Twentysomething RBs tend to be pretty good

Tim MacMahon   E-mail   News tips

As part of my never-ending quest to give Jerry good advice (like don't trade up for Darren McFadden), I did some research on running backs picked in the 20s. In other words, what caliber of back typically gets taken in the range of the Cowboys' two first-rounders?

The answer: pretty good ones. Follow the jump for proof.

Here are the backs taken in the twenties this decade:

Laurence Maroney, New England -- Rushed for 1,580 yards (4.4 per carry) and 12 TDs in two seasons. Rushed for 280 yards and three TDs in three playoff games this season.

DeAngelo Williams, Carolina -- Why does DeShaun Foster get more carries for the Panthers? Williams averaged 5.0 yards per carry (1.5 better than Foster) while rushing for 717 yards and four TDs this season.

Steven Jackson, Rams -- Has three consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons despite battling injuries for most of 2007. His 2,334 yards from scrimmage in 2006 rank among the best in NFL history.

Chris Perry, Bengals -- He's the exception on this list -- a guy who never made an impact in the NFL.

Willis McGahee, Bills/Ravens -- Has hit 1,000 yards in three of four pro seasons and came up 10 yards short in the other.

Larry Johnson, Chiefs -- Bit by injuries this season after racking up 3,539 rushing yards and 40 TDs in 2005 and '06.

Deuce McAllister, Saints -- He's a 1,000-yard back when healthy and was one of NFL's elite backs his first two seasons as starter.

Michael Bennett, Vikings/Chiefs/Bucs -- Back with blazing speed has been disappointment other than a 1,300-yard campaign in second pro season.

Run DMC is a great back but not really worth the price to move up. Opinions may vary on Marion the Barbarian but you can't argue the fact that the COWBOYS don't have to do any trading up! We do need a RB but not as bad as getting a starting CB in the draft.

Posted by Mark @ 5:22 PM Tue, Feb 05, 2008

Heard on Michael Irvin's show that Stephen Jones was working on Barbers contract to keep him...Sounds like your advice is getting through!

Posted by jean @ 5:49 PM Tue, Feb 05, 2008

cowboys are always better when the defense has to put 8 men in the box a la hill, dorsett, smith i don't think that's the case with the barbarian so mc faden should be on the table.

Keep a close eye on draft day -- I predict that McFadden will be dropping on draft day. If you look at each team's needs there aren't many who need a RB in the Top 10... plus don't discount the Reggie Bush syndrome.

Alot of teams will be thinking pretty hard about taking a RB that high when they have other glaring needs and a decent RB can be had later on.

We may end up with McFadden anyway if Jerry sees him falling. He could probably be had in the 7-10 range and I have a feeling that Jerry won't be able to help himself.

Going Back to 1998 these are the running backs taken in the top 10:
2007 Adrian Peterson #7
2006 Reggie Bush #2
2005 Ronnie Brown #2
Cedric Benson #4
Cadillac Williams #5
2001 LaAainian Tomlison #5
2000 Jamal Lewis #5
Thomas Jones #7
1999 Edgerrin James #4
1998 Curtis Ennis #5
Fred Taylor #9
Of that group there is one sure fore HOF member in LT. A few others with good careers and a few yet to be determined. You have to go back to the late 70's and early 80's before you see any consistency with high draft pick and great careers (Dorsett #2, Earl Campbell #1, Billy Sims #1 and Eric Dickerson #2 and BTW notice that all of these are either from or played in Texas). So it appears that drafting a RB high is at best a crap shoot and at worst a total waste. The mid to late 1st and then sprinkled throughout the middle rounds are all kinds of stars like Frank Gore, Marion Barber, Stephen Jackson, Clinton Portis and Brain Westbrook to name just a few. Unless the deal is of Herschel Walker proportions: DON'T DO IT!!!!

ocho cinco&T.O.

Posted by KY @ 6:16 PM Tue, Feb 05, 2008

Thank you Parcells...SJax coulda been here.

I agree with Chris Graham. Get Ocho Cinco in here to replace Glenn.

Db is the biggest need. Anyone wanna bet Jerry doesnt draft 1 ? Jerry will not draft a db till the 5th or 6th round becuase he is dumb enough to think the puke db's we have are good enough. We need a real rb one who can break away with speed. Barber is a slug. We also need a wr because again Jerry was dumb enough to think we could win with puke like Cayton. However go back in history and look at Jerry's drafting of wr's.

Posted by Mooreman @ 7:10 PM Tue, Feb 05, 2008

Why would JJ even consider spending a first round pick on a back-up RB. Enough of this nonsense, those picks have got to be spent on DB/WR
CAPTCHA BLOWS

Posted by catch22 @ 7:47 PM Tue, Feb 05, 2008

Blowsasgm,

Let me see if I follow your logic. You want to bet Jerry doesnt draft a Db but he will draft one in the 5th or 6th round ? Soooooo... Jerry wont draft a Db but he will draft a Db ? The only thing that blows is you , idiot

Posted by jtd86 @ 8:47 PM Tue, Feb 05, 2008

First, I'd rather have Williams or Fitzgerald than Ocho Cinco. They are both team players and he is not and all three will be costly. Secondly, the RB list above is not all that bad. Everything is a crap shoot. I think teams want very good and aren't expecting HOF! I am sure the WR's taken in the first round is not that good! With that, I don't want to give draft choices for McFadden. There are plenty of good RB's in this draft. With a 13-3 season and TO still playing well, I want to see Jerry go for it. How about this:
1. Franchise Adams. At his age, it may not go over too well and it is still a crap shoot as he may break down.
2. Get a free agent CB. Very expensive but he must go for it! Add another in the first round.
3. Get one of those WR. Williams or Fitzgerald. Could cost you a 1st round pick. Offer Arizona the second, they may be desperate to dump the salary. Again, very expensive.
4. Get Miami's second. Offer Spears, Carpenter and Ferguson. Costs us depth but will gain us a RB in the draft. Not seeing much of a drop off with others filling in. Not sure what it costs in salary cap.

