Rumors on Carpenter and Spears

There were all sorts of rumors coming out of the Senior Bowl that Marcus Spears and Bobby Carpenter were on the trade block.

Well, Spears' agents thought that as well. They called the Cowboys during the Senior Bowl and asked was there any truth to the rumors.
Dallas, according to Spears' agents, said the defensive end is not going anywhere.

As for Carpenter, I remember Wade Phillips saying toward the end of the season that maybe he might have been a little too hard on the second-year man from Ohio State. Carpenter played poorly in the last preseason game at Minnesota. And that game was the basis to which Phillips and probalby the rest of the defensive staff viewed Carpenter.

Maybe Dallas gives Carpenter another chance to prove himself this season. For now, he's staying.

I for one would like to see what Carpenter can do on the field. We have no way to judge him right now. I have always thought he could be a player. If nothing else, based on the last game of the season a year ago.

I heard a rumor rhat the Parcells is trying to trade the #1 pick to his old buddy Romeo Crennel in Cleveland for Derek Anderson, quarterback.

Why not try himn as middle LB, he couldn't be any worse than Akin or Bradie?

Posted by Chris/Denton @ 11:01 AM Thu, Feb 14, 2008

Carpenter is actually listed as an ILB after the signing of Spencer. I also would like to see him in there instead of Adoyle.

Spears seems to be a pretty good run stopper but will he be satisfied as a role player and the salary that goes with that?

I think BC would be good to package with another player and send to Miami. Remember, Tuna liked him a LOT... Might get something decent out of it.

There is nothing wrong with having good depth. We have a good corps of LB's. Very soon our starting lineup at Linebacker could look like this...Demarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer on the Outside with Bradie James and Bobby Carpenter on the inside. That would be a very athletic, young and talented group. We need to keep who we have.

Regardless of ability, Carpenter plays a position where we already have starters under contract. Unless he could beat out Bradie James or Akin Ayodele, he is just a part of the depth at this position. Let's trade him to Miami for WR Ted Ginn. We need a speed receiver to replace Terry Glenn and that is what Ginn offers. When Ginn was drafted in Miami, it was a PR nightmare since they bypassed Brady Quinn. Let's give both Carpenter and Ginn a fresh start in a new city. Each was a first round draft pick, so the proposed trade should be comparable.

Spears hasn't distinguished himself much, but I don't think he's below average. Would like them to give Carpenter an extensive look.

Carpenter is a bust and should be on the first bus outta town.

Posted by dave @ 11:38 AM Thu, Feb 14, 2008

Miami has no receivers? Why in the world would they give him up? Don't get me wrong, I like him, but wasn't he a top 10 pick? And carpenter in the 20s? Makes no sense.

Bobby hasn't proven himself, nor has he proven he can't play. Romo was riding the bench for a few years before he got his start. Now, Romo wasn't a first round pick either. So groom Bobby, make sure he knows the details of the 3-4, and play him when he's ready.

Who do you play if James or Akin get hurt?

Posted by Bill in DC @ 11:51 AM Thu, Feb 14, 2008

Not sure Carpenter is 'physical' enough to play inside. Would be great if he could. We could play Burnett and Carpenter there.

I'd love for him to work out playing the outside. He looked so good against Seattle playing for Ellis that I really thought he was going to blossom. In that game against Minnesota he was atrocious, he looked like a cloud decended on him and sucked all knowledge of how to play LB out of his head.

I really hope he turns it around this coming preseason.

We need to get Spencer on the field more; I wish Ellis could move inside like the Giants do with Tuck on passing downs. Carpenter needs to put on 10 pounds so he could challenge Akin. Burnett is strictly an OLB.

Trade him to Miami for a number one pick. Parcells can be reunited with his buddies son.

Bobby Carpenter never should have been drafted by the Cowboys in the first place. I was floored when they took the 1st Round Special Teams Player.

I would trade Carpenter for a bag of shiny beads if I could get it. Thanks Bill!

The Derek Anderson to Miami rumor still has leg, huh? If I'm CLE I would consider trading Derek Anderson to Miami if I had Brady Quinn on the bench. The problem is, the Brownies have nothing to trade. Dallas has their #1 this year. Their first selection comes at #56 in the second round. Other than Anderson, they have nothing to offer. So how could Dallas get involved & benefit in this deal without ending up with the #1 overall pick that nobody seems to want this April? Miami does have 2 second round pics, (#32 & # 57).

If Cleveland could get the package right to snag the #1 overall for Anderson and picks, they would gladly trade it for our 2 late first rounders. I'm not saying use it to take McFadden or anybody else, but that pick has value to someone. We could turn it into several picks this year and next, right? Just an idea.

Bobby Carpenter shouldn't be traded if for nothing more than his contributions on special teams and depth purposes. Akin A.'s position should be up for grabs in training camp, so who knows what may happen maybe BC steps up. Marcus Spears is a whole different story because he's started for three seasons so we know what he has to offer. Jay Ratliff wasn't give a new contract to play NT. Ratliff's best position is DE and he should be put in Spears position next year to better our D-line, with Jason Hatcher as Rats backup. Spears should be the odd man out so a trade should be in the works possibly to Miami for a mid-round pick.
