they will have to reserve for draft picks. Actually this makes them 24-25 Mil OVER the cap atm. Can they get there? Sure, but it will leave them almost no money to make a huge contract for Johnson. They will most likely have to redo many deals, pushing more money into future years (which is why the Danny will be voting to end the CBA in 2010 come this november), cut Mark Brunell, Shawn Springs, and a few other needed vets. Then they think they can spend tons of money on Ocho?

The Danny is out of control. He went out of control the moment Joe Gibbs walked out the door. This makes me smile, alot.

Posted by RT @ 10:17 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Mike, I agree, he does seem to always copy Jerry, probably his biggest fan!!!

Posted by Chris/Denton @ 10:21 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Until "Little Danny" understands that you build a team through the draft with perhaps a F/A signing here and there, the Skins will never be a contender. No way they get the cap space anyway to sign him.

Posted by dallas fan @ 10:24 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Hey Dan,

You are correct, NE did not win the SB. That's not my point. My point is Ne's approach. You need to get some of these solid vets to be an ELITE team in the NFL. Dallas are only 2-4 players away. If we had 85, 81, Witten, and
Glen going down field on every play, Romo will have a field day. Your point is well taken though.

Posted by Lee Smith @ 10:33 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

I always thought Santana Moss was elite enough. He seemingly scored at will, and beat us several times.

Posted by Bill in DC @ 10:37 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

I think Moss is getting old, injury prone, and is no longer an 'elite' WR. At best he's a #2.

He certainly didn't 'score at will' last season. The only game he hurt us in was the 14-13 debacle two (three?) years ago.

Posted by Ranch Hand @ 10:38 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Can't believe that Deadskins_Fool hasn't weighed in on this yet...must be too busy running after Wade to jump up to yank his chain...or perhaps this rumor has him yankin' somethin' else.

Posted by letsgoto @ 10:45 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Who cares Chad Johnson is not that good anyway. So he was complaining having Carson Palmer throw him the ball and now he will be happy with Jason Cambell, please this is a disaster in the making. I say we focus in on Roy Williams (detroit) or jevon walker to compliment TO and co. F the skins that place is a mess the players lost the only coach they liked its a train wreck.

Posted by chris graham @ 10:51 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

chad wants 2 be t.o. so bad!!!!

Posted by Redskins_Rule @ 11:05 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

what does a rancher use to masturbate with?...thats right, his "Ranch Hand"©...I leave all internal Redskin workings to Bill in D.C...he's the Redskin expert [just ask him]...I posted several days ago that the salary cap was just puff pastry but all I got was guffaws...well its happening just as I told ya...and the real team in salary cap hell is the Cardinals [I can't believe Bill in D.C. was not on top of this]...so maybe look there for possibilities...HA HA HA©...Hail to the Redskins©!!!...

p.s. Bill in D.C....call me on my Doc Marten...

Hail to the Redskins©!!!...

Posted by scott @ 11:17 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Have you people ever heard of the term "Salary Cap"? We can't pickup every big free agent and resign all of our big players without conforming to the salary cap. Let Jerry do the big boy football decisions, and you guys keep to what you are good at and stuff the remote back into you under shorts.

CAPTCHA Code blows

Posted by Ryan @ 11:27 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

LMAO... I LOVE how Redskins_Rule always skirts around his owner's F Up's. It's like they never happen!!! The coaching hire, then endless washed up FA's, interviewing Williams about promoting him to head coach and then firing him??? LOL Your team/franchise is and has been a joke for the last 10-15 years. Anything you say about the Cowboys is just plain silly and uneducated. Your a freakin' Redskins fan!!!!!!! "HA HA HA" And an idiot one to boot...

uhhh...Dallas Fan...do you pay attention in the off season??? Just about every year Jerry has owned this team he has made financial comittments that would satisfy ANY fan. Do you think this is fantasy football and you can just sign anyone that is available. Come on. You are entitled to your own opinion but to act as if Jerry doesn't contstantly try to improve this team every year is crazy!!!! Yes he makes mistakes. I would rather him try than to sit on his money. See the 49'ers organization for an example if you aren't happy with how this one is run.

I don't expect everyone who post on here to really think about what they write, but come on. Don't believe everything that SportsCenter tells you. It's a slow time in the sports world right now.

Posted by Lawrence @ 11:29 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Aren't the 'skins like $20M over the cap this coming year? How could they afford an elite WR?

