Wade's seat not that hot?

1:48 PM Tue, Feb 12, 2008 |
Albert Breer   E-mail   News tips

ESPN.com's Mike Sando has an interesting breakdown of the state of coaching in the NFL. And apparently, he hasn't been listening to all of you.

Category 1 in Sando's piece in "On the hot seat." Leading the way there is Cincinnati's Marvin Lewis, who Sando says is one of just two coaches since 1996 to be given a sixth year on the job without winning playoff game. Two other coaches are in this at-risk group: San Francisco's Mike Nolan and Carolina's John Fox.

Noticeably missing was your own Wade Phillips, who did make the "Second chances pay off" group, though this technically is his third chance. The others in that group, all of whom were fired from previous head coaching jobs: Mike Shanahan, Bill Belichick, Tony Dungy, Tom Coughlin, Dick Jauron and Norv Turner. There are four Super Bowl champions in that group, for the record.

It's Not, the it Damn Sure Should Be!!!!

I am so angry. Brian Stewart and Wade Phillips, who have not been out of the first round of the playoffs in the past two years if ever, have found someway to prevent the hiring of a Defensive Coordinator who has not only been out of the firt round, but taken his team at least to the Championship Game of his perspective conference coaching a 3-4 and a 4-3 in Dom Capers.

Brian Stewart Let me say something similar to you as you said to Dom Capers, "I am uncomfortable with you on staff and being the Defensive Coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys"! Where were the adjustmens ALL-YEAR-LONG. Roy Williams out of place Gets Torched (No Adjustment), Nate Jones out of place Gets Torched (No Adjustment), Opposing Teams continue to pick up our Weak Blitz Schemes (No Adjustment), the team that you and Wade Phillips left the Chargers did something that you and Wade could not do while you were in San Diego and this "GET OUT OF THE FIRST ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS". A new defensive coordinator faired better with your old defense than you did.

NYG Defensive Coordinator in his first season gets his defense well enough to get to the Super Bowl and WIN IT!

San Diego Defensive Coordinator gets his team to the AFC Championship Game!

We couldn't even get out the First Round, with a Bye and Home Field Advantage!

Jerry, you have to do something? Why should Cowboy Nation have to suffer through More of the same Next Year on the Defensive side of the ball.

WE DESERVE BETTER Than Brian Stewart and Wade Phillips Defensive Coaching!!!

Why is Wade Phillips Here?

1.Is it because he was the best coach available. No?

2.Is it because he is the coach that could have put the cowboys over the "TOP"? No!

3.I got it he is the master of the Draft, like Jimmy Johnson? No!

4.Is he a master talent evaluator? No!

It is because Jerry Jones, allowed Bill "Freak in" Parcells to converted our successful 4-3 (The defense we won 3 Super Bowls with) over to a Gimmick 3-4 Defense. We get bounced out of the first round 2 years straight with this 3-4 defense, and the GIANTS win the Super Bowl with the 4-3 that we have abandoned. This defense is suppose to stop the run, however, we give up big runs quite a bit. Jerry Help!

I feel like I am in BAZARRO WORLD!

madass,

You seem to place ALL the blame at the feet of Wade and Stewart. Doncha think maybe, just maybe some of the blame can be sent the players way? I think you give far more importance to scheme and adjustments than is merited. As if changing where a player lines up (say press vs off coverage) really makes a difference if the player can't play. Making reeves play press instead of off would just get him beat faster. The Giants didn't make that many adjustments when playing Dallas, they just made plays in the second half that they weren't making in the first.

There is no scheme, no 'adjustment' that will miraculously make Reeves, Jones, Williams, Ayodele, James better players. They have to make the plays. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure that the Wade 3-4 does not call for the inside LBs to get engulfed and buried on inside running plays. Just a suspicion mind, not a fact. I'm also pretty sure that the scheme doesn't call for the CB to get beat like a red headed step child or for the safety to take ridiculously bad angles as ours are wont to do.

I think Dallas' D is better than you think. Add a good third CB and I think it is a different story.

I have a question for all of you so-called fans who come on this blog and act like you can fix all that ails the 'Boys or know more than Jerry. Why are you here on the blog instead of working out at the Ranch prparing for Free Agency and the Draft? Wait that's right you only play someone who knows anything about the world of professional football on th internet, my bad....

ROFl,

It is easy for Jimmy Johnson to appear to be a 'master of the draft' after Jerry got him 4 extra #1s, 3 extra #2s, 3 extra #3s in a 3 year period.

If Johnson was such a 'master' why on earth did he draft Steve Walsh with a #1 in the 89 Supplemental draft (costing Dallas the #1 overall pick in the 1990 draft), why did he take Russell Maryland with the #1 pick in the 91 draft (a good D Tackle to be sure, but you don't draft just a 'good' D tackle with the #1 overall, do you?), why did he draft Alexander Wright #2, Kelvin Pritchett #1, etc? Household names certainly.

