Restricting your free agents

The Cowboys enter the off-season with five potentially restricted free agents. They are ...

RB Marion Barber
C/G Joe Berger
DE Chris Canty
LS L.P. Ladouceur
RB Tyson Thompson

The Cowboys have until Feb. 28 to place tender offers on those players. Doing so gives Dallas matching rights on each player, and compensation is based on the amount offered. Here are the four tiers of tenders:

$927,000 -- draft-level compensation
$1.47 million -- second-round pick
$2.017 million -- first-round pick
$2.562 million -- first- and third-round picks

Draft-level compensation is defined as a pick corresponding with where each player was originally drafted. That means the $927,000 tender would merit fourth-pick compensation for Barber and Canty, a sixth-round pick for Berger, and no compensation for Ladouceur or Thompson.

Chances are, Barber and Canty will be tendered at the highest level, effectively taking both off the market. If any of the other three are tendered, it would likely be at the lowest level. If they are not tendered, they become unrestricted free agents. Just so we're clear on that.

there's no way Wade would ever consent to letting a guy go with with the last name of "Berger" is there?...HA HA HA©...Hail to the Redskins©!!!...

p.s. I hear Wade is trying to talk Jack "Ham" back into playing...

You really think they'll offer Canty the highest level? He's a good player, but you can't max everyone out. No doubt we should lock Barber up at the max.

Wow, does Redskins_Rule think he is funny or what? And hail to the Redskins? Now that is funny, seeing as they went to the playoffs and all. They couldn't do it with the old master (the one that could always go to the Super Bowl in a strike year) so now they are to be hailed with a coach that has no experience at any top level?!?!?!

Put the high tender on Barber and Canty; those guys can really play. The rest haven't done anything worth tendering them an offer.

Howdy everyone? I wanted to take the time to say "hello" to all my fans, especially Redskins_Rule. How are you doing?

Hey Redskins Rule remember DC stands for Dallas Country

For those who don't remember when we lost Dale Hellestrae and had lackluster performers at deep snappers, you wouldn't be so quick to say don't tender Ladouceur. Hopefully we can get him signed to a multi-year deal before FA starts.

I'm also not so sure a team wouldn't be willing to pay a 1st (late round 1st) and 3rd for either Barber or Canty. Maybe not Canty, except that DE's are hard to find, but if you're a team that's done great in the playoffs and needs an RB, I would certainly pay a late 1st and 3rd for Barber.

i dont think anyone would give up a 1st and 3rd for Barber, even if they did...with the tender we have the chance to match any offer that team makes before the player actually is able to sign with someone else. Its really a win win. Either we get a probowl back at 2.5 mill which is a steal or we get a 1st and 3rd round pick if we choose not to match the offer presented to Barber.

L.P. Ladouceur signed a 5 year extension on 2/14. Where have you guys been?

My God some of these guys are disillusioned.
Redskins rule and Rams fan must be doing some serious drugs to be so misguided. I always knew DC was a drug haven (hello dexter Manley) , but I am surprised that St.Louis is so drug addled.
please can we limit the postings from these guys.
Anyone who'se owner lets go of Greg Williams for Jim Zorn..nothing against Zorn but last time he called a play wasn't he in the huddle?
And Rams fan- Talk about Steven Pjackson all you want all that matters is wins- and the Tony romo highlight reel against the Sheep alone was lovely