Posted by Ryan @ 11:33 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

They cant Lawrence. See my last post. ESPN is bored right now. They have to stir up something. :)

Posted by Mike @ 11:44 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Look at Chad's numbers, in an offense with Carson Palmer as his QB and good #2 AND #3 WR's...

93 catches, 1440 yards, 8 TD's. However, all of those TD's came in 4 games (7 of them against CLE, TEN, and MIA)...the other 12 he got shut out. Skewed production to say the least. Think he'll put those numbers up with Campbell, Moss, and Randle El (big downgrade from the guns in Cincy)?

Also, he's 30 years old...how many years does he have left? At least when they traded for Portis, they got a young player.

As for the cap stuff, Washington will get under the cap. They've already restructured Carter and Thomas, Cooley is next. Big deal. Think of how much room Johnson would suck up, though, not to mention the draft picks they'll waste (again).

I say let him go. Like Bill said, this move should make you smile...alot.

Posted by Tom Bradys Left Nut @ 11:47 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Bill in DC what kind of crack are you smoking... Are you and Marion Barry sharing the pipe? Moss just had one of the greatest years EVER for a WR and you just said he is a number 2 receiver..

REC 98 | YDS 1,493 | TD 23

put down the crack pipe and step away slowly...

Posted by Bill in DC @ 11:51 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Lawrence,

No. They are like 20 million over the cap. They 'restructured' the contracts of Randal El, Andre Carter, and Randy Thomas (pushing more money into future years). Plus they need to clear 2-3 million for draft picks (required to have this space by the NFL). So they are like 21-22 mil over. Odd that the sites I'm looking at don't show Mark Brunell in their count ups, last time I looked he had a 9 mil hit in 08. He's still on the roster and hasn't restructured so I don't know what to make of the salary sites omission (it's why they say the Deadskins are 'only' 13 mill over the cap atm).

How do they get to it from here?

Well, I'm not sure. I don't think they can get there by restructuring deals entirely. They probably will have to cut some older vets like Mark Brunell, Shawn Springs, and possibly even Portis.

I'm sure they'll use some slight of hand, mortgage your future, accounting moves to reach the cap + rookie pool by Feb 28.

To Me.. this is Just Fine.. Jerry needs to go and get ROY WILLIAMS.. not Ocho Cinco... because Roy is the Right fit and the Right weapon.. Guys.. did you see how Chad was constantly mad at Palmer.. Mad at the coach.. etc.. Chad Johnson is the new T.O. and his mouth just doesn't stop.. Sure we got away with it Once with T.O. and he is at Peace .. But can Jerry get away with it TWICE ?? it Took Deion Sanders, Michael Irvin, and many others to have T.O. Mature.. That won't happen with Chad.. No one can control him because he wants to be the Greatest Self Promoter of all time..

Jerry needs to get Roy Williams.. He is what is best for the future of the Cowboys.. and if he can also get Benard Berrian.. and trade away Crayton..

As for Washington.. with or without Chad Johnson they won't win.. will they have to get rid of Portis.. Randle El.. Springs.. and so many others.. they will be worse than Cincy and Chad will be miserable !!!

Posted by Bill in DC @ 11:54 AM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Tom,

Santana Moss, Washington Redskins, 808yds, 3 TDs

not Randy Moss, New England Patriots.

Now don't you feel silly?

Posted by Jim Burns @ 12:04 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

I would suggest to Mr. Snyder that he not do anything until he speaks with Bill in DC. Obviusly Bill can tell Mr. Snyder how to work with the cap since Bill has all that experience in the NFL.

hey Mensa Bill in D.C...I think Brady's Nut just got you on one of my favorite tricks...

"Now don't you feel silly?"

HA HA HA©...Hail to the Redskins©!!!...

Posted by Foreskins @ 12:18 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

i don't think johnson is going to go to the redskins, but i find snyder's ability to trade all his draft picks for older players that are over paid and not very good hilarious. i hope he continues to do what he does because i love watching the redskins suffer

Posted by KD_Kingpin @ 12:42 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

LOL - Dallas Fan... funny name since you obviously aren't one.

You are what we call Fantasy Football fans. You don't have any idea how things really work, think that any team can get any player they want and make idiotic statements like 'you have to make big splashes in order to win the SB'.