Jimmy Johnson's draft mastery is overrated

Bill,

The Giants, played with the majority of their defensive backfield hurt or injured. The way their defensive coordinator stated that he worked around it was by changing his scheme to fit the talent he had on the field and Blitzing more.

San Diego's defensive coordinator said something very similar.

Bill, I don't know how long you have been a Cowboys Fan, But I remember in the 90's we one 3 Super Bowls with 3 different sets of LB, 2 differnt sets of S's, a 12th CB Bumb in Larry Brown, mind you 2 super Bowls were before Deion Sanders, and guess what, we also had 3 different Def Cor. that all played the same scheme, and your trying to Tell me I pay to much attention to scheme. Bill are for real?

I can tell you have never played football before or are you just a couch potato with one basic, and I mean basic statement. We need a CB. LOL....

If players are not in the right position, you put them in the right positon to make plays. The majority of the players that you have described were all 4-3 players. You scheme to fit your players for success.

For all of you who think Wade should be fired, take a good look around the NFL. Teams that are successful year in and year out have stability at the head coaching position. Teams that don't have consistent success are the ones replacing their head coaches every year or two or three. Your kind of thinking would have had Tom Landry fired after a few years with the expansion Cowboys in the early 60s and then we would have never had that great 20 year run of winning seasons, playoffs, and Super Bowls. Wade's been here one year and to fire him now will just introduce more turmoil into the team. Yes, the playoff loss in the first game sucked but 13-3 is nothing to dismiss so easily either. Let's see what happens in the next couple of years.

"...a 12th CB Bumb in Larry Brown..."

do you mean bum?...and what about 12th?...do you mean 12th round draft choice?...If my memory serves correctly Brown was hardly a bum...in fact he was the only CB that was in the same zip code as the WRs in the Cow-pies playoff loss to Detroit in '91...and BTW...the guy was lost in college...came out of LA's inner city...but he had blue chip college pedigree/just not the immediate grades...learn your HX before you post...and Jimmy knew where to find guys like that in the draft and knew their appropriate draft value...he probably recruited him while he was at UM...geesh...HA HA HA©...Hail to the Redskins©!!!...

Madass,

When we won those SBs in the 90's it wasn't our defense that did it, it was our offense.

Dallas defense was not SB worthy in the early 90's until we added a player, Charles Haley, not when we 'schemed' to take advantage of the players talent. It didn't hurt when we drafted CB Kevin Smith in the 1st round either (although we won the 93 SB when he was on IR at the end of the first game).

Same for the offense. When Jimmy Johnson was interviewed and asked about his great play calling and scheming on offense, his response was, "What plays? When I didn't know what to do I said, Give the ball to Emmitt."

I have played football and I can tell you it has more to do with players than schemes. I don't care what scheme you use, if the player can't play, putting him 'in position' to make the play won't help you. There's a reason we played our corners off - it's because they can't play press so no 'scheme' is going to help. The Giants defense was applying tremendous pressure via pass rush early in the season and late in the season, regardless of the 'scheme'. In fact, they were getting their pressure with their front 4, not via blitzing. The change was the maturation of the Giants secondary (they used a #1 on a CB btw).

Yeah, we need a CB. Reeves and Jones are NOT good or even average CBs. they're 7th round draft picks that Dallas is trying to make play like first day picks. It doesn't work. The Giants young CBs are first day picks, not 7th round afterthoughts. Dallas gambled they could get away with it, they lost. It was sickening to watch receivers get free 2 secs into a play, no pass rush on earth is going to get there in 2-3 secs consistently. Newman was gimped the entire season and they were covering his inability to move in certain directions via scheme. Henry was hurt and they had to adjust the scheme for him. It's why we played them off so much, they couldn't press. to be successful a team needs 3 good CBs, not 2 good but gimped and 2 toast candidates.

A side point is the 3-4 that Phillips likes was not the 3-4 that was played this past season. In SD his 3-4 CBs played press and man cover. In Dallas they adjusted the scheme because the CBs could NOT PLAY PRESS and could not play man, they played a ton of zone. If Dallas can get another good cover CB and Newman/Henry are healthy my guess is you'll see a lot more cover/press type coverages to take away the quick outs and underneath stuff teams killed us with this year. If they can cover for 3-4 secs the pass rush will be able to REALLY pressure the QB.

The idea that you can take any old players off the street and apply some magical 'scheme' and they'll be able to play championship defense is a dream.

mad,

one more thing, oh Oracle of schemes. The CB and Safety positions are not played a whole lot differently in a 4-3 vs a 3-4. I suppose you know that though. The position that has the most different in a 4-3 v 3-4 is linebacker. Close second is DE. Nose can play a one or a two gap, just like they do in a 3-4 as a tackle.

Ya, I played football as a linebacker, but I like Lacrosse much more. I played Div I Lacrosse and was good, I was a so-so football player.

What do you mean, "not listing to US?!?" You guys in the media are the ones that have championed the theory that Wade is just keeping the seat warm, and he's out if he doesn't win it all next season.