If Jerry hits the whiskey bottle on draft day he might give up the whole draft for DMC. Like Ditka did years ago to get Ricky Williams.

Posted by Redskins_Rule @ 10:09 PM Tue, Feb 05, 2008

"if" Jerry hits the whiskey bottle?...look at some of those drafts that Jerry has led...he needs to look out though now...Botox + Dewar's neat could mean spontaneous combustion!!!...HA HA HA...Hail to the Redskins!!!...

Posted by Earl Price @ 10:20 PM Tue, Feb 05, 2008

Well if you talk to T-New before the probowl tell him to whisper good thing in Trufants ear about the cowboys and tell Jerry Jones to trade up with NE and give them Bobby Carpenter and out 2nd 1st rounder to draft Kenny Phillips (S) Miami

Had Dallas traded Barber, last year's #1 and this year's #1 for Adrian Peterson last year, considering the year Peterson had this past season, would you consider it a good or bad trade for Dallas?

The same logic applies with McFadden. If he puts up numbers next year like Peterson did this year, or even better numbers, two late #1's and Barber won't look like much to give up.

Posted by Michael in Chicago @ 7:59 AM Wed, Feb 06, 2008

RD 1 1st pick CB (even if you get a Free Agent pick up)

RD 1 2nd pick RB or WR (best player on the board)

RD 2 3rd pick WR OR RB (trade up to a top 10 pick in 2nd RD using carpenter and spears as bait)

Win the Super Bowl in 2009.

Posted by Chris Velie @ 8:04 AM Wed, Feb 06, 2008

AB, your willing to make that deal (assuming anyone takes it) on an "If"? What"If" the trade is made and RunDMC falls flat? The old saying "a bird in hand ...." applies. We know what we have with MB3 ad according to the above RBs are available lower in the draft so why take the gamble? My heart wants Run DMC bad but my brain says to slow down.

Posted by mike @ 8:16 AM Wed, Feb 06, 2008

AB: Wouldn't oy rather have Felix Jones, Leodis McElvin AND Marion Barber??? We need a 1st round talent at CB, and Barber is a GREAT back that just needs a little "lightning" next to him and our RB tandem will be as good as any besides the the two at Jax.

ps---please people STOP trying to trade our draft day failures (Spears, Carpenter etc...) so we can move and draft McFadden! It makes you people look foolish.

Posted by BlueZone @ 10:51 AM Wed, Feb 06, 2008

We desperately need to shore up the defensive secondary. Hopefully we don't pass up the chance to get CB Dominique Rogers-Cromartie like we did with his cousin.

All you draft MacFalldown people are retarded.

Posted by Jody @ 11:33 AM Wed, Feb 06, 2008

AB, Peterson was injured for part of the season, as he often was in college. Dmac is a bit of an upright runner ala Peterson, they tend not to last. I say get a FA corner, draft one high enough to have genuine talent, draft a complimentary back to MB, but do not sell the farm for one player. Also, no one is going to make a blockbuster trade involving Carpenter and Spears and Pacman will not be a Cowboy.

Posted by r-dubya @ 1:21 PM Wed, Feb 06, 2008

I'll take Felix Jones or Rashard Mendenhall and Ledois McKelvin or Dominique Rodger-Cromartie in the first over Run DMC. We're more than a RB away from returning to Super Bowl form.

I'd like to see us pick up UH's Donnie Avery in the 2nd round. Dude's a beast.

Posted by Butthead @ 1:23 PM Wed, Feb 06, 2008

I hate it when people say we could have had Steven Jackson instead of Mpears and Julius. The year we traded that pick to the bills and got Julius in the 2nd round, we weren't even going to draft Jackson anyway. The cowboys had Kevin Jones pegged as the draft's top back.

Posted by AB @ 5:02 PM Wed, Feb 06, 2008

Chris, Mike, & Jody, of course making that trade would be a gamble. But who remembers what players/picks turned out to be in the Dorsett trade? Or the Colts trade of Elway to Denver? No one without looking it up, because they didn't turn out to be much.

And look at JJ's draft history with a Top-5 pick (Aikman, Maryland, Newman) vs. his lack of success with picks in the 20's (Robert Jones, Carver, LaFluer, Ekuban, Spears). I just don't trust JJ with those picks in the 20's.

Dickerson & Eddie George were also upright runners, and given MB3's style of running, he also can get hurt easily. And this is thing I don't get: If MB3 is as great as everyone makes him out to be, why did Parcells & Phillips combined only start him ONE game over Julius Jones? The Cowboys need more team speed, and everytime McFadden touches the ball he can score from anywhere on the field. MB3 can't.

Posted by chris @ 5:56 PM Wed, Feb 06, 2008

AB, you are a moron. Jimmy johnson drafted Aikman and Maryland and parcells drafted newman. Jerry has drafted one good value player in his entire life(Larry Allen) He is incompetent and will destroy the cowboys.