Tell me, oh wise one... how many big free agent splashes did the New York Giants make last offseason???

Posted by Bob @ 12:56 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Cowboys will trade one of their number ones and a #1 next year for Roy Williams. They will also sign Shaun Rogers after the Lions cut him. They'll sign a nickel corner, and resign everyone but Flo (you heard it here 1st). Hopefully Romo will stay healthy because they need a younger backup QB at some point. 1st and 2nd round picks will be CB and RB.

Posted by ryan @ 1:18 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

I like everything you're preaching Bob except for Rodgers. Unless they plan on moving Ratliff to end, could happen, we already have 3 solid DT's. Running a 3-4 you really only need 2 good ones. That would give us Ratliff, Tank, Rodgers, and Ferguson (provided they don't release him). I know depth is king but that roster spot could be used on something we lack depth in. Inside line backer. I just didnt see Akin do enough. I'd LOVE to see them pick up a stud ILB in FA. Other than that I'd love for your predictions to ring true. FELIX JONES, NOT McFadden!!!!

This just in, with Capers turning down the Boys offer Danny Snyder has decided to fire the great flying elephant and hire Capers as head coach. LOL@Redskins_Rule. What exactly do they rule?

Posted by Jrs2300 @ 1:58 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Ryan you are exactly right.. and I don't know why they would get Rogers anyway !! what has he done to help the Lions Run or Pass Defense.. he's like Spears.

I too want Felix Jones and not Mcfadden.. But Mayock on NFL Network said he feels Mcfadden will drop to past #20 ? is he crazy.. But if he does.. Then Dallas should get him...

Jerry.. it's simple..
- Get Roy Williams with one of the 1's send them Carpenter or Spears
- Get Drayton Florence He knows Wade system and he is a good #2 CB to keep Anthony Henry flexible.

- Draft Felix Jones - He is the perfect player behind Barber who looked faster in the Pro Bowl and he will be good for Kick Ret or Punt Ret..

- Get a New ILB to replace Akin Ayodele because he is a liability.

- Draft a Super Fast Corner in the 2nd or 3rd.. The guy from Auburn or Iowa who are 6'1 with 4.39 -45 speed

- If Salary Cap allows it.. Get Benard Berrian also..

Posted by Tyler @ 2:43 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Bob, I think the Cowboys should go out and get a guy like Roy Williams however they will not need too give up 2 first rd picks to get him. Now I would give up 1 first rd pick this year and 1 next year for a guy like Fitzgerald who to better than Williams, and if anyone watched the Pro Bowl it looked awfully good seeing Romo throw to Fitzgerald. If we keep both first round picks we go and get a CB & RB. Maybe Mckelvin & Mendanhall or Felix Jones (hopfully Mendanhall). And then in the 2nd rd get a guy like WR James Hardy, and then in later rds get a guy like Jordy Nelson or Adrian Arrington.

Posted by Bill @ 3:16 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Jerry, trade for Chad. Drafting wide receivers RARELY works out. Get the sure thing.

Posted by corey @ 3:25 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

please chad dont go to the deadskins. come be a star in Dallas

Posted by coachkencoop @ 3:34 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

chad or roy would go very well with our #81 i'm leaning towards roy b/c he's younger bigger and has ties with texas but either one would do

Posted by dennys valiente @ 5:29 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

chad is a big a** hole. i bet the bengals are going to have a great season in 08 and if chad goes to an other team he isnt going to be a star like he is for the bengals.plus no one cares about him he is getting old and t.j houshmandzadeh is going to be the star if chad goes and he will be salty. like when the giants went the superbowl a year after tiki retired. no one knows maybe the bengals go to the playoffs then the superbowl.

Posted by Jody @ 7:58 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008

Wsh won't sigh Ocho-no money. They are going to have to re-structure everybody to get under the cap as is. TO has been a model since he's been here, but we don't need two WR media stars. Say what you will about JJ, he's been through salary cap hell and has learned. Dallas is about as far under the cap as Wsh is over. JJ will keep the draft picks, sign some mid-range FA's [no Samuels, Trufant etc] and move on. If Dmac falls to 22, then he will be a Cowboy, but JJ doesn't sell the ranch for one guy.

Posted by Nethy @ 3:02 PM Wed, Feb 13, 2008

didnt see it anywhere for Jerry to be in the hunt for Chad Johnson....nfl live or otherwise
